So, I spoke with the DTI folks- it's a no go for the group rate. They want to make all the money they can, so no discounts. Ha ha. I tried.
But, once everyone has booked (which she said they are half full currently), I can call them back with a list of names who already have reservations, and they will do their best to put those who want to be close, together.
In other words, if you want to be in the Inforoo Party Block, just add that to your description. Does that work LD?
How much will the hotel rooms cost where you guys are booked?
Depending on when you booked, the rate fluctuated Between $90- $120 a night, but that is where you want to be. It's not a bad price, if you split a room up. Obviously, the hotel will kick up rates with demand, so book a room now.

FYI, if anyone even thinks they might want to go next year, book super early. My total estimated stay without tax for 4 nights is $308.
I booked in February and that was about my total...but they "corrected" it. So be prepared for that surprise, it may happen. A lot of us had our rates "corrected" last year, too.
I think once he realized the demand for the weekend/event he realized he could increase the rate. They gave everyone the option to accept or kick rocks. We all chose to accept.
They probably have it sorted out better this year, as the Fri/Sat rates are already higher.

I am about 75% sure I'm going with my girlfriend, and possibly some of our friends. If I DO go I want to keep it cheap as possible. I see DTI is up to $155 a night, and there's still places for $90. I actually might even do camping or a cabin- it looks like it's only a 15 min drive. Does it make sense to do this?
If I end up going I definitely would love to meet all your lovely faces

Any of the places that are cheaper than DTI would require a drive, just FYI. Downtown Inn is the cheapest place within walking distance, which can be pretty clutch.
I'm thinking about this, but only if there's free beer/drinks in the VIP lounge. If there is, that will probably cover the extra money over the course of the weekend...if not, I don't think I can justify skipping the line for the 1 or 2 shows I'll want to see that will be at capacity.
Anyone know for sure if they've offered free drinks in the VIP lounge in the past? Doesn't say anything about it on the list of VIP perks.

I wouldn't call it a nightmare, but definitely an annoyance. There is a parking deck tucked in a few blocks northwest of the main venue, but it sometimes gets full. I can't remember, but I wanna say it's like $12 for the whole day? Like I said though, sometimes it gets full, especially on weekends.
If I go GA, will there be a chance of missing the NMH night?
Definitely a chance, yes. If you go GA I would get there early (at least for the band before them, if not two bands before them if you're really freaking out about it).

They did last year, at the main venue in the lounge. Beer and moonshine mixed drinks. I don't know if it was specifically spelled out last year either...Anyone remember?
Are there some shows that you can't see because of capacity? Like where you got there late and couldn't get in?
Absolutely.
Missed Fout Tet because the venue was already full and there was a line around the block.
This is why I'm strongly considering VIP, just to avoid the capacity/line hassles. It does kind of suck when you're the only one in your group, though. Feels a bit weenieish to be like "Peace out guys, I'm goin in!" But I think I just may do it anyway... The payment plan makes it very tempting.
Im actually debating the VIP payment plan..it doesnt say anything about free drinks though (not that its a dealbreaker for me) - Exclusive entrance to U.S. Cellular Center
- Exclusive viewing areas in ExploreAsheville.com Arena and Thomas Wolfe Auditorium
Let me ask you this, if I drive, what is the parking situation like? How much does it cost and is it a nightmare?
Couldn't you leave it parked on a decent, residential side-street for the weekend and just walk around?
You could park on Montford and walk into downtown. I've done that before for other events and no one seems to bother me. I imagine most people wouldn't know that and will try to park downtown. If you park downtown I would personally go to the parking garage near the orange peel and park on the roof. It's $5 for all day parking on Fridays/weekends.
