Dude. Nothing you can say will change my perception of the show. And it's not that I'm brainwashed or whatever dumb shit you'll try to spew out next. It's that one of my favorite performers put on a fantastic show on one of my favorite stages. Quit trying to convince us otherwise. You didn't like it? We get that. Now go on ahead and find your way out of the thread. Your input is no longer needed here. Thanks
Just pointing out the hypocrisy of telling people they don't know what the fuck was up, and weren't paying attention. Glad you enjoyed the show.
For the record, I told my friends that, regardless, those people down front looked like they were loving this shit. And that opinions would be widely divided. I was right.
Has him saying Pearl Jam went 3hrs late been discussed yet?
I wasn't there in 2008 but isn't that false?
I think that was just a flub. They definitely didn't play 3 hours late but they played for about 3 hours. So I think he meant to say "Pearl Jam played late...they went 3 hours long" as opposed to the 2 hours that they were originally scheduled for.
Are you sure it wasn't a horrible lie and therefore everyone should hate Kanye?

Delicious Meatball Sub. You really are the worst. You hate it when someone points out you're full of shit don't you? Despite the fact that you're so quick to tell others the same. I'm done. Have fun.

But for shits and giggles...I've yet to see one of the Kanye worshippers address the fact that Kanye stated that "Fuck Kanye" was painted on the portos before he even got there in 2008. And we all know damn well this is just straight up bullshit.
This bothers me and I'll tell you why.
Even before Kanye played, people didn't want him there. Out of every artist on the bill, he was the one that got the shit end of the stick. It was everywhere that he shouldn't be playing and that he wasn't Bonnaroo material. Then that (the incident) happened and while people were all up in arms in a "SEE WE TOLD YOU" moment, Robert Randolph decided he needed to be involved and began chanting. While "FUCK KANYE" wasn't on the portos before he got there, the emotion was. It was there months before he ever played.
I'm betting that's more of what he was meaning than in a literal sense.

I'm sure "Fuck Kanye" was written on stuff before he got there. There's always been a weird vibe against bands that weren't good enough for Roo or "didn't belong". I remember weird stuff about Radiohead in 2006, Tool in 2007, Metallica and Kanye in 2008, etc.. Kanye wasn't liked back then for similar reasons that some people dislike him now....his attitude and ego. But I definitely believe there was hatred towards Kanye (and a few other acts) in 2008 before he got there.

I definitely remember Metallica hate in 08. Probably because I can't stand them personally. But I used that time to drink at my tent and, if I remember correctly, tie down the camp before the storm.
I could have cared less about Metallica. It did bring the greatest neighbors ever that year though. They all hung at camp and drank Natty Light while rocking Master Of Puppets on a boom box. I miss them so.
Kanye told us to quack ourselves and didn't even play a full song, and anyone that was not in the pit and far in the back either heckled the performance the whole time or left.

I keep thinkin about these lines:
"Bow in the presence of greatness cuz right now that has forsaken us You should feel honored by my lateness that I would even show up to this fake shit so go ahead, go nuts, go apeshit"
Every line is just so on point with that entire set at Bonnaroo. Let's start with the fake shit. It seems like the people most into the whole 'Bonnaroo good vibes' shit can't handle it when someone shows up at Bonnaroo who is real. Who isn't a hip hop cliche (JZ), a worn-out old star (Elton), or a band that uses 'roots' as an excuse to make tired, trite music about their hearts and uses acoustic guitars as a symbol of authenticity (Mumford, Avetts). Who tells a President off on live TV. Who says some blunt but true shit in his set, and who talks about himself like he's the greatest musician out right now.
You know what? He fucking is. Give me another artist who's made anything comparable to Kanye in the past ten years and we can talk. Someone who's dropped seven, incredible groundbreaking albums in the past ten years. The worst of those is 808s, and that's arguably the most influential -- who would of guessed in 2008 how much of the radio would sound like that album just a couple years later?
Let's talk influence. What would hip hop even sound like if it weren't for Kanye? What the fuck would music sound like? Would people give a shit about Skrillex or Daft Punk if Kanye hadn't brought electronic music to the masses in 2007? Would people give a shit about Bon Iver anymore if him and Kanye weren't pushing musical boundaries together? Would people give a shit about Drake or Gambino or Chance or every other rapper that's followed in Kanye's wake? Would we be seeing Kanye-style rants in other rappers sets, like Jay-Z, Drake and others have been doing? There aren't answers to these questions. We have Kanye, and these days, music sounds like him. A watered-down, crowd-friendly version, sure, but there it is.
So there's the fuckin greatness. And hey! I was honored that he showed up. Someone's got to bring the party. He had more bodies moving than any other headliner that weekend. Let's not bullshit around. I love Elton, but there were a lot more singalong ballads than party music. That's fine. And I love Jack White, but he leaned on a lot of his slow-to-midtempo material, with the exception of Hotel Yorba. Honestly, I was a little disappointed in that -- I could've done with more fast songs to jump around to. Whatever. It was still a great set.
But there we were, tens of thousands of us filling up that field. Hopping around. Going nuts. Going apeshit.
And yeah, fuck the haters. Who gives a shit? They can bitch all they want, but any case I've seen them make comes down to nitpicking (Pearl Jam didn't go three hours over, they went late and played three hours) or exaggerating wildly (Kanye came on 30 minutes late, left 15 minutes early, and ranted for 20 minutes during Runaway).
The reason people bring up race is because the reasons people give for not liking his set are bullshit reasons like these. I don't think it's (chiefly) race, I think some people just dislike his attitude and his music. Which is fine. Go turn on some Mumford and Sons and jam out. Go apeshit. Or whatever it is Mumford fans do when they listen to Mumford and Sons. Rub your heart or dick or something. I don't know.

Y'all may have already covered this, but is there any validity to an argument that Mr. West deliberately made the show less-than-enjoyable for those at the fringes? It seems like there were two different shows depending on how close you got to the stage.
Side screens not in use, way low sound, center screen in use not showing (clearly) the action on stage for those further away. Is it that far of a stretch to imagine Mr. West wanting to give a great show for those up front who sacrificed time, comfort, or both to see him perform - while simultaneously giving the finger to those in the back that he figured would be hating, or just flat out didn't care enough about Yeezus to make an effort?
For whatever the reason, the specifics of that show have accomplished one thing that every performer seeks - and this is a facet of the music business Mr. West has perfected - we are all still talking about it (and him) nearly a week later...with no end in sight. Brilliant, in my opinion.

"As soon as they like you, make 'em unlike you"
Pretty sure he did the same thing at X Games last week. It's an artistic choice, it happens. Bjork didn't use the side screens last year. Radiohead had them on, but they didn't really show the band.

And at the time, that's basically what I thought. The no video is probably a bit true of this, but now looking back and hearing loads of stories about sound issues over the weekend, I blame bonnaroo. I would have had zero issue with no video had I been able to hear clearly.

Edit: talking about video boards
Small correction. Bjork used the side screens similarly to the Radiohead(and Tool) did. They were on, but showing videos, not live action. Didn't Kanye have the side screens on for "New Slaves"? It looked that way from the video I have seen.

I remember seeing them flashing red during the "Black Skinhead" intro but that was just from videos I watched afterwards but that's it.
Can I say how much it really bummed me out to hear so many people find so much joy in calling Kanye a gay fish? I mean this from a totally personal perspective as a gay man and not from an I-love-Kanye perspective. It really sucked and trying to explain to the people saying it why it was offensive was not doing me or my croo any favors.
1. The joke isn't funny. That episode of South Park really isn't that funny either. 2. You were not original or cool. 3. Maybe just shut the fuck up? 4. If that totem was yours, congrats. Your totem has been posted everywhere to represent how terrible some of the Bonnaroo attendees were this year. You are the physical representation of terrible.

As an ally and friend, this really frustrated me as well. I really wish Bonnaroo would denounce it, or that they could have confiscated all the Gay Fish totems and signs I saw.
It's repugnant, ignorant, and gives everyone involved a bad reputation.

A big problem with the "gay fish" joke is that on South Park the punchline isn't that he's "gay" but that he's so involved with himself he just doesn't get the joke. He doesn't understand why people think he is a gay fish and just seems lost on a simple topic. But people have taken that episode and felt like it's saying "It's okay to call Kanye a gay fish because he's bad" when that's not even what the joke of the episode was close to being about. The south park episode shows that little 9 year old kids find the joke funny. It's a corny joke but when you have 26 year old dummies saying it like they were it just feels more offensive.

This really was the worst crowd I've experienced. I even saw my first fight - between two girls in my neighboring camp.
Is it that Bonnaroo/festivals have grown so much that we're getting a new brand of awful people? Or maybe it's just always been this way and I hadn't noticed?
I blame the millennials
