Then Jack White the next night goes on stage and gives you basically the same kind of rants and gets praised for it.
I felt kanyes were a bit more aggressive and drawn out than Jack's comments. The message was similar (media twisting things) but Jack seemed to express it in a way that made it about the fans and not just himself. I didn't mind either rant but don't consider the way they ranted to be the same.
I do agree with the idea that some just went in looking for stuff to hate. And I did also think it hilarious that boos were followed up with singalongs. But there are a lot of hypocrites in the festival crowd (people that say radiate positivity but will push through you and step on your girlfriend if they need to be up front for a show) so that makes sense.

I'm a Kanye fan and I hadn't seen him live before Friday. Coming in, this was my second-most anticipated set behind Arctic Monkeys. In my opinion the show was good... Maybe slightly disappointing, as I had really built it up in my head. The sound and effects were spot on, but the music was constantly interrupted for those rants and they really didn't connect with me at all. I still love the music and I'll still jam to Kanye, but after my first Yeezus show I don't think the whole "this guy is the best performer out there" thing is justified at all.
jack white has never been late for a bonnaroo set. also hes white. theres the difference.
If you want to generalize that everyone who had a problem with the set did so because Kanye is black then you just sound silly. I'm sure that plays a part for some but I think your off when you make it just about race.
Also, Jack was late to his set this year.
i dont think its the only reason.
but i think the fact that one is a white person with a guitar as opposed to a black hip hop artist plays a part.

Definitely plays some part for some folks. Sorta like those who defend Wayne coyne rants but only want Kanye to play his songs. I did feel a bit let down by the show but I attribute some of that to my own hype that I built up. I agreed with monster who earlier said that it wasn't as good as the yeezus show. Still...the focus on rants and not the music is strange. Take out the rants that people disliked and you'd have little to bitch about.

I don't like Wayne particularly either (puts flame retardant suit on). And as you said...Kanye's rants definitely had a more aggressive tone. Honestly, I think what jacked him up was his own insecurities and constant need to prove himself even after he's "made it". The 'haters' mind fucked him. Some have said this is what he planned all along? Well this is also what the hecklers had in mind....that the pressure would prove too much for him to not go off. I agree tho'...take out those rants and I really wouldn't have anything to bitch about. And maybe I built this set up a little too much in my head myself. Hearing all the rave reviews and seeing setlists of the Yeezus tour had me thinking this show would be epic. And maybe it was....but not for the reasons I'd hoped. I hoped for redemption. This was not that.

So glad me and CPK went through the huge hassle it took to get into the pit for this show. BY FAR the best of the weekend. Not even close.
I'd imagine hearing boos/heckling would've killed my vibe a bit. Who even does that? I've probably been to thousands of shows in my life and have honestly never boo'd a live act. If you don't like something, just leave... How hard is that?
And the love for Jack White's rants and hate for Kanye's rants is pretty crazy. Hearing people recount and completely misinterpret his rants all weekend long was annoying. This man just can't win with some of you.
Oh yeah, people bitched that Kanye had them turn the Bonnaroo sign off...
Jack White did too, but you know, no big deal.
Did people at the fest do that or do you mean in this thread? I know someone was asking about it in here but didn't hear any complaints on the farm about it.

They always turn the bonnaroo sign off atop of What Stage during a headliner's show.
And it's also why we get that one guy with the green laser pointer squiggling up at the bonnaroo sign. ( did that happen this year? I was unable to go and do not know first hand, but I expect it)
Plus when it gets turned back on you know the show is over.

Were you a part of the "KICK THEM OUT" chants? I don't know where you two were in the pit line, but up towards the start of the line, there was a huge commotion about 25 minutes before Kanye started. I'm still not sure what happened, honestly.
And I'm surprised no one was hurt, it was like a scene from Altamont when they let the pit line in finally. Damn running of the bulls.

We were in the pit line and really, really close and literally got fucked over because of the rush of people jumping the rail/cutting the line and causing problems. So squished up and right when we got to the pit we were told "Sorry, the pit is full". Then they proceeded to allow tons of VIP, RLAR, and other guests enter the pit while we watched. Then they didn't let people into the pit as others came out.
Really glad I waited for two sets on the side of the stage for nothing. They need a few people to organize that more. It's like the wild west and the usual guy who keeps shit in some kind of order was not there this year. So we had lines splitting in two and also people playing really loose with the definition of a "line". So lame.
What was everyone expecting from Kanye? You knew he was going to go on rants. He does them at every one of his concerts. You knew it was coming and still showed up and then complained about it. Some of you are just ridiculous. Then Jack White the next night goes on stage and gives you basically the same kind of rants and gets praised for it. It's seriously hard to understand some of the point of views of some of the people on this board. I can understand if the music isn't your taste but all the other stuff is truly hard to grasp sometimes. So what if he thinks he is best or biggest rockstar in the world. Why does that make you not like a show or an album? He is not your friend or spouse. You don't have to live with him so why care about he says. He puts out music. Listen and shut up. You will enjoy it more.
Two things. One, I doubt Jack White's rants ate up nearly as much time....especially considering he gave an extended set versus a shortened one. And Jack delivered a helluva setlist in comparison as well.
Two, i like his music and his albums. What you say about his meglomania shouldn't change that? Well it's precisely why I still listen to him, and showed up for his show. I honestly don't give two shits about most of the musicians I care about's personal lives. Personal knowledge of them has very little to do with how their music affects me. Most of the time I can't even name members of a bands names. Doesn't lessen my appreciation of them. Just means that info is mostly irrelevant to me. But to respond to "He puts out music. Listen and shut up"....I'd say "Then play that music. Shut the fuck up and perform". Because you're right...i don't really care what he thinks. So I don't need half the performance wasted with him drilling me with just that. And yes we know he is going to rant...we just hope for it to be minimal. Or I do anyways.
And @foxandhound, you seem dead set on making this a racial issue. any particular reason why? Or just following Kanye's tendency to pull the race card?
To the "play music and shut the fuck up": like I said we all knew he was going to do this and everyone still showed up and I bet most we waiting for it in anticipation. Then they complain about it. There was no way there was not going to be multiple rants. If anyone thought different then they don't have a clue anyway bc it is very well known that he does this. It's like getting in cage with lion knowing it's going to maul you and then complaining once it does.
Not to you chemical just anyone who was mad about how the set went down. Lesson is don't get in the cage if you don't want to get mauled. And that's exactly what happened bc he called out all the haters and all of you got butt hurt bc you know he was talking to you. He said he was going to piss on you and that's what he did . He put on a hell of show and you put money in his pocket and stood out in field for 2 hours and watched him anyway. You all are a joke

I waited with my brother for three hours for the pit line and he ended up getting trampled, smashed into the fence, and excluded from the pit. He watched from very far away by himself for most of it while I got in (wasnt even aware of his misfortune because of the craziness). Thats bullshit IMO. I guess the strong survive in the cruel, unBonnaroolike headliner pit lines, but damn.
BTW I mentioned in another thread I fucked up big time and have no memory of this show post Stronger. I was having so much fun during those first 7 songs or so. He was straight killing it and, I can't speak for the rest of the set obviously, but up to that point any strongly negative opinion of what he was doing is just incorrect if you like Kanye/his music/hip-hop.
I found Jack White to be extremely humble surprisingly and thought his talking, charisma, and showmanship was great. As for Kanye, from what I remember I took it that his whole persona was like he was stepping into his sporting arena and he was there, and he was alpha and dominating that shit and wanted to let us see his passion and what drives him. I could be way off, but I feel like people should lighten up a bit on both of them. The combo of all of our headliners helped put a stamp on an incredible weekend.

Really? His setlist was weak in my opinion with only a handful of songs I truely enjoyed of his being played. I understand kanye rants and I'll be honest in saying I have not followed his live shows whatsoever but have heard how he has been killing it on his yeezus tour. With that being said, this was far far from that. And you know what, I thought the rants were comical in a what the fuck is he doing way, but when it cuts into the music, that's when I got annoyed, go ahead and talk yourself up all you want on stage because you earned that. Just don't go out there and stop three songs to tell us about how your gonna play the Super Bowl, plus what was up with him autotune singing random shit instead of songs? And please tell me someone remembers him forgetting a verse on heartless. Pathetic performance for a headliner imo. But then again that was my first roo so what do I know...

Honestly I may just not be critical enough of a person. Or maybe I just have too much fun for my own good, but, for instance, just being in the pit with my friends rapping and dancing along while he smashed Can't Tell me Nothing would have made my year by itself. Not even close to my favorite Kanye song or anything. Its hard for me to be rational when its fucking Kanye West like 50 feet from me and what not. I remember the rants being too long, but, whatever. He ended up playing more songs that I love than any other act anyways. I guess my standards aren't as high as some of you guys.

He always does the auto-tune singing rant thing. He did the same thing when we saw him on the yeezus tour. It's just what he does. It like if you went to a Black Lips show and the band spit on you. Don't get mad bc they do it all the time. Maybe more people didn't know what they were getting into than I'm giving credit for, but it is a well know fact that he does all of that in his show. After every yeezus show all the news outlets would have some new crazy quote he said the night before. It's pretty hard not to know even if you don't follow him bc everyone was reporting on every single rant.

It's true, no one played more hits over the weekend than Kanye West. More people knew every single Kanye track played than any other artist on the farm and people still complain about the setlist. I didn't even think about that until you said that about yourself. Good point kp
5 people cut in the front of the line during Vampire Weekend, we told security, and while they were talking to those people we started it.
Security came through and kicked them out. Got on the rail in front of Mike D, best show of the week and best of my life, hands down.
I'm pretty sure I was standing right next to those people that jumped in line, only seperated by the guardrail. They told us they won a contest or something. I'm pretty sure I looked directly at you more than once, haha. I think one of their friends, a huge 300lb linebacker or something, jumped in unnoticed when the stampede of people started.

I wasn't there. I feel no need to boo an artist I don't care to see.
That said, I was very curious as to what others thought of his set.
The overall consensus could be summed up as, "Well it was a good show, but....."
The camp friends we made originally had no plans to attend. A few did, who loved Kanye. We had some discussions where I had confessed to them for my dislike of his music, it was dropped and we moved onto other bands.
Well Saturday morning we discussed the show. Who isn't curious.
Most think his shows would be better if he'd shut the frack up and sing. Others didn't like his stopping of songs and restarting them several times.
The die hards said this was just a kanye show. I have the feeling he rants like that every time hes out.
This leaves me with the impression that he has less fans then what he came with for another live show. More die hards for those that loved it. Probably more people listening to his music.
I don't like artists that talk a lot on stage. Jack White and cake both ran their nickel a little, but it was short and generally positive.
Kanye, if you're so good, shouldn't your music speak for itself? Probably have more fans if you just sang more, and talked less.

I'm kind of glad Kanye showed up as the monster many people wanted him to be. I think that's exactly what he wanted. If all he wanted was adoration of the masses, he could have that. We know the guy can make a beat that gets your ass shaking, but instead he releases Yeezus, the angriest and most disturbing major hip-hop release since I don't know when.
When I looked pass the press and started actually digging into Kanye's lyrics, he strikes me as an extremely self-aware artist. He knows how he is perceived, and he plays into that.
So much hip-hop is just fun music to dance to, its house music basically, and there is nothing wrong with that. But with Yeezus, as well as some tracks on MBDTF, Kanye is saying more. It just requires more effort from the listeners to hear it.

I just remembered this. At one point during the show in between songs I thought he was about to play a new song because I didn't recognize the music, and maybe it was in my head but I could have sworn I heard "New Testament" said on stage over and over. Anyone else hear this? For a second I thought that Kanye's New Testament poster might not be bullshit after all

Nice meeting you in the pit by the way Lol if you can remember that.
