Gulf Shores local here. Word down here is no more Panic at the wharf. The mayors of O.B. and Gulf Shores will not let it happen. Backward ass bible thumpers. With the money Panic brings in on a 2 or 3 day run, it is really quacking stupid.
They are also looking at not having Hangout fest after this year [2014], even though they paid a consultant to come in and look at the money it was bringing in. 31 million dollars in three days and these Quackers want to get rid of it because it's not "family oriented."

Of course not. We won't hear it from them until the fest this year when they are not selling next year's tickets in advance like they were this year. Or that dude could be completely full of sh*t. I think he is right for the most part though and it will depend on how next year goes with Red Mnt Ent running it.

Assuming this is true, the only thing that could make Hangout stay is the businesses that benefit from it speaking up. I'm convinced that the only reason Hangout has lasted this long is because its the brainchild of a local millionaire businessman with enough pull to beat up on the local politicians.
but then again surely there is some beach community on the Gulf Coast with no qualms about Ben Harper dropping the f-word during stage banter and would kill to have $31 million pumped into their economy. So maybe it wouldn't take that much of a push for whoever the hell is running this festival now to leave.
all i know is growing up going to Gulf Shores there is mad non-family friendly debauchery going on there whether or not Grouplove played a set that same day.

I've never been to Hangout so I'm curiously asking, is Hangout an actual family friendly festival or is that what the Gulf Shore politicians/community want it to be? Also I think the term family friendly can be interpreted differently.

It depends on your family. There's tons of fxcked up adults and youngun's, lots of hot scantilly clad chicks everyewhere, lots of fratty brahs etc. Only a nominal amount of wooks and hettis.
I'd take my kids there if I had any.
The Gulf Shores community view of 'family friendly' is more of "Non-catholic Christian White + money" type of atmosphere. I grew up going there on family vacations all the time, my mind was pretty blown they even let it go down the first year.

Taxi does an awesome Rage show. And, I'm not sure what y'all mean by family friendly? Is public enemy family friendly? kendrick? we could go on.. Has anyone cited a source on the "HMF is on shaky ground with GS" idea, or is that just a local's overheard gossip? I think the Auburn study holds way more water as to the Fest going on forever than that hearsay... Also, the locals would be a huge voice to be heard on the continuation, not just businesses. The locals are getting the majority of that money via public works and such. Don't sell yourself short. Either way I bet that's a "we'll see how this year goes, then talk" type of situation.

"It was a conditional commitment with the council having to approve the festival’s plans each year and having the ability to pull the plug if it strayed too far from the city’s family-friendly image."
What I believe is that there will be no return of WSP or SCI. And certainly no Phish/Furtur. The family friendly this is just an ongoing joke concerning locals getting shoked by the subculture of wooks, nitrous tanks, and heavy influx of drugs into the area that large jambands bring.
However, this festival has never booked any metal except by accident. They got Motorhead late in 2011 simply because they were touring with Foo Fighters. Now that trend may die with Huka not booking anymore simply because Huka is terrible at booking anything excepts hetti shiz. They don't book any metal shows ever. Now Red Mnt Ent could book something semi-metal like the do for Beale St for Hangout 2014. As I said earlier, I would not be suprised if they booked Black Sabbath. They're not going to book RATM though even if they wanted to. Common sense'd. "We know we haven't played in a while, and instead of playing like we should have when the 2012 election was happening and protesting over various political events related to US gov't invasions, we decided that we wanted to play our reunion show on the beach in alabama to a bunch of derps in their bathing suits staying at condos for the weekend. you know...just chill shiz, brah.
