yea Chevy stage was a flat out mess i gave up on Bastille after 3 songs due to bad sound, way to packed in the back, and they just didnt sound good. Ventured back over for Portugal and same result even on the ocean side this time and gave up and hit the beach for a little. beetroots were insane that was fun but i kicked out like 20-30 min early to get a great spot for fitz who has topped all 3 of their sets ive seen this year
I was so pissed off at the sound on the Chevy Stage during QOTSA that I never went back to that stage for the rest of the weekend. Weren't there relay towers behind the soundboard in previous years? or did they downgrade the sound system there? Whatever it was, Hangout fucking blew it on that stage.
Where were you for that show? I was about 20 rows back and it sounded fucking awesome! That stage in particular had shitty sound unless you were in the front 100 yards of the stage. I lost my mind during QotSA!! Weird fucking night overall.

Saw some fantastic sets this year! This was my first year back since 2011 and was pleasantly surprised with how everything flowed minus leaving the headliners.
P.S.
Somewhere, someone is watching a video of me pissing. Big brother is everywhere!!!

Ugh, sounds like the pre-2013 Chevy stage sound was back!
The sound during Primus at Hangout 2012 (I think it was 2012) on the Chevy stage made me angrier than anything at a festival ever has. So quiet, it sounded like someone was playing Primus from their car across a Walmart parking lot.
I feel like it was better in 2013, still not great but better. How could they backslide and fuck that up again?
And the main beach stage always sounds so awesome. I don't understand how these music festivals can completely ruin a stage just by not giving the sound enough juice.
The answer is simple: moar speakers and moar amplification.

I was on the beach side about 50 ft behind the soundboard. I got there late because of Gary Clark Jr. Tried to get close from the left side by VIP and it was a complete clusterfuck of people (most of whom weren't even watching the show but talking/cheesedicking), so we got out and went to the right side of soundboard. The wind was kicking hard and that made the sound even worse because we could hear it fine for a few seconds, then we wouldn't be able to hear it worth a fuck for the next 15 seconds. I had some friends that were close and they said it sounded find there, but that is a major stage and if the sound is that shitty just past the soundboard then that is inexcusable. I warned some friends that went to Jack Johnson to get there at least 30 minutes early, they did but still couldn't get close enough to hear him.

Yeah, main stages shouldn't have volume problems at all. Everyone I talked to said the sound at JJ was absolutely terrible. Glad I didn't waste my time and went to Andrew W.K with the other 49 people.
I got close for Modest Mouse. That set was perfect. My other favs of the weekend, besides Outkast, were St. Paul & Broken Bones, Reignwolf, Diarrhea Planet, Black Lips, Andrew W.K., Classix, and Wolfmother.
Had a great time raging my condo for 5 days. Figured I'd be able to score a wristband outside the fest but I was totally wrong on that assumption. If I had been willing to post up for hours I prob could have scored one cheap, especially on Saturday, but I was hungover and inpatient.
I got a wristband at noon on Sunday so I saw everything I wanted that day. Borrowed wristbands the rest of the weekend so I only saw limited amounts of acts. Luckily I could hear everything on the main stage from my condo 100%, so I chilled out there for a lot of sets. Pretty butthurt about missing Diarrhea Planet. I had a wristband I coulda borrowed too, but I was pretty out of it and didn't want to be in the sun at the time. Fail. Sometimes when you're a hetti dude you gamble on scoring tickets outside. This is the second time I got shut out ever out of almost 500 shows since 2009, so that's not bad. Being able to hear shit from my balcony with all the alcohol I can drink made it not that big of a deal.
Best sets I saw/heard: 1. Outkast 2. Modest Mouse 3. Queens of the Stone Age 4. Wolfmother 5. Gary Clark Jr. 6. Balkan Beat Box 7. Iron & Wine 8. Space Face 9. St. Paul & the Broken Bones 10. Reignwolf

You could say cheesedick'd, but you'd be cheesedicking yourself, because my balcony was literally an unimpeded view of the festival from behind the mainstage, so I was hearing shows on that stage way better than if you were in the back of the crowd.
I went hard for 5 days with close friends, and I've been to every Hangout, so I'm content with my experience.
Also, nice Groundhog Day avatar pic, I f'n hate that guy.
Had an awesome time! I agree with the Chevy Stage sucking. My wife wanted to see Ingrid Michealson so we went and could not hear a fn thing, sucked, I never went back to the Chevy stage except for The blackberry Smoke show where I knew I could get up front. We had 3 couples and 2 of them one Super Vip passes for the day, not me though As always some great surprises in the bands RDGLDGRN - were great, so much fun hope you didn't miss that one Amos Lee- Totally surprised at how much I liked that set Diarhea Planet- brought the fun and the energy loved it Conor Oberst w/Dawes was a great show Caked Up - was a fun Sunday eye opener The Avetts - My favorite show of the weekend Gary Clark Jr - totally brought it Reignwolf - burnt the stage down whew!!! I saw none of the headliners, just not my thing to see bands playing in front of 35,000 people, but I understand those that do!!
The Chevy Stage was easily the worst with the sound quality being a disaster all weekend. That is something they really need to fix.
Soooo many highlights from this festival but here are some of my faves:
1) Bloody Beetroots Live- Wildest 75 minutes ever. Would love to see them at night (2015 Pre-party headliner). Do you wanna dance? 2) Capital Cities- High energy set. Super catchy songs. 3) Avett Brothers- They never disappoint, but they were extra strong at Hangout. 4) Gary Clark Jr.- Very rare to find someone who slays the guitar but also has an amazing voice. 5) Black Keys- Maybe it was the wine talking, but I was somewhere around the 5th row middle and it sounded great to me. 6) Amos Lee- Surprise favorite with the gospel choir and some wonderful covers (End of the Road took the cake).
OutKast was clear #1 to me i need to see them again somehow but outside of them i loved:
RDGLDGRN-love their songs, they are great with the crowd, the really brought it.
Diahrrhea Planet-them dudes shred the hell out of a guitar. they crowd surfed and played on donut floats it was insane, and the even hit us with Hey Ya at the end of the set.
St. Paul and the Broken Bones/Avett Brothers- I saw a little more than half of St Paul and then ran to Avetts who blew me away for the 5 songs or so i got to hear i was really impressed and def checking them out this summer when they come out my way.
Fitz and The Tantrums- Fitz never dissapoints. sing alongs, dancing, great light show, just a great party atmosphere created.
NEEDTOBREATHE- they might of sounded the best of anyone i seen and you can hear the passion in their voice it really was a great set.
Lonley Biscuits-they hit us with Juicy, Just a Friend, and No Scrubs they were so much fun and everyone was into it and singling a long.
Ozomatli-these guys had the best close to a set of the entire weekend for me. they came out to the beach and started a massive dance party filled with chants for like 15 minutes everyone was going nuts and i was lucky enoguh to be right next to them while it went on i was so fired up when it was done.
QOTSA destroyed the beach Friday night. I was about five rows back and I felt like I was gonna bust an eardrum (in a good way). The Black Keys were almost a letdown after that imo. Wish it could've been the other way around.
Anyone catch any word on what happened to the "15 truck loads of sand" they were supposed to have at the BMI stage? They even did an al.com article on it. That was a big let down for me...

Well guys, that was an unreal trip. This was my 4th time and was probably one my favorite experiences so far. Not only did I drive down there Wednesday from Atlanta and go back on Monday with my people, I ended up having to go back last night to try and find my girlfriend's phone that was buried in the sand from late late late Sunday night party activities. We won't go into reasons for the loss, but we eventually discovered the i-phone locator thingy once we got back (clear-minded) to ATL and noticed that the phone was in the spot that we had been sitting near our condo at that time. Thankfully it stayed on while buried that whole time and we were able to send a loss signal to the phone once we arrived back down to the Gulf late last night. We brought shovels andrakes and shit and found that thing within 10 minutes of searching. Once of the most exhilarating experiences of our lives. We then got a cheap hotel room and celebrated, keeping Hangout 2014 ragin' on. All in all, 26 hours in the car committed to these 2 trips. Worth every minute. This festival is unreal.
Favorite shows of the weekend: Danny Brown, Bonobo, Girl Talk, STS9 (awesome crowd, awesome set), Pretty Lights, Modest Mouse (played banger after banger), Queens of the Stone Age (Homme started a chant for a dude getting arrested by the po pos), Dumpstaphunk, Avett Bros, Outkast. That Outkast crowd was raging. It rivaled Counterpoint's. Big Boi and 3 Stacks seemed really into again.
Biggest disappointments: The Flaming Lips, The Chevy Stage all in all, not being able to get into that Moon Taxi Rage Set
Well, back to reality. What a weekend. Bought a loyalty ticket for next year just in case. Every year my friends and I think we should do something else instead of Hangout and every year by the time we leave we're saying, "that's the most fun I'm gonna have all year."
Met solidrock, good dude.
I had quite the eventful weekend besides the music aspect. If anyone saw 3 dudes with their hands behind their heads outside Pink Pony at like 12-1am, that was me and 2 of my friends. We were completely sh*tfaced and saw 2 kegs sitting outside and decided it'd be a good idea to take them back to the condo which was only 2 blocks away. Well they were full and we were all way too drunk to even attempt to carry them. Long story short, busted hard, cops got our info, let us go but cut our wristbands. I proceeded to go back to the condo and pass the f out. It was embarrassing as sh*t, I can't remember the last time I was that drunk. Next morning all 3 of us headed to the box office to see what we could do, w/o giving away the details, we all got our wristbands back. I then proceeded to be as sick as I've ever been in a 24 hr period. I could not keep anything down. I literally puked about 8 times throughout the day. Friday I was basically tied to my bed until 7 where I forced myself to see Queens and the Black Keys. I didn't even attempt drinking, just tried to keep water down all day and made it through those 2 shows. Calling it a rough start to the weekend would be an understatement.
After all that garbage, I was back to normal the next day. Was able to drink all Saturday and Sunday but just took it easy as I didn't wanna test my luck. I share the same sentiment as most on here. Unless you were in a solid spot, the Chevy stage was roooooough. Queens were amazing but we also had a great spot as most of us skipped the 6:15 block of acts to get there. That stage ruined Portugal. The Man for me especially. Gonna see them again at Lolla so hopefully that'll make up for it. Either way though, I thought it was an amazing weekend and maybe my favorite Hangout musically that I've seen.
Friday: Queens & Black Keys (sick all day). Queens absolutely killed it like I knew they would. Black Keys were meh but I agree there was some sounds issues there too. They weren't terrible, but nothing special at all.
Saturday: RDGLDGRN, Diarrhea Planet, Moon Taxi Rage Set, Bloody Beetroots, The Killers. For how early their set was and the small crowd they had, I thought RDGLDGRN killed it. Very engaging, ton of energy, and sounded good too. DP was what I expected- an hour of f*cking around, shredding guitar, and crowd surfing. Cool little show especially at that time of the day. The Rage set was paaacked. Me and 2 of my guys made friends with a nice couple that had a great table inside the Hangout bar so we just sat with them and watched the set from there. They seemed to have a good amount of the crowd moving but their timing was off on a few songs which was too noticeable to not mention. Also that set was crazy short. Meh. Then came 2 of the best shows I saw all weekend. Bloody Beetroots and The Killers. Both were amazing in entirely diff ways. Beetroots was perfectly crowded. Nothing crazy which allowed my group to get a perfect spot and not feel crammed at all. I was legit sore after that show. The Killers were the awesome sing a long I knew they'd be. Flowers is a beast live and they played basically every song I wanted to hear. Great live band.
Sunday: Bastille, Capital Cities, Portugal. The Man, St. Paul, Andrew WK, Outkast. Bastille was okay, Cap Cities were amazing (I knew what to expect from that Coachella stream, so much fun), Portugal was screwed up for me cus of their sound issues, St. Paul was insanely good, Andrew WK was fine for what he/they is/are, and then we get to Outkast. Best Sunday headliner I've seen at Hangout. That's an important thing to note imo because at that point in the weekend, people are drained. As excited as they are, it's hard to keep everyone moving and engaged and that's exactly what they did. Phenomenal set.
Overall, top 5 for the weekend: Outkast, The Killers, Queens of the Stone Age, Bloody Beetroots, Capital Cities. Honorable mention for St. Paul.
Hope everyone had as good a time as me. It's looking more and more likely that 2015 will be a go for me.
Question for everyone, does anyone know what condo complex that overlooks the fest? Like it's literally inside the fest and overlooks the Chevy Stage? How do you even get in that?

Phoenix All Suites. I imagine it's already booked up for next year by people that were already staying there and put down their deposit for next year. Wouldn't hurt to call and ask though. We're content with our Islands Winds West condo where we can hear music on the main stage from the balcony, but it would be nice to have some friends with a balcony at Phoenix to catch a show from. But you have to wonder at this point "can you even hear the music from Chevy stage there?" That'd be some ultimate people watching with binoculars from there though.
how did you like staying on the west side? i was a few blocks past Island winds at gulf cottage but there werent too many people hanging around me in fact our condo area was lame no one did anything. wasnt too many people on the each either except for a lot of youngins.
Appreciate it Longinus. Yeah I'm gonna take a look at it and see if it's possible because that's insane to be able to sit right their and watch acts. We could hear the music pretty clear from our San Carlos suite but if we could upgrade, might as well see what it would entail.

I've definitely done stupid shit like that before.
But wow, talk about your luck. The cops in Gulf Shores DID NOT ARREST YOU, and you got new wristbands! Sounds like your only punishment was some fear of getting arrested and being really sick the next day. Sucks, but getting arrested and/or having to buy new wrist bands would have been way worse.
Sorry about the bad times, but it sounds like for the majority of the weekend you rocked it.

I was scoping out different places earlier today and just got an email that says "All of the rooms in Phoenix All Suites have been rented out for the 2015 Hangout Music Festival by the director of the concert series."

Not surprising at all. We always have new neighbors in the smaller condo next door and this year it was people that worked the fest. I didn't even see them the first couple of days we were there, but I finally met one of them saturday morning and that guy said he installed most of the lighting. I made him a bloody mary because he was out of alcohol, had a hangover, and asked if he could get a drink until he made a run to the liquor store.
