my daughter recently pointed out an article about a letter Peter Capaldi wrote to the newspaper about Doctor Who as a kid... turns out he was a superfan from childhood. it will be interesting to see how it informs his performance.
loved the xmas episode. had to watch it twice to get all the references etc. i also think it happened rather quickly but it was more that it happened and then BAM credits.
i hope they don't try and have him be romantic with clara. so weird since he's old now.
I started series 5 last night.....I'm not adjusting well at all.
You will! I really did not like Matt Smith at first, but after a few episodes, I realized he is a perfect Doctor. I personally like him better than David Tennant in the part. Flame away!!
As far as starting on your journey with The Doctor, people have a variety of opinions as to which episode should be your first. Personally, I like to tell people to start with the new Who versus the classics, simply because that's what I know best. I have seen some of the classics but it naturally has a different feel so I can't get into them as much.
With that said, starting with Series 1 (they used Series instead of Season to differentiate between new Who and classic Who), Episode 1 will be your best bet in following the story. Plus, it does a great job of introducing The Doctor. Be forewarned, the episode is extremely cheesy (IMO), and probably won't necessarily "grab" you. Keep watching, though, it gets so, SO much better.
Typically, for my friends, once they got to Series 1, Episode 9/10 - The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances (two-parter), they were hooked.
If you have Netflix, you can breeze through them on there up til Series 6. Hopefully they'll have 7 up there soon.
So I've been watching Miracle Day and I really don't think it's that awful...... Why does everyone say it's so bad?
By the way, the thing at the Science center looks awesome!!
Meant to comment on this a long, long time ago LOL
Comparatively, Miracle Day didn't have the same umph for me that the British Torchwood had. It didn't quite have me on the edge of my seat. Especially after Children of Earth.

Also, I'd like to apologize, on behalf of Doctor Who writers (though I have zero affiliation) for Aliens of London & World War Three.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go on an overnight drunk, and in 10 days I'm going to set out to find the shark that ate my friend and destroy it. Anyone who wants to tag along is more than welcome.
Have you guys seen "In The Loop"? I don't think Capaldi's Doctor will be anything alike his Malcolm Tucker, but I loved his acting. Also he apparently won an Oscar for writing a short film.
I've not. I actually know nothing about Capaldi. I kind of like it that way... then I'll know him first and foremost as The Doctor and anything else will be secondary.
Yeah that's also good, I knew nothing about Tennant or Smith, and they were great that way. However if you have Netflix and don't mind your future Doctor cursing a lot, I definitely recommend it, such a funny movie, I love British wit.
Also my browser is telling me the word movie is misspelled and it doesn't look like a real word any more.
I'm with most of you here; wasn't that big a fan of Matt Smith at first but I came to love him. I definitely fall into the David Tennant fan club. I didn't think I'd come to love this show as much as I do but crazier things have happened. My gf and I are almost done with series 7 and we're hoping that River Song shows up again and seeing as Matt Smith's doctor is no more after this season is over that his wife will pop up again. I'm excited to finally have an older doctor in the mix; I think it'll bring a breath of fresh air to the series.
hey dejavu35, might want to spoiler tag that bit about RS and the Doctor? dunno if it matters, since I'm assuming most people reading this thread have watched that far into the series but just in case... also,
I don't think we will see any more River Song. the way I understand it, the first time Ten saw her in the library, it was her last time seeing him. likewise, the last time MS saw her, it was her first time... which means she wouldn't have any interactions with Capaldi or future incarnations. once the Doctor told her his true name, I think that was the last major point or "spoiler" in their story, from her perspective. I could be wrong but I think her story is done, and honestly I think it should be.

Ya, I saw an interview with Matt Smith saying he wants River to not come back. Personally, I think at some point well see another River regeneration, whether it makes sense or not. I just think its one of those things that is easy enough for them to pull off and get a cheap reaction from.
Paging krissyjo Would it be wrong of me to start a friend blindly at the first Matt Smith episode? I think he would be more into it where it is streamlined with new Doctor/Companion and more serialized overall. Basically i want to talk to him about it and think he will quit before Matt smith, but would end up going back and Tennant would turn out to be a treat. Is this cruel of me?
My roommate forced me to start watching Doctor Who. I had no desire. It took me a while to get into it, but man, I love that show now. I didn't realize how much I loved 11 until they announced he'd be regenerating. I think that this one will be the hardest to get used to.

I think that's fine to do, though he won't get some connections that may be important, but he can always go back and start with Eccelston once he's into the Matt Smith seasons.
Also - Why would anyone ever stop watching Doctor Who?!?! That's crazy talk!
The Master makes the most sense to me, but it still doesn't seem right. I will say I also noticed how they kept using the term boyfriend between The Doctor and Clara in that episode, then Missy used it also.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see. On a side note, Peter Capaldi is fucking awesome.
