My only disappointment was Japandroids. The guitar sounded like an acoustic. I should have left for Father John Misty. Figured that out when we caught the last couple songs of his set. I had not seen Ariel Pink before or Cat Power, but neither jumped out at me. We were there for the taping spots. I'd never caught Wilco live, but enjoyed the set. I thought the crowd for Tame Impala was pretty into the set, but the idiots coming in after were rude as hell. The Superjam was great and is on a lot of people's best of lists. Lumineers were OK, but didn't make me go WOW. Saw Passion Pit because we had to get in for a good Paul spot and sat during most of it. Just wasn't my thing, but I danced a bit near the end. Allen Stone was a pleasant surprise and ALO was fun. Good special guests for that one.
Yeah, guitar mix for Japandroids was way too low but I had a great time. Ariel Pink was fucking awesome, I thought. Only thing I saw that I didn't enjoy at all was Nas.

I'm with you on Nas, but I figured it was just a generational thing, since I'm a bit younger than most. I feel like I would've enjoyed it pretty well if I had been familiar with him. But I mean at least he had a live band.
the rap shows in general were a dissapointment. they just dont translate well to a live stage imo. other than that the only other show that let me down was bustle in your hedgerow. it was awesome with britanny on vocals but after that superjam i couldnt get into the instrumental zep.. just didnt feel right
Araabmuzik was awful. What, were his buttons broken?
He started late, the music was all out of sync, he talked like he'd just thrown down the most incredible performance in the history of music festivals at great personal sacrifice, and--most alarmingly--a drunken Canadian spilled beer on my wife.

I mean, I loved Nas growing up. I'm only 24 so it's not like I'm Grandpa MC by any means, but I just thought his performance was weak and his band was boring.

The only show that disappointed me was Of Monsters and Men. I just didn't feel it. The sound problems didn't help, but even when the sound came through, it seemed lacking. It made me sad, cause they were pretty highly anticipated by me.

I felt Passion Pit's sound was very bad. People who were up close for this show seemed to like it, but I was in the back and all I heard was bass. I couldn't hear any words at all. I was pissed cause this was the only show on the What Stage that day that I had a problem with.
Only disappointments I had were not being able to see much at a couple of the shows, but that's hardly the fault of the entertainers. Had a great frickin' time. Had forgotten how good Dwight Yoakam is, for one thing (even if they spelled his name wrong in the program )
Edited to yak about Wilco: Also a huge fan, remember seeing them right down front at What in 2004 when it was still a sand pit... have probably seen them easily two dozen times. I thought it was a great show but I really wish they'd mix up the set list at least a little bit - you always get pretty much the same lineup, which could explain the low-energy. Really? Do they have to play 'California Stars' as the only track, ever, from two of the most amazing albums of the late 90s, the Mermaid Avenue discs? I realize I'm going to have to give up the secret handshake for this, but I'm really pretty sick of hearing 'Impossible Germany'. They need to record something else where Nels gets his groove on, maybe. Also, love 'Art of Almost' but only one song from that album? I could go on...
Sorry if I misunderstood, but they totally played more songs from The Whole Love other than the Art of Almost. Born Alone, Dawned On Me, I Might, and Whole Love.

You know, I missed a portion of the set due to waiting in line forever for the portalets, so I'm probably talking out of my ass on this (except for the Mermaid issue - drives me crazy that they never play other songs off those albums, but I guess I get it since many of the vocals are BB.) Thanks for the correction. Hope it was awesome.
Saw them play two nights back to back at at the Ryman with one of my favorite artists ever - Nick Lowe - in May 2012, so maybe I'm just disgruntled I don't get to hear '36 Inches High' every time now )

I was in the Pit and it sounded pretty awesome. A bit boomy in the bass, so I could see how further back the bass could have swallowed up the midrange/vocals. I don't think the set was as high energy as their Hangout set, but it was still awesome.
What usually has the best sound. I hate to hear about these issues with Passion Pit and Wilco.

Only thing with passion pit is, why didn't they do any encore? They just stopped singing, said think you and walked off.
That was really my only complaint. I was 5 folks back from the pit area, and in front of the stage on the right side so I had really good seats sound wise. Passion pit sounded good to me, but then just walking off when there was an hour before wilco just seemed like a dick move. Maybe that's what they had to do, idk. Just odd
Kendrick Lamar is the only one out of the shows I saw. Its way more noticeable how often he says "b*tch" or talks about his d!ck when you hear him live. It made me kinda uncomfortable since I was there with some girls.
He should probably have used "slampiece" instead. Less offensive.
Wu tang clan- just awful Animal collective- just as bad as wu tang SOUND AT WHICH AND THE OTHER TENT- FOR om&m, lumineers, Walk the moon, ASAP, tame impala, 21 pilots... Ariel pink- annoying and terriable Rap super jam- sloppy

Slampiece don't kill my vibe, slampiece don't kill my vibe...

I had ignorantly lumped OM&M in with the folk revival sound that I hate these days and had no expectations for their set. I was up close with my friend and we were both quite taken with the show.
Sound at Which for anyone further back has and always will it seems be an issue.

Passion Pit played less then their set time at both Buku and Hangout, so I was prepared for this. I want to say they played 15-20 minutes less than they could have at both those fests.
Of Monsters And Men - BONNAROO!! SHAME ON YOU for still F-ing up the sound on Which Stage. No one could hear a thing. I had to go see something else because it was impossible to even hear the girl sing. Still angry about this.
This was super annoying. We weren't even that far out and couldn't here it at all. Bummer. Then standing in a similar spot for P.TM we could hear it great. Which stage really is a coin toss and when it lands on the wrong side it really is very frustrating.

If they ended early that is one thing, but I do not think I have ever seen bands (besides headliners, and sometimes late nights) perform an encore. I think that is pretty standard for festivals.

Which Stage is one I try to avoid unless an AMAZING act plays their simply because of the sound issues I usually find there.
This. I've learned that, especially if there is a conflict between a band I want to see on Which or a band I want to see elsewhere, I always go for the elsewhere. Chances are Which is going to just bum me out.
The only act I caught at Which this year was Byrne & Annie, and luckily the sound was pretty awesome from my spot. I was behind the SBD/beer tent, so I couldn't see the stage but had a great view of the screen, the midbass was thumping perfectly and I had plenty of room to get down (along with a few others in that spot that had the same idea as me).
Next year I'm strongly considering VIP if for no other reason than to always have the option of seeing shows on Which, assuming they still have the VIP pit next year.

This was my first VIP year, and every show I saw at the Which Stage was fantastic. Especially Grizzly Bear, which was my favorite show of the weekend behind Paul McCartney. I walked into the VIP pit for that show about 10 minutes before they went on. Distance from the Which Stage can turn a terrific performance into an awful one. However, in close proximity to the Which Stage, the sound is actually great.
