finally able to post on this. i was in the pit and loved every minute of that set, my only complaint being that he started 15 minutes late and ended 15 minutes early. everyone at my camp was in the middle/front of the field and hated it. reason being that all they could see was a giant red rectangle for basically the whole show. its a bummer because i think a lot of people missed out. i'm glad i endured the madness of the pit. 100% worth it
So this was easily the best set of the weekend, right?
Not even close, that would be Grouplove.
Grouplove literally turned into an insane rave party. There were four people crowd surfing at a time for an hour straight. These two short, naked gay guys formed a human pyramid to see the stage. The crowd surged forward four times to get closer to the stage. People were jumping up and down and going nuts. My brother got kicked in the head. Some huge rolling guy hugged me five times.
Grouplove was full 45 minutes before they went on, and still people kept coming, trying to get into the tent. Their set was insane! They were bouncing around the stage for an hour straight. They sounded great, they looked great, they put on the best show at Roo, no question.

This is how I feel, I think if you love Kanye and were able to see it was probably great. Not being able to see him at all made it very difficult to get into it for me. In a way this show reminded me of Beyonce at Made in America last year. Instead of the screens showing the performance they were showing her music videos for a lot of the show. In both cases maybe they don't play many festivals, so they wouldn't realize a lot of the crowd is is unwilling or unable to get close enough to see and the screens should be utilized differently than their normal tour shows.
I'm not a big Kanye fan, but I do like some of his popular songs, my husband is a fan though. We were right around the middle of the field. I think most people thought he came on stage 15 minutes late because for the first 5-10 min we couldn't even tell if the show had started or not. We couldn't see anything the entire time we were there. Really couldn't ever tell if he was on stage or not since the screens weren't used and because of his stage setup. My husband knew that he does the rants and warned me ahead of time but we still lost interest about halfway through and decided to leave early for late night. We could definitely hear the boos though, especially after he proclaimed he was the greatest rockstar on the planet and made up more excuses for his 2008 performance.

It's nice to see some good reactions to his set on here. I was at the camp site drinking rum and taking care of some things during his set, and was really really regretting it. Then I asked people about it all weekend long and literally didn't hear one good thing about his performance.
After looking at the video of his rant and looking at his set list, I'm pretty glad I didn't go. I probably would not have enjoyed some one being so negative in the state of mind I was in at the time. It also looks like he didn't play any of my favorite songs by him other than touch the sky.
How can you not love Kanye rants? Those were easily some of the most entertaining moments of the weekend.
Eh, entertaining like watching a car wreck I guess. If this type of rant is what kanye does at all of his concerts I probably won't be attending one any time soon. I try to ignore the person that Kanye is as much as possible and focus on his music, which is hard to do when he's yelling at you with a microphone.
I had a terrible spot. Couldn't see Kanye and was stuck near a few hecklers which was a major buzzkill. It just was kind of a bummer how much better it seemed to be in the pit than for those of us farther back.

Yelling at you that he's humbled by the number of people there and how he sees himself as a top act that is here to rock 70,000 people and give them a huge show. He talked about his mindset of putting all his effort in everything he does that nice College Dropout was released 10 years ago. He also gave us a taste of his mindset going into the 2008 set (mother passed away months before, pearl jam went long, his gases were leaked and defaced with grafitti before even taking the stage) and how he took all the blame. He wasn't yelling at the fans. He was yelling at the media.I remember a TON of "fuck the press" chants.

I enjoyed Ye's set, but could've used more songs. Look at his runtime, compare this weekend's setlist to Yeezus tour setlists and it's hard to deny we came up short. I remember being surprised when he announced Blood on the Leaves would be his last song, and there's why.

Fair enough, I didn't see the set after all. I'm going off of youtube videos and what people have told me through word of mouth. Regardless though, I think it's a shame that 90% of what I heard about this set is how terrible his attitude was and how long his rants were. He certainly has the capacity as a musician to put on an amazing show, and I was hoping everybody would be talking about how he just destroyed a 2 hour + set of bangers and deep tracks and surprises rather than how his ego got in the way of the show again.

THIS.
And I did see the set. And went into it honestly thinking this was gonna be the likely result. And the set was not ruined by hecklers or haters for me...none of that around me. The sound was great where I was. I mean....when he ripped right into a thundering version of Black Skinhead? I was hyped. Ready for him to rock it. Wanted it.
But then he managed to suck a lot of that out of me over the course of the set. When he played....it was good. But the endless excuses and whining just plain got old. I thought I was gonna be making a mad dash to Ice Cube at the end of his set. Instead, I left early to go watch mf'n Cube rip shit up. Like a pro. A gangsta.
How many songs did we lose out of the set for these rants? I mean hell...at least wait until in between songs. Didn't he pause during Heartless for some more verbal diarrhea?
And its not that I don't get Kanye. I dig his music. I like his bravado, his calling out of everyone...including himself, his aggressive attitude.....but I like it in his lyrics. And it is in his lyrics. So why waste so much of our time during a "performance" hashing out rants of stuff he already says in his music, or in interviews, or on twitter, or any one of the multitude of other venues for showing his ass he so often takes advantage of?
people went into this set looking for things to hate.
some wouldn't be happy unless kanye prostrated himself upon the stage and begged forgiveness.
overall the behavior of the crowd was repugnant. just purely hateful before the lights even came down.
For some that is most definitely true. But not the case with me. And I'll probably give him one more chance if the opportunity presents itself. Hoping that, without the level of negative energy in some of the crowd and the back story, he can somewhat stay on track. But at this point I honestly think it might be a crap shoot.

I napped at camp during Kanye's set so I would have enough energy for late nights. I'm glad to hear that those who wanted an awesome show got what they wanted. The folks who showed up to heckle and screw up a show for people wanting to see it need to get a life.
I must have gotten insanely hype for Kanye, because I left that set with a blistering migraine. Like, head throbbing. I could barely make it through Ice Cube. Deciding to skip Neutral Milk Hotel and go camp out on the What during Vampire Weekend to get a rail spot for Kanye was the best decision I ever made, though.
Here is a study in opposites. Okay, I was skeptical, wasn't even going to go to Kanye, but I decided to and was impressed at how awesome the first four songs were, but then the ranting and the 10 minute interlude of "singing" the same words over and over, then more ranting and talking about himself. I then left to get a spot for Trucks Superjam and I love some Kanye.
Jack White: lots of music, one after another, then when he talked, this is what he said. "Thank you. I know some of you have been waiting out there all day. I understand how hard that is, and I want you to know how much I appreciate you! Thank you!" Then a lot more music.
