I must have gotten insanely hype for Kanye, because I left that set with a blistering migraine. Like, head throbbing. I could barely make it through Ice Cube. Deciding to skip Neutral Milk Hotel and go camp out on the What during Vampire Weekend to get a rail spot for Kanye was the best decision I ever made, though.
Pretty much the same thing happened to me. I was fine after Kanye so I made my way over to Ice Cube. I bought a Spicy Pie and a lemonade which were good, but ten minutes after I finished those, my head felt horrible. The whole right side of my face was throbbing and I felt like throwing up. It made it very hard to enjoy Ice Cube so I left around 1 then went back to camp and slept till almost 9am. I'm disappointed that I had to miss Die Antwoord and Chance

Yeah, I was really sad I had to miss Chance's set. Thank god we live in the era of good quality cell phone videos and stuff. Hopefully it'll be on YouTube soon. I don't think he was on the stream, was he?

From what I know, Kanye wasn't even on stream. That's just what I heard, but if it's true, then it's dumb to not stream one of your headliners.
I loved the set...it was funny hearing all the early 20s bros on Saturday morning talking about how lame the screen effects and minimal lighting was.
I look at it as Kanye trying to treat his live shows as performance art but a lot of the people that come to see him view him as an unintelligent hoodrat. He challenges the rules of hip hop. Maybe its just me but I'd much rather hear an extended "Runaway" + a rant over Ice Cube doing a lame Nate Dogg tribute.
No, I know Kanye wasn't on the stream. And I get why, he wanted the focus to be on his camera/screen on the stage. The side screens just added to the show, the few times they did anyway.
I meant Chance the Rapper when I mentioned the stream, though.
I agree quite a bit with this. They are both insanely talented and creative and both are quite narcissistic. It is hard to tell if those parts of them have something to do with the other. The narcissism isn't going to keep me from enjoying the hell out of their music, but it does make me wonder if they would be any fun at all to hang out with.
As far as the Kanye show goes I thought it was a bit of a weak set list (for him) and the lack of side screens hurt (I wasn't that far back, but was off to the side and couldn't see half the middle screen). Still in the top half of the shows I saw this weekend (and that says a lot in a positive way), just not the epic throw down I was hoping for.

Whether you enjoyed it or not, it's undeniable that Kanye had the most memorable set of the entire weekend. It was the set that people were still quoting, making signs about, writing on the walls, and arguing about until the end of the festival. It was by far the set that had the most silence in between songs because everyone was on their tows waiting to see what would happen next. You really expected Kanye to play a Greatest Hits set and put on a smile to please everybody? Like funkybuttlovin said above, this is exactly what Kanye wanted. I feel sorry for anyone that was in the back and had a hard time seeing him and had to endure the few hecklers, but up front (admittedly I'm a huge fan) it was the most entertaining concert I've ever been to by far.
Also, everyone that said he was hating on Roo either wasn't listening or has to work on their English comprehension skills. The last thing he said was literally "I love y'all mothafuckers"
Kanye's late-starting performance at 2008's Bonnaroo stands as the single most notorious set in the festival's 13-year history. I wasn't there, but I do remember officially-sanctioned anti-Kanye graffiti all up and down the walls near the Bonnaroo arch the following year. All day Friday, idiots could be found toting "Kanye is a gay fish" signs from tent to tent; clearly, all is not forgotten.
Still, there he was, out on the big stage, performing a scaled-back version of the much-ballyhooed Yeezus tour setup, his two-hour timeslot largely unopposed on the other stages. From where I was standing—not quite halfway back, towards the right of the stage—the mix was spot-on, but the volume was pathetic; Jack White, from the same spot the next night, was easily twice as loud. Not only did the Bonnaroo faithful not seem to want him back, but the festival itself seemed to be working against him. So when he started to outline the reasons for his return—to "piss all on the port-a-potties" people had tagged with anti-Kanye screeds—he elicited all the boos people had clearly been waiting to unload.
Thing is, I stood and watched those same people rapping along to "Good Life" not seconds later. Hating Kanye is a sport for some people, and when he dares to push back, they rub their hands with glee. The set wasn't without its problems: the sound, the long silences between songs, the comparatively spartan setup. But the real problem with Kanye's set had nothing to do with Kanye comparing himself to Henry Ford, or running "Blood on the Leaves" back a few too many times. Bonnaroo prides itself on its community vibe, but that vibe can quickly turn ugly when that community finds a common enemy to turn on. Here we have the most important musician pop music's seen in ages, a guy whose sonic ambitions and emotional openness almost singlehandedly reconfigured rap music. But he was kinda late to his set at Bonnaroo one time, and the loyalists just couldn't believe that the grudge they'd been holding onto for six years might turn out to be mutual. Lisa Simpson said it best: Why would they come to his concert just to boo him?
Kanye killed it. Being front row in the pit was phenomenal. That was the most energy I've ever felt at a concert at Bonnaroo. It was hands down the best rap concert I've seen. I waited 11.5 hours to be front row and it was 100% worth it. I love you Kanye.

What was everyone expecting from Kanye? You knew he was going to go on rants. He does them at every one of his concerts. You knew it was coming and still showed up and then complained about it. Some of you are just ridiculous. Then Jack White the next night goes on stage and gives you basically the same kind of rants and gets praised for it. It's seriously hard to understand some of the point of views of some of the people on this board. I can understand if the music isn't your taste but all the other stuff is truly hard to grasp sometimes. So what if he thinks he is best or biggest rockstar in the world. Why does that make you not like a show or an album? He is not your friend or spouse. You don't have to live with him so why care about he says. He puts out music. Listen and shut up. You will enjoy it more.

By the time I made it to Kanye's set, the entire crowd was running from him. Honestly, I was incredibly pumped to see him because we all know his show would've been awesome, if he had actually put on a show. BUT the atmosphere was ominously negative; Something I'd never experienced within my past 5 years at Bonnaroo. The crowd I ended up standing near was so overbearingly hateful that it no longer felt like the Bonnaroo I used to consider my home away from home. Roo has always been about the crowd, the people and atmosphere... Usually the happiness and positive vibes are uplifted by the united gratefulness people experience together at these amazing shows. It feels like Roo is just rampant, now, with people looking for any place to go to melt their brains and go completely out of control - to a dangerous level. You used to be able to have "fun" without wondering WTF kind of fun you were actually ABOUT to have, if you catch my drift. I never worried about this kind of thing before until I had to be carried back to my campsite (and I really didn't go too crazy but I think I was surrounded by shady people); Not to mention the absolute wild-eyed kids who thought they were taking molly and probably were actually on meth. It was the most aggressive, strange crowd I've ever seen and a lot of it first became apparent to me at Kanye's set. Okay, ending long rant now - The battle of Douchebag Concert-Goers vs. Kanye murdered Bonnaroo this year.
You're just radiating positivity, aren't you? Maybe Bonnaroo isn't the problem, maybe it's the individuals themselves that end up changing the vibes year to year.
I'm just saying this year had a very different vibe to it. I enjoyed it... but once Kanye hit the stage, it really sketched me out. Like an asshole, I yelled "Give him a chance, guys!" then he started auto-tuning his greatness.

Not trying to bash you; Just sharing my side of the experience. It was really strange to see a sea of people fleeing a show, watch drunk guys fist fighting with 5 cops trying to detain just one of them and failing, all while hearing "Fuck Kanye" and people boo-ing him all around me. I was really excited for his set... I guess I just ended up in a rowdy area in the crowd.
It seemed like any other year to me, and I've been since 2007.
Oh no, not autotune! Not like it's essential to his music or anything. He only had an entire album based around autotuning himself for his songs.
Dude... Chill. There's nothing personal going on here, and I like a lot of Kanye's music.. Haha.. Just sharing that there was some shit going down in that crowd that a lot of people didn't see.
I heard no Fuck Kanye chants, no boos - did see a few fights, but I'm not going to attribute that to Kanye. I'm going to chalk that up to festival goer ignorance and being drunk/messed up.
I saw heaps and heaps of people leaving during Jack White, why is no one talking about that?

I tried. I failed.
This whole "Everything autotune is bad" attitude is some of the dumbest shit ever. When rappers do it it's terrible, when artists like Bon Iver do it it's apparently beautiful art.

Yeah, sounds like I was just in a rough area of the crowd. A few friends I camped with said where they were standing, that it was a fantastic show. I don't doubt it. I think I was just in the wrong place.I did hear that Jack White threw out some media talk, like Kanye, but didn't hear much negative response to it. I couldn't speak for that one, though. I missed him due to some kinda Bonnaflu.
That's why I don't hang back for shows I really want to see, I push my way into the crowd and to the front. The back of the crowds usually have all of the people just gossiping and talking shit for the hell of it and not being respectful of those around them.

I understand what you're saying, but it would have been nice to see one of the most anticipated sets on my schedule

I don't believe that Bonnaroo would pay the money to book Kanye just to purposely make him look bad by playing his volume much lower on purpose.
Looks like the arguments will continue. I do hope the show was recorded somewhere so I can really look at the rant people are complaining about. I took it way differently than many others and feel like his positive parts of the rant are being overlooked.

If you want to generalize that everyone who had a problem with the set did so because Kanye is black then you just sound silly. I'm sure that plays a part for some but I think your off when you make it just about race.

Two things. One, I doubt Jack White's rants ate up nearly as much time....especially considering he gave an extended set versus a shortened one. And Jack delivered a helluva setlist in comparison as well.
Two, i like his music and his albums. What you say about his meglomania shouldn't change that? Well it's precisely why I still listen to him, and showed up for his show. I honestly don't give two shits about most of the musicians I care about's personal lives. Personal knowledge of them has very little to do with how their music affects me. Most of the time I can't even name members of a bands names. Doesn't lessen my appreciation of them. Just means that info is mostly irrelevant to me. But to respond to "He puts out music. Listen and shut up"....I'd say "Then play that music. Shut the fuck up and perform". Because you're right...i don't really care what he thinks. So I don't need half the performance wasted with him drilling me with just that. And yes we know he is going to rant...we just hope for it to be minimal. Or I do anyways.
And @foxandhound, you seem dead set on making this a racial issue. any particular reason why? Or just following Kanye's tendency to pull the race card?
