I was out of the office most of today doing field stuff. I get back and have to cram as much paperwork time into the 45 minutes I have left before I leave. One of the first things I do is make sure some files are together for a meeting tomorrow that they scheduled on my day off (not a big deal. I wasn't going to contribute anything anyway). I go to tell my co-worker where I had placed them, so they could find them quickly tomorrow without going through my entire desk. He asks/tells me to go get another report out of the file room to go with it. (Keep in mind he's not my supervisor and our supervisor didn't even tell me I had to put the files I have out for them). I tell him I don't have time for it since I have other more pressing matters. He gives me the heavy sigh and says they'll just have to get it tomorrow but he can't do it because he's SO busy. I go to tell my supervisor where they are as well. While doing this I remember that what he asked me to get is already with the files (I am new at this part of the job so I forget shit). I go to tell him so he doesn't have to worry. He then proceeds to ask/tell me to go get the entire file (I have no idea why his needs have changed in the intervening three minutes.) I again tell him that I have other more pressing concerns and further that I didn't want to potentially confuse things since our supervisor hadn't told me to get them when we spoke about the meeting the other day. He again gives me the heavy sigh and bemoans how much he has to do in the 30 minutes he has before he leaves (like I don't have shit to do.) This is enough to irk me already just because he has a history of minimizing the work that I and the two others who do my job because he feels it is less complicated even though he has never actually done the work himself. Furthermore, he consistently has shown that he thinks his time is more valuable than ours. The crowning glory of this exchange happens after I go back to my desk to do what I need to wrap up when I hear him making a phone call about outside stuff. It's a responsibility for him because it has absolutely fucking nothing to do with work. I wanted to go over there and ask him how he had freed up that time in his schedule since it was so packed less than five minutes before that, but I had things to do. Dick.
If food poisoning wasnt bad enough, it's made exponentially worse when it starts with 3 hours to go in your work shift :/
I once got food poisoning at work and refused to allow myself to throw up for six to seven hours until I got off shift at which point I threw up in the bushes right outside the door.

So far today, I have read 17 and skimmed 20 pages of a 37 page opinion and read 5 pages of another 27 page opinion. That's a reasonable amount of work for having been here five and a half hours, right?

I've spent the last two days at work installing and configuring a server for a colleague who requested my assistance. Just a little while ago, he replied to my email telling him it was ready to tell me it was the wrong version of software. Ugh.

So I think I'm going to attempt and go to grad school full time but it's been so long since undergrad I probably have to get at least one letter of recommendation from one of my bosses. How do you ask for a letter of recommendation when the result likely means you're quiting your job?

the good news is, you're quitting to go back to school and not leave for another/better job which should make it easier. i would probably just preface it with what's going on and that you can think of no one you'd rather have recommend you than your boss blahbalhblahblahb.

Why not a trusted colleague? Doesn't even need to be from the same company I reckon

Actually that's a good point. I forgot one of my old bosses would be a good reference. I wanted someone that out ranked me and forgot about one of them. Thanks mister jimmy!
You need a vacation! Do you have one on the books?
Sort of. I have a trip to Knoxville planned for Thanksgiving. Not sure that really qualifies as a vacation, but it is at least time off.
Also, we've started doing an alternative work schedule where I am doing eight 9-hour days, one 8-hour day, and then I get to be off every other Monday. So because of that and Nevada Day on Friday, I'll have a four-day weekend this weekend, so I'm pretty excited about that!
I always want to elaborate on my frustration, but I feel weird about it. I doubt that anybody from my job would ever read what I've written on here, but I get paranoid. For this, I'll just say that I'm at least the fourth person to review the thing I am working on, but I am finding things in it that are just completely wrong. I know that mistakes happen, which is why we have this many levels of review, but it's pretty frustrating to be finding certain errors that just should never have made it to me.

They probably know you're on the job and are getting complacent about their own level of review. Stinkers.
And Thanksgiving totally doesn't count as a vacation vacation. You need somewhere to relax 100%!

Been working on this research project with a group since March, and have been late on completing it. The director asked me what the hold-up was, and I was honest with him. One of our members was suppose to code data in SPSS and do some formatting. What she said would take a week actually took a month.
I sent a group text out this morning asking if anybody wanted to meet tomorrow to get some work done. Apparently the member that took forever on her part to finish had made plans to meet with the other member of our group later today to finish it. She failed to inform me this was going down. Love having drama in the office.

3 of my co-workers are commiserating how teenagers come to their houses in shitty costumes just to get free candy. To the point that they will tell them how bad their costumes are or sometimes even withhold treats.
Being a teenager sucks enough, just give them the candy and move on! Sheesh.

I feel like I find an error of some sort in my own writing every time I review it. Regardless of which edit it is.
