I heard Kanye broke Phil's hip on stage, thus forcing him to end his set early.
It's true. Phil was knocked down by a gust from Kanye's helicopter, which had just arrived from a party in Atlanta that ended 2 hours after his set was supposed to begin.
Get off of your high horse. Never said anything about hate, just said don't think they care about Bonnaroo. For a lot of these bands, it's just another festival to play. Regarding San Francisco, I don't know Phil Lesh's thought process, but I imagine the average human being would prefer to play a large fest that just got started in their hometown over some festival they've already played in the middle of a field in Anytown, USA. These guys have been touring non-stop for over what, 50 years? It's just another festival now.
And commercialism at Bonnaroo, it's all over the place with the sponsorships. I'm sure it got started when 100,000 Dead fans crashed the gate.
All festivals have commercialism, you wouldnt be able to through a festival without commercialism. Ticket sales alone do not provide enough revenue to cover the expenses of a festival and definitely not enough to make a profit and yes, the promoters do this to make money. It's not a charity. Bonnaroo may have more commercialism than a 30k person festival but that is because it is 3x bigger so it has 3x more commercialism. I have some family friends who throw a 3k person, 2 day festival in Southern Missouri and they too have a lot of sponsors. Even with the sponsors and "commercialism", they often just break even or lose a few hundred dollars.
Nowadays, yes, with the huge amount of different festivals run in different seasons. However, in 2002, there was Coachella, Lolla, and HORDE (though defunct at time), along with Phish festivals til they broke up. Bonnaroo changed that in 2002, and commercialism was very little in the early years of Bonnaroo.
Edit: Bonnaroo changed the American festival landscape, therefore, creating more nationally known festivals along with the Internet (due to ease of information).

To "furthur" dispel this ridiculous rumor, didn't we get some intel from insider that Furthur was pretty far in discussions to play in 2011, but that it ultimately fell through?
Phil must have forgotten he was mad at Manchester until he was about to sign the contract.

I was at the infamous LN Phil show on the Which stage and saw someone throw a shoe at Phil and his glow bass and scream, "Get off the stage, old timer. We want Kanye." That's what happened. And by the way, the shoe was a crusty Sanuk. I hope that finally clears all this stuff up once and for all. ... Bonnaroo just doesn't care about the "jam" anymore.
That being said it is pretty glaring that we are five years without a member back at this point.
Except Bruce Hornsby and Warren Haynes (to an extent). The concept that Phil and The Dead have a grudge against Bonnaroo is a tired discussion that never had any actual source, and was disproven when Furthur played Outside Lands. Yes, The Dead are from San Francisco, but the alleged grudge should be against the entity that violently yanked him off the stage, breaking his hip in the process (this is how rumors start).
Bruce is hardly a member of the Grateful dead because he played keys on one tour, and Warren guested with The Dead one year but that is also strecthing a point. Like I said Phil was irritated with Kanye here is a streaming link check out track 17 before the donor rap.
I mean, it's a little strange to me that I have to prove that a dude who claimed his wife was his sister is nuts, but here are a few more things:
Jack launched an angry rant halfway through the set, apparently annoyed by the laidback reaction from the crowd. "F*** you, you hip motherf******! Why don't you rock the f*** out?” he yelled. “Maybe I should go grab those free drinks and shove them down your throats, you hip motherf******!"
The White Stripes guitarist also halted the performance midway through to insist an audience member be ejected because he was taking photos of the band, according to a report in the New York Daily News.
After appearing for his pretrial hearing Tuesday, White Stripes frontman Jack White pleaded guilty to assaulting Von Bondies frontman Jason Stollsteimer on December 13 at a Detroit rock club.

Bonnaroo had 47 acts in 2002 and 4 music stage and a cinema tent. Not to mention all the amenities they have now and didnt then. The attendance has only grown about 10k people since then so how do you think Roo has managed to grow the festival by numerous stages even though most are smaller along with tripling the amount of acts and adding far more expensive ones at that? Do you think ticket prices paid for that? On top of that, Bonnaroo was a new festival in 2002. A lot of companies arent going to through a lot of money into sponsoring an event that is just up and running, especially when a lot of festivals fail. As it has grown, more companies are willing to invest money into the festival and the commercialism grows from there. The commercialism is a good thing, it allows them to book acts like Paul McCartney and Radiohead. It allows them to add water stations and other amenities that you wouldnt get to use otherwise.
Turtles are, actually quite sexy, if you think about it. I’m getting an erection just thinking about turtles. No, not a stripper named turtles, that’s not funny. Actual turtles.

If you listen to the archive.org stream of the show Phil was at least irritated, he did not say anything about never coming back. That being said it is pretty glaring that we are five years without a member back at this point.
This is great. So do you actually believe Phil refuses to play Bonnaroo because of Kanye, or are you just trying to stoke outrage but retain deniability for when Phil/Bob finally do play again?

Just making a point, you need to take a chill pill dude. The facts are that Phil was pissed about the situation, and no member of the dead has played Bonnaroo since, when every year before there had been at least one member on the lineup. I don't know if it is cause and effect or not, but there certainly is proof Phil was pissed, you can listen to it on the stream.

So you're saying it's more likely than not that the "Curse of Lesh is real?" I'm not upset, I'd just like to know your opinion for the record.
Basically, people want them to add the Coachella lineup.
You do realize that saying Coachella 2013 > Bonnaroo 2013 as many times as you can will not make it come true and that every time you say it makes it seem a little more like you don't believe it yourself?

He is a weird dude, I have met him by myself a few times and he was always nice. If he gets in a crowd of people he just gets odd. Roofan asked if he could shake his hand once when we are were crowded in waiting for a show to start. He just looked at him and left immediately.

I have spent years denying it, but every year they are not there again I believe a little more. Also I did not actually listen to the stream until last year. I really have no idea at this point, I would love to see them back in some form though.

Whoever said Dawes, they are touring with Dylan in the spring. Whether they will accompany him on the rest of his tour, which has not yet been announced, remains to be seen.

If you believe it could be true, then what is your answer to Furthur playing Outside Lands? The San Francisco aspect does not cut it for me. If the grudge is against Bonnaroo, then the grudge is against the promoters. I know San Francisco is a magical city, but the grudge against the promoters would still exist there, too.

All of that does make him seem overly protective of his image and that he probably needs a chill pill or two but his level of jackassery does not seem to rival Kayne.

Well, that article doesn't say it was forbidden, but even if it was, you can't simply point the person out to security and have them make him/her stop? You have to stop an entire show to single him/her out and have them removed?
Yeah, that's not an egotistical thing to do at all.
Point being - he's just as much of a loony tune as Kanye, people give him more leeway because he's soft-spoken and isn't in tabloids all the time.
As if taking photos is the worst of the "forbidden" things people do at concerts.
I can understand an artist being upset when fans are close to the stage and using really bright flashes. That's pretty blinding. The professionals are told, "No flash photography."
