Honestly, the most disappointing show for me was Pretty Lights. I took an amazing nap during The XX to get my energy up. I had heard such good things about PL and my expectations were high...it could have been my lack of energy, the fact that it was very chilly that night, maybe that I was sober or that his performance just wasn't didn't meet my expectations but I left about about 15 minutes to go see Porter Robinson. The lights were cool and all but I wanted to dance, not stand around and look at a light show until sunrise. Shrug.
* Araabmuzik - took them 15 minutes to hook up a laptop, and then he looked like he didn't even want to be there.
* Ariel Pink — his attitude ruined the show for me, as he acts like he's a brilliant musician instead of letting his music do the talking for him.
* Cat Power - She looked completely uncomfortable and out of touch with reality. "My Oklahoma sticker fell off. Hi America!" Just odd... she was fidgety, shaky. Was almost painful to watch.
* Dirty Projectors — people rave about them, but it's just not my thing. I gave them a solid chance for a few songs and then had to bail out of boredom.
* R. Kelly - that intro was a clusterquack. 60 seconds of singing then we have to wait for two minutes while the crane lowers him? He should have just kept singing... The lighting was awful and you couldn't see a thing.
* James McCartney — clearly he didn't get his dad's amiable personality.
* Swans — Not my thing. Monotonous and boring.
* Divine Fits — Again, just not my thing. Bailed after 1.5 songs. I felt it was unoriginal.
You have to admit - some of this seems like your fault for not knowing what you were getting into. I mean, I've seen Cat Power five times and your description is no different than every time I've seen her. In fact, your description makes her seem more lucid and on then two of the times I saw her. And James McCartney - yeah, 'nuff said. I can't speak to Araabmuzik's first 15 'cause I got there late, but I was grooving pretty good to him for the part we were there for. And if you don't know about the Swans ahead of time, yeah I could see that being a little intimidating. I wasn't able to catch them this go round, but man I wanted to.

You aren't really familiar with Chan Marshall, I take it?

Swans were phenomenal. They were anything but monotonous and boring. I thought it was the most engaging set of the festival. I was so close to not seeing them at all, let alone the entire set, but I just couldn't get myself to leave. They were even better than when I saw them last year.
Some quick notes on those listed: I thought Nas, Kendrick and Death Grips were awesome. Great distorted lines and vocal reverb during DG.
Saw Araabmuzik at Coachella last year, no idea why he changed genres and started playing electrohouse with a pinch of trap. Purity Ring sounded exactly the album, should have seen it coming. Baroness was on fire, but the song selection turned me away.
You're blowing $300+ on a ticket, research the lineup a little.

I really enjoyed Tame Impala's performance, but I was kind of turned off by the crowd around me. It just seemed liked everyone needed to be on something to enjoy the show. Plus, the ASAP crowd coming in after was pretty lame by not letting us get out of the tent before they all came rushing in. Everyone was basically deadlocked for a few moments trying to get out.
Nas - What's everyone's disappointment here? Genuinely interested about what people weren't really feeling.
Nas was great. Nas was the more solid overall show.
That's what I'm saying, I didn't really see anything wrong with the performance. Granted, it was my first time really seeing a Nas show, but I felt like he did an awesome job. He had great chemistry with the backing band, his flows were decent, thought the sound was just fine from the pit.
I thought Action Bronson was horrible. All he did was walk around in the crowd for most of his set and when he was on stage ask people to throw him some weed.
To be fair, he also threw plenty of weed into the crowd as well.
I kind of expected an unorthodox show when I arrived at this one and thoroughly enjoyed it.

everything besides the polyphonic spree at the fountain on thursday night was disappointing because it was too damn crowded. and i thought i was mentally prepared for it. other than that, i can't think of a disappointing show i saw.

Wilco really was a big disappointment for me. They were one of, if not my most, anticipated shows and I just wasn't feeling it. I really don't think they performed badly it was just a combination of the sound issues and crowd atmosphere. I was fairly close and everyone around me was just waiting for Paul and not into it at all. Some kept saying "I hope this is the last song" after every song, which was pretty discouraging.
Definitely passion pit and jack Johnson. Passion pit just sounded horrible and jack Johnson couldn't remember the words to his own songs. I know it's been a while, but c'mon.
Yep, passion pit didn't even do an encore. I didn't care for seeing jack johnson
Which stage ruined me last year so this year I made sure to get to those sets early for a good spot. 3 of my top 5 shows were on WHICH and they all sounded great. My advice, avoid the entire left side.
I think the large crowds at which really projected the sound in some weird ways. I know for several bands, I could have great audio on stage right, back by the beer tent. Friday, after McCartney, I was trying to see the xx, but could near anything. When we walked back to our tent, in pod 4, it sounded like I was front row center. I was dancing to the best which audio from outside of centroo and 4 football fields away.
They should truck about 30k people in for a day and sound check it right
Only dissapointing/bad set I saw all weekend were The Stepkids. Was looking forward to them, but the mix was bad, three people was not enough for how rich their sound is, and they attempted to jam out every song and did so quite poorly (on the contrary, Tom Petty can jam like a motherQuacker)
That being said, that was the only set I saw the entire weekend that wasn't good-to-mind-blowing. And being at The Stepkids allowed me to be under a tent when that storm came.
OMG they were awful. And tgeir set went on and on. It was like they'd get a crowd reaction to a note, rif, or scream, then repeat that constantly trying to get the same effect. It was like having a girlfriend who was OK in bed the first time, but after that she just keeps doing the same thing over and over.

It was Django Django for me. I heard like one or two songs on record beforehand and thought it was alright. I was there for FJM and Allen Stone rail, but I did not enjoy Django Django one bit. No sense of dynamics. When I say this, it's not that I don't enjoy loud shows, it was just that there was no dynamic shift where I was. It was all just blaring, which to me is uninteresting if there aren't even quieter songs or ones that build. It was also kind of monotonous. About 80% of the songs they played had extremely similar chord progressions, just barely modified enough for it to kind of sound like a different song. This is just my opinion, I loved the following shows and was glad that so many people seemed to be digging Django Django.

I generally agree with this assessment. I thought Wilco put on a good show, and the setlist was pretty t*ts. It just seemed like most of the people in the crowd were either just waiting for Paul or unfamiliar with Wilco's music, or both. Didn't affect me, I still enjoyed the show.

I'm actually a big fan of their album, but my complaint was more with the vocal mixing than anything. They seem to have the electro-folk thing down pretty well, but their live show is a lot more focused on the electro than the folk. In my opinion, their harmonies and guitars are what make them special and too much of the time it was hard to hear either and I was dead center, half way back.
If Zack Hill had been there for Death Grips, that set would have been amazing. Instead, it was just kinda meh. I expected that though after I found out they were gonna have no drummer at all on their set.
i saw them with zack hill a couple of months ago and it was awesome. i still thought the bonnaroo set was crazy though. had a great time starting up some pits with my friends and going nuts. front of the crowd turned into an awesome party. I saw you so many times throughout the weekend (cloney, reno 911, and a couple others i cant remember) and wanted to come say high but you were diggin the shows you were at and i didnt want to disrupt. next year im going to have to come to the brunch.

This is my same reaction. I don't think it was an amazing show like so many were this weekend. They came, did their thing and left. Not that I thought it was a lazy show just not spectacular.i enjoyed it.

This entirely. The ONLY show the whole weekend I was bored to tears for. Thank god 21 Pilots made up for that hour and then some.

I'm shocked to hear so many people didn't enjoy Wilco. I was pretty much on the pit rail on the left side and I had a BLAST. I thought they sounded great and they played a ton of my favorite songs. Sorry everyone didn't have a similar experience.
The only band that I didn't particularly care for was The XX. I stopped by for two songs and was pretty uninterested the whole time. It was no big deal though as we stopped by on a whim while on the way to superjam, I think (we were definitely en route for something else at the time).

Grizzly Bear bummed me out. Left Foals early to catch their set, and wished I hadn't. It wasn't the sound quality as much as the energy, or lack there of from the band.

Only disappointments I had were not being able to see much at a couple of the shows, but that's hardly the fault of the entertainers. Had a great frickin' time. Had forgotten how good Dwight Yoakam is, for one thing (even if they spelled his name wrong in the program )
Edited to yak about Wilco: Also a huge fan, remember seeing them right down front at What in 2004 when it was still a sand pit... have probably seen them easily two dozen times. I thought it was a great show but I really wish they'd mix up the set list at least a little bit - you always get pretty much the same lineup, which could explain the low-energy. Really? Do they have to play 'California Stars' as the only track, ever, from two of the most amazing albums of the late 90s, the Mermaid Avenue discs? I realize I'm going to have to give up the secret handshake for this, but I'm really pretty sick of hearing 'Impossible Germany'. They need to record something else where Nels gets his groove on, maybe. Also, love 'Art of Almost' but only one song from that album? I could go on...
I really don;t understand the hate for Ariel Pink, Alt-J, or R. Kelly (watched first hour of him from VIP pit). Those were in my top 10 favorite sets. I had so much fun at R. Kelly...most surprisingly awesome set of the weekend. Ariel Pink melted my face off. And Alt-J sounded f'n great. Nas' performance definitely wasn't as impressive as it was at Voodoo last year, but he was still enjoyable to hear while waiting in Bjork pit line. I think he would have done better with a late nite set.
The only disappointing sets that I caught were Death Grips, Deep Vally, and Billy Idol. I though Death Grips had a live drummer? Only watched 2 songs and decided to go ahead and book it over to Mule. Deep Vally was just really boring to me, but maybe it was because my brain was too melted after Ariel Pink to enjoy them. After seeing the beginning of soul superjam, I caught Weird Al play Amish Paradise and left during costume change to next song, I caught Rebel Yell and White Wedding from Billy Idol's set and it just felt like karaoke so I was like "f*ck this I'm going back to superjam." Got back to superjam during Hot Fun.
