There's a rough list. Keep in mind this isn't my 20 favorites, just a better objective 'Best of Kanye' list. My favorite list would have waaaaaaay Guilt Trip & We Major. Anyway I still want everyone (read: mostly Juggs & Flanz) to do their lists.
Ooh, this looks fun. EDIT-- Couldn't rank them after the first two. Here are my top 20 though
Can't Tell Me Nothing Diamonds from Sierra Leone Devil in a New Dress Through the Wire On Sight Jesus Walks All of the Lights Heard Em Say All Falls Down POWER Gold Digger We Don't Care Late Blame Game We Major Homecoming Hey Mama Slow Jamz We Major
I'm not saying there aren't detractors of those other artists. I'm just wondering aloud why people are so much more vitriolic when it comes to Kanye.
The internet age and the fact that he's kiiiiind of an *sshole. Every transgression of Kanye's is overblown to the 10,000th degree, every transgression from the guys from those eras are swept under the rug.
I mean seriously, I'm one of the biggest Beatles fans on this board. But if those guys pulled the same act now that they did back then? Forget about it. The tabloids would be all "ZOMG They smoked pot!" and then when Lucy came out all hell would have broken loose ("That song is about...what? LSD!? W-W-W-WAAAT!?")
It's the curse of being part of this generation (and I assume any generation that follows it). People glorify a guy like Morrisey for being a head case and a d*ck, but Kanye isn't seen as a genius, he's seen as a malcontent, a white-person-hating insane rap artist from the streets instead of what he is: someone who grew up in a middle-class Chicago suburb whose mother had a doctorate in English and taught at Chicago University and whose father was a photojournalist in Atlanta.
But don't tell Jess that, he still thinks he's all about the gunz, hoez and streetz, yo.
I think his music is more about misogyny, and faux intellectualism really. Talk about people with no reading skills and then you post this lol.
At the end of the day no one can argue Kanye is a marketing genius. He is a very polarizing figure that everyone has a strong opinion on one way or another. He is never far from the public spotlight.
It's also pretty universally accepted on here that, say, Radiohead or The Beatles or Pink Floyd are geniuses. But for some reason, some people on here feel particularly threatened when we hold Kanye West up to that status, as a musical genius that should be universally enjoyed. Pray tell, what's the difference between Kanye West and those other artists?
I'm just saying.
I do not even agree on the Radiohead analogy here. I like about half their catalog, but they put out some seriously unlistenable crap as well. Floyd has one not great album, and one nostalgia album, and everything by the Beatles was great IMO. By contrast even their fans will admit both Yeezus and Radiohead have put out some pretty terrible material already and both should have years left on their careers. There are not many bands to be counted up with Floyd/Beatles, and 'Ye does not come close in my opinion.

The only people that would consider themselves fans of Kanye/Radiohead and also admit they have some "terrible" material are fans who don't like it when their favorite artists change sound/direction.

I love Kanye, but I think he has some pretty crappy stuff out there. I wouldn't go so far as to say terrible. You can't expect to like everything though.

Yeah as a fan of both I don't consider any of their material "terrible". Not by a longshot.

Jess, the irony of you accusing someone else of "faux intellectualism" is staggering. I mean, holy f*cking christ. You are, without a doubt, the least self-aware human being I've ever encountered on the internet or otherwise.

This must be why they call you cordial, you are a really hard person to have a conversation with considering all you do is insult others over their opinions.

"Well I'm convinced the whole day long That all I learn is always wrong and things are true that I forget But no one taught that to me yet"
"Welcome this is our farmhouse. We have cluster flies alas, And this time of year is bad.
We are so very sorry, There is little we can do, but swat them."
Prophound. I don't think Radiohead has released one album (other than Pablo Honey) that is lower than an 8 out of 10. You need to listen closer.

That is not really the point, the conversation was about people who were universally loved and accepted as musical genius's neither of these artists are, and they are not close to being in the category of a Beatles/Floyd level of admiration.

I said I was cordial and respectful to non-trolls. You clearly don't fall into that category.
Stop lumping my interactions with you in with my interactions with others, if you'd be so kind. I very clearly dislike you and feel you antagonize and instigate me (for what reason I genuinely couldn't begin to tell you). You're a self-appointed authority on everything who doesn't have a single expertise.
Are you still holding strong on the statement that your original comment in this thread today was a compliment?

8 out of 10 on what scale? Your own personal one? Or are you talking reviews in magazines and on websites? Just wasn't sure what you meant here.
I never went all that crazy for Radiohead and have personally enjoyed Phish more than them but I'm not going to claim Radiohead has terrible material or that Phish is a good barometer for "genius music". I know not everything is completely subjective (Beatles > Creed) but sometimes I find it funny that people get so into the arguments that they basically say "No.....I know what is good music and you don't know what is good music." It happens a lot on the internet but still always makes me chuckle a bit. Anyway.....back to the scheduled argument

we all like stuff other people don't like. that's part of what makes bonnaroo so great is having acts from many different genres there bringing disparate groups of people together. just cuz I like something doesn't mean you will like it. I don't care for kanye. that doesn't mean the opinions of people who do are any less valid.

But FWIW, all but two of their albums since Pablo Honey have received at least 4/5 stars on AllMusic (Amnesiac and The King of Limbs got 3.5) and none have received less than a 7.9 on Pitchfork (with King of Limbs being the only one under an 8.5 with a 7.9). Not claiming those publications are the authority, but they're certainly two of the most reputed/well-known music review publications going right now, and it's at least worth noting.

Just curious....what makes them more reputable than other publications? Honest question because I never check either of them for reviews but I do know that people always make jokes on here about Pitchfork and their ratings. The only time I tend to read reviews are when I'm on taking a bathroom break and grab Rolling Stone or Relix and even then I'm usually reading the reviews of the albums I've already heard so I can compare the reviewers thoughts to my own. Most of the new music I get into comes from talking to folks on here and in real life.

I never read reviews but just from personal experience everyone who was with me at Radiohead in 06 thought it was in the top three concerts ever, and we all thought the 09 show was not to our tastes. FWIW I think OK Computer-HTTT were really solid albums, but the rest of the catalog is not really to my tastes.

Pitchfork is one of, if not the, most widely read online music publication on the internet. That's why so many people make fun of it, because it is successful and known for touting lesser-known music. AllMusic is just one of the most well-known reference guides for music reviews.

The only reputable source for a good honest review is your own ears. Sometimes i feel like Pitchfork has their mind made up even before the album comes out. They over-hype some acts so badly that they couldn't possibly backtrack and give the album a bad review.

The 2006 show contained almost all of the songs from In Rainbows, which came out after HTTT. And the only album (other than Pablo Honey) before OK Computer was The Bends. So you're saying the only album you don't like is The Bends?

No it was what people who are rational like to call sarcasm, I do not really "like" to antagonize you, but it is like the tea partiers who will vote against anything that might benefit Obama you just tend to go full on crazy when I say anything and admittedly I do get a chuckle out of your overreactions. Also I just give my personal opinions on subjects I think you would be hard pressed to find me declaring myself an "authority" on rap, but it is easy to find that I do have opinions.
So lets say this either you stop with your infantile insults and try to have a conversation or just ignore me figuratively or literally, either way I bet it will cause you less angst.

Ahhhh, that makes sense. I was trying to put into words how I felt some of the jokes directed at Pitchfork were but couldn't really come up with any. Touting lesser-known music does fall in line with some of the things I remember reading people say. Thanks for the info.

For clarification here is the setlist
1. there there 2. 2+2=5 3. 15 step 4. arpeggi 5. exit music 6. kid a 7. dollars & cents 8. videotape 9. no surprises 10. paranoid arndroid 11. the gloaming 12. national anthem 13. climbing up the walls 14. big idea 15. street spirit 16. the bends 17. myxomytosis 18. how to disappear completely
encore 1 1. you and whose army 2. pyramid song 3. spinning plates 4. fake plastic trees 5. body snatchers 6. lucky 7. idioteque 8. karma police
encore 2 1. house of cards 2. everything in it’s right place
This was before In Rainbows came out, and I never liked the album but it was not just In Rainbows (the tunes were great live though). I never cared for The Bends, Pablo Honey, In Rainbows, or King of Limbs. Which is half of what they have done. I would still love to see them if they toured with a "greatest hits" format that accommodated all the albums, but in their current incarnation I would not really be interested in seeing a show.
