First time poster, long time reader. Went to all Roos 02-06, but this is my first year back since then and first year in VIP.
This board is a wealth of knowledge.
Where is the Thurs pre party? This may sound a little picky, but is it worth going to? What kind of food/drinks do they serve? Anyone have any pics of previous trips?
The party is held at a private stage they set up in VIP right by the main VIP tent. It does not have a huge capacity, but the band does a full 2 hour set typically. The crowd is rarely that big or pressed since it is typically around sundown, and the later Thurs Bands have started. Last year, it was Dumpstafunk and was awesome. I was able to walk right up and be on the "rail". Those guys were really interactive too. Typically, it will be an under card band playing Friday or Saturday.
Food is served ahead of time. More like a higher end cafeteria food. It is decent, if a bit heavy. All you can drink beer. In my opinion, it is worth it to go for the food. It is usually a chicken, a pasta, a potato, a salad, and a vegetable. If the band is appealing to you, it is worth going to the show. However, if you have a conflict (Alabama Shakes conflicted last year I think) don't miss someone you want to see.
I grabbed at least 15 beers in 2011, starting around 6PM. Tho it could have been open earlier. Prettttttttttttttty sure they had some kind of Magic Hat.
BUT I do remember that sometime around... maybe 11 or so, maybe after midnight, I went back to the free beer bar and was informed it was no longer free. So there's definitely a cutoff.
Free beer is great and all, but I'm not gonna be too upset skipping it. It's all gonna depend on the band that's playing and who it's conflicting with. Judging by the way Thursday is shaping up, 6pm may be too stacked as it is.
Quacker and I were also there with several others and Viking last year. Ate, drank, and boogied til it was time for Alabama shakes. I 'might' have some pictures that are appropriate for sharing. But then again we had wayyy much fun, may not find any appropriate. : )

They've had great bands in my experience and they seem to have kept a New Orleans Jass/Funk kind of feel the last few years. Some recent highlights are Janelle Monae, The New Orleans All Stars, Big Sam and the Funky Nation and the previously mentioned Dumstaphunk. Combine that with free beer and there has to be something pretty solid to pull me away. I've left early to see a few bands in recent years. I left early to see Band of Skulls and therefore saw almost none of NOAS but last year I left for Shakes and ended up coming back because it was such a cluster. Alt-J or the Death Grips could steal me away this year depending on who they slip in. I'm betting on The Preservation Hall.
Get your $'s worth!! A big pleasant surprise for us, keeping in mind we are not 'on the rail' folks, was the VIP viewing to the right of the which stage. (But they have a rail for VIP there as well.) Lots of grass and never crowded. Loved that!! Thought it was only metal bleachers in the blazing sun. LOVED this area, especially with the VIP lounge and portos right behind it.
Wife and I went VIP in 2009. I figured I'd try to make my money back on free beer night, oops. I drank so much I was up at 1:00 am talking to all our neighbor. Not usually a big deal unless you're buck naked. Suffice to say my face was red all weekend and not from sunburn.
If I'm not mistaken, they usually start serving food and beer around 5-6. Dumpstaphunk played last year, and I think they came on somewhere in the vicinity of 8-9. I know we left around 9:45 to go see Phantogram, and Phantogram came on at 10:15.

Time for beer + Alt J.. CHECK
Good info.
Agreed!! Looks like Thursday is going to have a pretty good line up! Free beer!!! Yay!
Things are very well organized there in VIP. I have had a chance to eat dinner and have 4-5 beers each year during the pre-party without missing out on any of the Thursday bands I have wanted to see.
There were at least 4 different beers available at the party too which was nice
A commenter on FB said something about no free food or beer this year...and then I went to the Roo website and saw this:
VIP tickets don’t include any meals, but there is an optional food/meal program from Tom Cats Catering, which can be purchased along with your tickets.

Does that mean no party this year??
I don't know what they're offering in toto, but where it lists what the VIP package includes on the website it still says this:
OH good! I went to the VIP camping page and it didn't mention it and when it said NO meals instead of 1 meal at the party, I wondered. Not that it's a make or break, but it's a good time!
Haha, we wish. Last year, Dumpstafunk was great, but it is almost always some folksy / Americana group like Mumford or someone.
It seems to me that it's usually someone funky with a New Orleans connection. The last couple of years there's been a Neville included. I also remember Rebirth Brass Band and Henry Butler. There was also a Duo show years ago (2005?) that I missed (I arrived too late).
