I lived downtown on gay street for a year and normally just walked through world's fair (plus most engineering buildings were on east side of campus anyway). when me or the roommate would drive, we would just find a spot at a meter and throw away the tickets, because those were paid to Knoxville and not the University so they wouldn't put holds on our student accounts or anything. Never bought parking passes though because yeah, it was pointless.
then we wised up and moved to 17th and White, right behind the walgreens on the strip. only downside to that was we couldn't run errands or anything during class hours or we'd lose our spot on the street.
In law school, when I'd run out of patience looking for a street spot, I would sometimes park in the pay lot at 17th and White until I got booted in it one day. I'm not saying it's impossible that I forgot to pay, but I'm pretty sure I paid, mainly because I always did. But it was before the pay meters for lots like that were automated and gave receipts, so there was no way for me to prove that I did.
that was a weird lot. we lived right next to the restaurant/bar building in that lot, and it would never stay open for more than a few months. Who had control over the parking fees was always a bit ambiguous, but there were always tow trucks just hanging out in there that scared a lot of people off.
edit: holy shiz, I just google street viewed that area, and there is a gigantic apartment complex where guthries used to be that basically fills those parking lots between White and Cumberland. One of my favorite things in college was sitting on our porch watching traffic/people on the strip. now my view would be the backside of a building.

You have no idea. Cumberland is like a completely different area to when I went to school there. There is massive construction going on on the street itself which making it a bigger nightmare than it usually is.

Has a bunch of stuff popped up on Middlebrook, too? I spent like 15 minutes earlier looking at Google Earth trying to find where my first apartment was. I know it was somewhere off Middlebrook, I think near where it turned into University, but it seems like there's a lot more stuff in that area than there was when I lived there. I also came to the conclusion that they probably tore those apartments down because they were terrible.

I can't remember when they tore down whatever was there for the Food City that is on the corner of Western and Middlebrook now. Could that be it? I wouldn't think you'd be at the apartments that were there before the Hope VI houses came in, and I am not sure they were still around when you were in school anyway.

Shiiiit. Next thing you're gonna tell me I can't get $4 pitchers at cool beans anymore either.
I remember them developing some "masterplan" for the strip while I was in school, but the only changes I saw were more chicken finger places.
We haven't been back since Piper was born, but I'm lobbying to make it for a game this year. Downside to marrying a vol is she wants to go too.

Holy cow, I haven't thought of Cool Beans in forever! That was my tailgate spot for the 2007 season. We ended up at Cool Beans all the time. My one roommate (the owner of the house) got pissed off at another roommate for talking to his girlfriend at the Arkansas game that year (with McFadden, Felix Jones, and Peyton Hillis in the backfield) and he walked all the way home from Cool Beans (to our house which was off Papermill)! It was like 4 miles. Ahhh, memories. Also, I'm old.

It was 1998, before I went back to school. The place was called Creekside Apts., or something similar. It wasn't actually that close to University; it was further west, like up towards the Weigel's. It looks like there are several businesses there now that I don't remember being there, and I don't see anything that looks like those apartments, but it's not really surprising given that it's been that long and they were in pretty bad condition when I lived there.

No, that's close to where I lived for most of the time I was in school, but too far down Middlebrook for my first apartment.
I found a Yelp listing showing they existed and were closed. There are still apartments there, but now it's called Keystone Creek Apartments. And when I lived there, there was an old house at the end of the property, which is what I lived in. It appears they tore that down and renovated the main buildings.

haha, we were probably drinking there together a lot without knowing it. And I'm sure my wife probably served you more than a few times as well. She was a bartender there in '07/'08, so it was my usual watering hole.

So you know Donovan? Or Erin?
hmm. not that I recall. by the time I was dating my wife, there weren't any bartenders by those names there.

Despite having 3+ weeks notice that I was leaving, my boss gave me this crazy transition spreadsheet to "update" the day before my last day. W.T.F.
Also, computing services is telling me that I won't have a new email address for my new position; instead I'll just have aliases generated that will still go to the same inbox... So I'll be getting ALL the freaking emails I get for my current job, and will have to deal with sorting/deleting those. Also my (soon-to-be-ex)boss is asking for access to my inbox. Am I alone in not wanting to share my inbox with my (ex) supervisor?? I was fine with historical emails, but forever? It gives me the icks to know someone else will be able to see my inbox at all times.

So much for a easy/graceful exit.
Definitely not alone. I would not like that at all.

Thank goodness. I am getting more and more worked up about it the more I think about it. There HAS to be a better way.

Tell your supervisor you don't want to be embroiled in an email server controversy so you insist on strict security protocols.
One of my managers at work told me that there's been an open discussion amongst co-workers (for the past couple of months) on whether or not I was Autistic.

What a bizarre thing for a manager to tell you. He/she should've had a chat with your co-workers instead.

Someone has been making threatening phone calls to my job (a nursing home). Pretty sure it is someone from nursing, so a CNA or a nurse. My money is on a CNA because we have got some real pieces of work in that area.

Who threatens a nursing home?!
How disturbing. Workplace grievances like that make me nervous. Hopefully they're just blowing off steam in a completely inappropriate way.

I freaking jinxed myself. I forgot that one of the bonuses of working on a wide open college campus involves dealing with disgruntled students/ex-employees directly. A student who used to work here stormed into and then out of one of our labs upstairs and was yelling at people and slamming doors because they didn't want him to come back to work this semester. I didn't hear it, but we saw the kid come and leave, and the folks who witnessed it were pretty shaken when they came downstairs.
Trying to convince them to file a report with campus police.

Three or four years ago, I had a co-worker that had no sense of boundaries. One day he found out he had Asperger's, though he was in his 40s. He straight up asked me one day if I had Asperger's, and then had a bunch of questions for me about it. I rarely advertise that fact, so I'm wondering how exactly he figured it out - or if it was a lucky guess.
