Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
This is particularly ignorant because I've been willing to praise plenty of other popular black musicians. We're not making it a race issue, you are. You act like the only possible reason for not liking the guy has to be racism. You couldn't be any more wrong. Come on now, stop with that shit.
No, I fucking haven't. I can't dumb it down anymore for you people, saying "I don't like Kanye" or "I didn't like Kanye's performance" isn't racist. Never claimed it was. Being irrational and hypocritical about your dislike of him while fawning over a white man doing the same sort of things (or worse things in most cases) strikes bystanders as having racial undertones.
In your rush to defend anyone taking the opposite stance I've made you didn't bother reading anything I actually posted. Try doing that, regroup and tell me where I accused you of being racist. Quotes will be required, and please do a better job than the mouth breather from Cleveland.
LULZ @ mouth breather. Again, resorting to insults rather than actual debate. Aren't you the guy who got banned for calling a girl a c***? Super classy, fella.
If that is truly what you meant, why address it at all in a context of people who simply were complaining about the show?

You're right I haven't read all of it and I don't plan to. I pretty much only read the board by recent posts now. I saw what you said and the race card is something you tend to go to a lot whenever people say negative things about any person that is black. I hadn't even posted in the thread, but I'm telling you, just quit that shit. Kanye being black is not the reason anyone here doesn't like him. There are plenty of other valid reasons for not liking him.

For example, the guy earlier in this thread who wishes Kanye was more "Well-spoken" like Lionel Richie? I'm pretty sure someone actually used the word "uppity" on here. Give me a break...
Kanye was the best set of the weekend. SO much passion and energy!!!! I was in front of the soundboard to the left, and I only heard one girl ranting about how Kanye should take care of his kid (???) I told her to take it easy and pipe down, and she kept right on moving. Everyone else was jumping around and having the time of their life, including myself. This was the first time I have seen Kanye, but I knew a rant was coming, and I didn't mind it at all. "If you're a fan of me, you're a fan of your mother-f**king self!"
Jack White was boring to me, and he ranted between every song (so did Cake). However, they are white (like myself) and play a guitar, so they get a pass with the 'normal' Bonnaroo attendees

But you know what? All this shit about whether Kanye haters are or are-not racist is entirely beside the point.
Over the past several years, Bonnaroo was building a reputation for being welcoming of any great artist from any genre. Alice Cooper, R Kelly, Adele, jazz legends, bubu music, everything. Yet when Bonnaroo books someone who is widely considered to be the best in his genre (and even if you disagree, you have to concede that this is an opinion held by MANY), Kanye is not accepted. He's heckled, people spray paint fuck Kanye on portos, and chant fuck Kanye around Centeroo. That should be totally unacceptable for Bonnaroo fans. Diverse lineups and diverse audiences are what Bonnaroo is all about, and being appreciative of those lineups is what Bonnaroo fans are supposed to be about. But now we've found someone who, despite being acclaimed and accomplished, isn't welcome at Bonnaroo, and that's shameful.

I really regret having expressed my instinctive reaction to the show. It was bad vibes. I hate that it contributed to the thread falling down this ridiculous rabbit hole. Again, I maintain that none of this is all that important in the grand scheme, and so not worth getting into a mudflinging conversation about who is racist and who is righteous and who is an idiot and who is brilliant. If you liked it, you liked it.

One thing is certain: Kanye wins Bonnaroo. Never have I seen so much debate, so much time spent on one single artist, his music, his performance, his personal life. If an artist can provoke this much emotion, he must be doing something right. All your love, all your hate, all the provocation in the world. It's a race issue, a question of what we think a good performer should and shouldn't be (should a mega star really be humble? has his ego just shattered through so many arbitrary rules we establish for acceptable behavior?), a class issue (some surely have to be jealous that Kanye's "life is dope and I do dope shit"), a battle of the lovers and the haters (it's cool to hate, it's cool to idolize). Such a radically polarizing figure, but really isn't so much of Kanye getting blacked out here by these extremes? "Who is he really?" is what I wonder as I have read through all of these intense reactions here and throughout Kanye's entire career and the world's reaction to him.
I'm starting to see what a touchstone he's become for the gray murky areas of American pop culture, the place where cultural values, especially antiquated ones, collide with pop star fandom and consumerism. Kanye himself seems to be in constant duality: rallying against the very things that make him. Consumerism/slavery to a predominately white capitalistic structure. Adored musician and entertainer/monster to the masses. Even Kanye's baby-faced, fashionable appearance is in constant contradiction to his sometimes wild, aggressive hyper-masculinity. Is he the master of provocation by playing into so many extremes? What do our reactions, both the positive and the negative, to him say about ourselves?
I have spent so much time thinking about these arguments and who Kanye really could be and what does he and his art truly represent, so I guess Kanye wins. Well-behaved people rarely make history, right? His acclaim as a musician is warranted and understood, that's not what mystifies me. Our fascination with Kanye does.
But you know what? All this shit about whether Kanye haters are or are-not racist is entirely beside the point.

Well it's easy to justify, right?
Because haters can just turn the argument back around on Kanye, saying he's the reason he shouldn't be welcome. He's ignorant or egotistical or whatever. Radiate Positivity is lovingly thrown out the window in favor of individual prejudices (racial or otherwise). It doesn't happen with smaller rappers, even the ones who say far more terrible things in their music i.e. Danny Brown, Asap Ferg, etc., because the public, even the Bonnaroo public, can just tune them out.
But the beautiful thing about Kanye is that if you're a music fan, you can't tune that man out entirely. If you're on music websites, he's there. If you watch cable, he's there. And people that hate Kanye doubly hate that they can't escape him.
So in a way, the Bonnaroo set was pretty much the ultimate petri-dish of Kanye and Kanye love and Kanye hate all in the same place. And Kanye was willing to show up and take part. He showed up in a place where he knows some people hate him, just to make them deal with him. Sure, he did it for the fans too. But he knew both sides, as evidenced by his speeches during the show.
I think it's amazing. And it's something that will be argued about straight through to next Bonnaroo. And this just further perpetuates the cycle. Kanye was my favorite artist playing Bonnaroo, but his show wasn't my favorite. Largely because I had a terrible spot. Still, I have great admiration for his ability to stand up at his critics and not get beaten down by what other people say. Basically, people will stop talking about Kanye only when he lets them. How many artists can you say that about? I love it.

He's just that much of a polarizing figure. People have very strong opinions about him either way. To be honest he probably wants it that way. All of the negativity after the first show helped get him a second shot at it. All of the negativity keeps people talking about him constantly. So in addition to all of his fans that love him and praise him and believe he can do no wrong and defend him at every turn, he also has all of the haters to keep him going. He'll probably never be back at Roo but does he need to be? It's always going to be the same.

All the Kanye fans really want is some admission that this man is a titan in music in general, never mind rap and hip hop, and that the ability to be as polarizing a figure as he while still having the courage to directly face the hate is something of a rarity these days. You don't have to like his music. You can fucking hate his music for all we care. It would just be nice for people to admit at least he has the conversation going. I didn't attend Jack White. That doesn't mean I hope everyone there had a shitty Bonnaroo. In fact, I hope the exact opposite. Good for fucking you if you loved Jack White, just like good for fucking us that enjoyed Kanye.

No matter what anyone says, I don't think hating Kanye is justified in any way. He's a stranger to all of us here, and we have no right or reason to hate him.
Again, resorting to insults rather than actual debate. Aren't you the guy who got banned for calling a girl a c***? Super classy, fella.
HAHA. He did call me that.
Yes, he was suspended but NO HE WAS NOT SUSPENDED SIMPLY FOR CALLING A GIRL THAT.
Don't know how many times it can be said before people start to understand that it was more complex than using one word. That should be clear by the amount of people who also used the word around that time and faced no punishment.
I didn't twist your words at all. Direct quote. The earlier portion you posted does not clarify the fact that you said that those who "beat him down" (i.e., bitch about his show as I have) clearly have racist motivations.

So, you admit to not having bothered to read the actual posts we're referring to and would rather falsely accuse me of crying wolf about racism anytime anyone is says mean things about a black person in order to dismiss my point entirely? Great stuff, Sang.
HEY GUYS, RACISM'S DEAD! WE WON! SANG JUST TOLD ME AND HE'S USUALLY RIGHT ABOUT THINGS SO....I GUESS WE CAN ALL GO HOME NOW. Yeah..nope.
Do you think my defense of Jack White's rant at Bonnaroo vs. my criticism of Kanye's rant at Bonnaroo has racial undertones?
No, because you explained yourself coherently. I disagree that they're conflicting messages entirely (and I took your liking my post about the underlying message of the two rants to mean you somewhat agree with that statement). People acting like they are polar opposites, one being the innocent mutterings of a quiet genius, the other the obnoxious ramblings of a madman, are the people I question. They are both shades of grey, unless I completely misread it and you were just liking my post to pull an "LOL Ironic Sang" type of funny.
I left Jack White due to it being absolutely horrid, but I'm not going to spend my time in the Jack White thread trying to convince people they shouldn't have enjoyed it.
I caught Jack the week before at Gov Ball and skipped out on his Roo set. What was horrid about the show? It's Jack going onstage and shredding his guitar for 90 or so minutes, I'd assume, so what were you expecting?
But you know what? All this shit about whether Kanye haters are or are-not racist is entirely beside the point.

I don't understand what is shameful about it. That is a reaction and reception that was earned as a result of his performances & behavior. Fair and square. It's not about the genre because many other rappers have performed at Bonnaroo and had a great reception. Likewise, other critically acclaimed acts have performed there to lukewarm or negative reactions and it's either attributed to a poor performance or a difference of opinion. Why is it always a blame game when it comes to Kanye?

Because people made up their mind about booing and heckling him before he set foot on the stage.
Nah, I agree that the vast majority of what Kanye said was positive (or at least an attempt to be). But I can understand how some people were put off by the negative/arrogant things he said -- dissing Bruno Mars, calling himself the biggest rock star on the planet, taking shots at Bonnaroo patrons (even if they deserve it). Conversely, I don't understand what people's beef was with Jack White's rant at Roo. He didn't seem to say anything negative or arrogant to me.
Regardless, the real culprits were the d-bags who were booing and chanting gay fish. I hope they suffer some severe and irreparable injury to their reproductive organs.

It's shameful because he put on a fine performance, and he hasa much, much better recent catalog than Jay Z or Eminem. Jay just gets a pass because he conforms to rap stereotypes, and Em gets a pass because he's white. Ye's a born provocateur, and I guess he doesn't. And people don't like him because of what he is.
You don't have to like every headliner. I don't like Mumford or Kings of Leon because of what they are - boring rock bands. I don't like Widespread for what they are - a b-grade jam band. But I don't hate on them all festival long, and I don't show up in their threads after wards to talk shit. That's just rude.

See, I truly don't understand how people can look at him talking about being the biggest rockstar on the planet as him being negative. He's cocky and thinks very highly of himself, which I think we've already established is a common trait in modern music's most memorable front men (talking 60's and later). And, to be fair, there's few who can make a case as strong as his, given his critical and fan acclaim, status as one of the best performers alive and so on.
And I think he took it easy on the cretins who were anti-Kanye and pulling that shit, fwiw.
Regarding JW, I think people are misunderstanding the point being made. The people in this thread saying "JW's rants blahblahblah" (me included) aren't anti-JW. In fact, most of us like the guy quite a bit. It's the idea that he's somehow a better person or more humble or whatever buzz term you want to go with and then people are referencing those rants. It's just maddening to sit here while people look at two fairly similar situations and go "well...clearly they're worlds apart."
I like JW and I like Kanye. They're both kind of nuts, kind of dicks, brilliant musicians and are known to rub plenty of people the wrong way. But even JW detractors can man up and say the guy is talented, I truly think that part of the reason that Kanye is dealt a far different hand is his skin color. I may be over-analyzing and building a case where one doesn't exist, but it's not like there's no precedent for this type of behavior from the general public.

Did you get teased a lot in grade school? Did people often poke you with things, just to make you freak out? God, you are a baby and take yourself and your opinions way, way too seriously.
Also,(and this is admittedly a tangential remark, but) anyone who uses the C-word has positively zero moral high ground to lecture others about people having veiled racist motivations for hating Kanye, if you want to get to the nitty gritty. Chauvinism and degrading words about women (no matter how you want to justify your casual usage of them) suck too.

Again, resorting to insults rather than actual debate.

That it? Is this the death rattle of your commentary in this thread?

Please. Calling a woman making racial stereotypes the c-word is not a crime against humanity. In other parts of the Western World, people don't give a single fuck about that word. I'm not a misogynist, I don't hate women, I hated a particular woman at a particular moment for posting a particularly ignorant statement. But then again, you've never let the facts get in the way of whatever it is you're all about.
Are you going to talk about Kanye West, #1 Rockstar in the world? No? Then please fuck right off.
