Considering references to that song stretch the whole album, I don't find this argument particularly persuasive. Not when the New York Times said it, and not now that you're repeating it as your own.
I just find it hilarious that the racial problem he's commenting on in the song is precisely what you're criticizing him for "if you like Bentleys, you're a fool."
No what I meant, was that if you are commenting on the problem of stereotypes, then fulfilling those stereotypes I have trouble getting your message. There is nothing wrong with liking Bentleys, there is something wrong with liking them because you should. Just like there is nothing wrong with having sex with married women in the Hamptons (I mean who has not done this) but there is with doing it for revenge on Whitey. If Kanye could ever get a coherent message across I would certainly respect his lyrical abilities a lot more.
That being said the only way I would want to see him at Bonnaroo is with Watch the Throne II, after listening to the albums and seeing all the reviews I wish I could have caught that live show.
But the Hampton line is precisely the point. He spends the whole song talking about what he sees as the current state of racial repression in America, with the climax of the song being the Hampton lines, Kanye essentially saying "I'll be that monster you people think I am." The ludicrousness of the actual lyric highlights the absurdity of the perceived fear of a black man sleeping with a white man's life.
Look dude, if you don't like Kanye that's fine, lots of people don't like him. But don't pretend it's because you have some enlightened understanding of his lyrical content.

You have the reading comprehension skills of a bulldozer.

Did I say I was enlightened? I thought this was a thread to discuss him and his music. I don't really understand why at the very least well thought out criticism is something you that people can not take. You think him saying these things adds to his apparent message and I think they detract from it. There is no reason to start throwing around crap instead of having what I thought was a decent discussion about his lyrics.

You have the reading comprehension skills of a bulldozer.
And you have the social skills of a rabid badger, so I am not going to take this personally.

Well you should, since it was meant as such.
If you scrolled through my recent posts, you'll notice that I've been overwhelming cordial and respectful to everyone I've interacted with (except for the obvious trolls).
I'm not going to take time out of these good folks' day to brag about myself, but suffice it to say my social skills in the public view are outstanding. I'm rented out to teams in my company because I'm an exceptional shmoozer and I routinely get my company new work with new clients. But you also confuse my taking issue with your very obvious troll attempt with how I interact with people who are respectful and inquisitive.
If you had a legitimate talking point and wanted to discuss Kanye's lyrics, we could have done that. But you know full well that the way you went about discussing it was instigatory and petty. But what do you care? Mission accomplished, right?

I agree that you have been cordial and respectful...but you gotta admit, there is an attitude on these boards a lot of times that Kanye is great, and if you disagree then you are just plain wrong or simply have bad taste in music.
I mean as a collective, not just singling you out.
I love Kanye musically. I saw him open for U2 right before Graduation came out and loved every second of it. Missed 'Roo '08 but would love for him to come back.
But it seems to just be one of the many universal truths on inforoo that you just shouldnt argue with..."Kanye is a p*ick but hes a musical genius, Mumford, DMB, RHCP, 90% of EDM, etc. suck and if you disagree you have terrible taste."
I dont agree or disagree with all of it, but I do think it hinders a lot of possible intelligent conversation and debate around here.

(But ya, Yeezus is pretty dope)
I don't think it's a "dare to dislike Kanye" thing, but people's reasons are often so shallow and superficial it gets pretty frustrating.

It's also pretty universally accepted on here that, say, Radiohead or The Beatles or Pink Floyd are geniuses. But for some reason, some people on here feel particularly threatened when we hold Kanye West up to that status, as a musical genius that should be universally enjoyed. Pray tell, what's the difference between Kanye West and those other artists?

Time. Even Radiohead is 16 years past the first time they got thrown into the musical genius conversation with OK Computer. College Dropout has only been out for 9.

Somehow I just knew this thread wasn't going to be civil.
I don't give a fuck about Kanye but he obviously would be a big headliner and I would enjoy a nice dinner and a few hours off my feet getting ready for a nice latenight while he is on.

Yeezus had the board at a fever pitch and it spilled out everywhere. Guilty as charged. But since the initial "OMG YEEZUS" outburst, we've kept our fawning to the appropriate threads, I think.

I'm not saying there aren't detractors of those other artists. I'm just wondering aloud why people are so much more vitriolic when it comes to Kanye.

In addition to time, none of the three that you mentioned are as abrasive as Kanye.

Time and the fact that he played a show at Bonnaroo that was received just about as bad as a show at Roo can be. I would imagine that taints some people's opinions on here. I think the dude's a genius but I'm more of a Jay-Z guy myself.

I understand what youre saying, and I do think Ye's music will hold up similar to those bands in time...
but I guess it comes down to time and personality.
The beatles had a super long reign and their music has proven to stand the test of time and be impactful to different generations of music fans. Plus John Lennon was killed young in life and that almost always gives an artist 'folk-hero' status. And Paul is still rocking and blowing fans minds at his age.
Im not a huge Radiohead fan so I never fully understood their 'untouchable status' but I can tell they are pretty creative and talented. And they evolve with each album somewhat.
But ya, personality is a big part of it. Some people just cant (or wont) separate Kanye's ego/personality/celebrity from his music.

The internet age and the fact that he's kiiiiind of an *sshole. Every transgression of Kanye's is overblown to the 10,000th degree, every transgression from the guys from those eras are swept under the rug.
I mean seriously, I'm one of the biggest Beatles fans on this board. But if those guys pulled the same act now that they did back then? Forget about it. The tabloids would be all "ZOMG They smoked pot!" and then when Lucy came out all hell would have broken loose ("That song is about...what? LSD!? W-W-W-WAAAT!?")
It's the curse of being part of this generation (and I assume any generation that follows it). People glorify a guy like Morrisey for being a head case and a d*ck, but Kanye isn't seen as a genius, he's seen as a malcontent, a white-person-hating insane rap artist from the streets instead of what he is: someone who grew up in a middle-class Chicago suburb whose mother had a doctorate in English and taught at Chicago University and whose father was a photojournalist in Atlanta.
But don't tell Jess that, he still thinks he's all about the gunz, hoez and streetz, yo.
At the end of the day no one can argue Kanye is a marketing genius. He is a very polarizing figure that everyone has a strong opinion on one way or another. He is never far from the public spotlight.
I'm looking forward to his cameo in the new Anchorman movie more.
Meh, can't compare to the anticipation of Harrison Ford doing slapstick in that movie. "It was bizarre. They weren't all in the scene I did. It was just what's his name and the applesauce girl."
