I was just reminded that when on shift you're required to wear proper footwear... so make sure you take some old sneakers to wear. no crocs, flip flops, etc.

I would add a pair of sturdy leather work gloves to this. They don't mention it anywhere, but there's a decent chance that you'll be doing something like moving rocks or shoveling mulch for 10hrs a day and that kind of working will undoubtedly take it's toll on your hands. I'm planning on bringing work gloves, closed shoes, a C-wrench, and a Leatherman with me to incorporate into my day-pack while serving my volunteer hours. If youcan't fix it with a Leatherman and workgloves, it can't be fixed
that's for pre-fest/midfesters maybe... not tollbooth I just forgot sneakers were essentially a requirement. If you come to shift in wrong shoes, they'll send you away supposedly...

I just keep thinking of things (since I think about Bonnaroo almost 24/7)...
So I'm during fest - what are the chances of getting shifts on Wednesday? I mean, I have to check in on Tuesday, so are there during fest shifts on Wednesday, or will I just be chilling/exploring all day Wednesday? Obviously, I'd love to get one or two shifts out of the way Wednesday - are there certain areas that would increase the odds of that?
Sorry if y'all don't know this kind of stuff, but I figure it can't hurt to ask! Thanks!

My first year to 'Roo was my first year volunteering and I was duringfest. I was lucky enough to be scheduled one solid 12hr shift right off the bat-0- it was an excruciating overnight shift, manning Pod 1 out by the volunteer campsite. It was funny because all of these people would come up and ask me thing but I never had any idea what to tell them! It was great though because I only ended up working on short shift during the actual festival and I was pretty much free for everything I wanted to see.
I can't think of any great way to ensure that you'll have that kind of luck-- so much of WET's operation seems kind of thrown together that it's very difficult to try and affect changes or courses of action in any particular direction. I think that the lion's share of schedule selection is really luck of the draw. There does exist a distinct chance that you'll be scheduled in a way that accomidates maximum during-fest freedom, but for what it's worth, I was completely alone manning Pod 1 for many hours back in '10, and I'm not sure how many other WET'ers were working elsewhere on other things =/
What might a typical pre fester need a c wrench or a leatherman for?
Last year there were requests for volunteers with carpentry experience. I didn't raise my hand because my carpentry experience is rather limited. I did, however, find my way onto the crew that designed all of the festival's decor lighting. I work at a music venue as my day-job and freelance as a lighting technician for high-end private events (last Sunday I worked a wedding that was attended by Tom Brokaw, among others). I doubt that most prefesters would have much use in bringing a C Wrench and a Leatherman, but with my skill set, those tools are imperative. I've already contacted the lighting crew I worked with last year and I'm expecting to be with them again this year, so I'll be bringing the trade tools.
For the record, I've not suggested that all prefesters bring a C Wrench and a Leatherman for use in their WET shifts, but I would certainly advise all volunteers to bring work gloves. Generally speaking, I would typically advise all Bonnaroo goers to bring a Leatherman, but that may just be because I'm a Leatherman junkie and I always have it with me =)
Got another WET email today. Talks about orientations on Tues night, footwear, no re-entry, shift swaps allowed Wed morning 10-11am, etc.
SO close!!! ahhh!
Sounds like we may be camped over by VIP this year!
"you will find the volunteer campground has moved way closer to the action in Centeroo and the stage areas"
and then later: "If I am working post festival -- I understand that I will need to move my campsite to the designated WET camping area in the Back 60 next to outside of WET HQ (VIP), if I am not already camped in that area, before I report to my shift"

That'd be sweet!
Hmm...didn't even see that when I skimmed that email earlier. It also says showers will be available in POD 1, which I believe was in BFE last year - not sure if the PODS have changed or what's going on with that. Does anyone know when this year's map should drop?
Showers in POD 1 shouldnt be different from last year, I think. I just know tollboothers ended up getting paper vouchers to use at other PODs (POD 6, mainly) since going to POD 1 is unrealistic.
I wonder how close they're gonna make it. Kinda wish they'd make our camp closer to Centeroo too but i guess west tollbooths are used the most so they want volunteers close to it. It's nice to at least see Centeroo from camp and watch the ferris wheel get built and fields get full of people and whatnot.

I was just thinking that since it sounds like we may be close to POD 2 or 3, they wouldn't make us hike to POD 1 for the free showers?
I guess I was wondering if POD 1 this year could be in a different location than last year - not sure if they ever switch the numbering system up!
I doubt numbering will be much different. I know based on last year's experience that I was in tollbooth camping next to the west tollbooths in the upper left corner of the map...other volunteers were somewhere out near pod 1 in "BFE" in the lower right area... and that tollboothers eventually got paper shower tickets, 1 for each shift, to use...and the closest POD to us was POD 6. I used 1 of mine before I leave on Monday at POD 7. A ton more showers there and by the time I was ready to leave I think POD 6 showers had closed and they told us to go to POD 7, so we drove to it, parked next to it, took showers before heading home, and felt great.

So how far of a walk is it from where volunteer camping is to the entrance? This is my first time going, I have no concept of how far away anything is. Though I have been doing some running the last few weeks to try to prep myself
I don't see it =(. Where on the old map is this volunteer camping?
Did you update the app in the iTunes store? It's down by all the James Bond camps (96-102).
I have an Android-- but luckily Ellie posted a collaged series of screenshots on her Facebook and it looks like the volunteer campground is in EXACTLY the same spot as last year! No worries here though, I rather liked that area
yeah, that's a hike to centeroo...i was in camp m last year and dreaded the walk every morning...even with the cut-thru path opened, it's still at least a 30 min walk...you can't cut through VIP either, you must walk around it to get to the arch...cheers!
Yep, which is why I like tollbooth camp better. Less risk of ticks, can see the farm change more, closer to Ferris wheel entrance which I feel is better, and I always know that entrance is open vs the path near what stage.
