How much of that is a generalization? One thing I always liked about Roo was the hippie dippies and vagabond monks and wooks. Is there not much of that at Firefly? Because Roo's gotten pretty bro-ey too, but if that's the entire vibe of Firefly...I might just have to make the trek down to Tennessee.

Firefly was the worst festival crowd I have expirienced.

That's far and away the majority of the Firefly crowd. I agree Roo has gotten kind of broey too. But no where near the level of Firefly.

If Roo is getting Bro-ey, Firefly is Bro. Its like Spring Break to the youth in the North East who dont want to go to Jersey because that happens every other weekend, not a culture and vibezzz per the music fest. I was on the bubble too. Friends were bailing on Roo at the sight of Firefly's lineup, but it took me a few minutes to realize Roo is so much more fulfilling. Dont know if its the 13 hour pilgrimage to and from, the late nights, the 30+ hours awake hallucinations, or just the great people one can meet by sitting in the shade, waiting in line for the portos or pizza. Some Roocrews are friends who hangout 365 days a year, some only see eachother for the week in Manchester. But hey, Bonnaroo is one big crew, and I cant go a year without going to see all my friends. Could be something as simple as the Southern Hospitality where everyone has an "us" mentality which includes all rather then a "we" mentality which excludes everybody else, but I think its something more. Theres magic on that there farm.
What's up with Fireflys front page? In the background Avicii and Beck are listed as part of the lineup. I think they're trying to tell us something.
Yeah I've hear from a bunch of ppl that the website has Avicci, Beck, and Lady Gaga listed in the server... I'm guessing they were all at one time on the lineup, but not anymore.

Wow whats the deal with that? At first I had definitely decided to do Firefly over Roo this year to save money and avoid the long drive, but now Im having second thoughts. After several looks at the lineup im realizing the undercard is awful - out of a 26 line poster I dont recognize any acts on the bottom 11. Plus this recent talk of the Frat Boy crowd is a big turn off. Not a fan of Avicii, but if they add Beck (and Haim was on some versions of the lineup) then they'll have me sold.

Don't go into this fest expecting a replacement for Bonnaroo. This fest is NOT Bonnaroo not even close. If you go to it expecting it to be it's own thing and you have a good group of friends to make it fun, you'll have fun. But yeah, expect the broeyest of bros everywhere you look. There's a college literally right down the street so the frat crowd is in mass effect. If you're a person who only cares about the music and not so much the "vibe" you'll have a blast though =).

Yeah very true. Bonnaroo 2013 was the best summer festival Ive ever been to, I dont think any fest can compete with it. I just dont want to completely regret skipping this year. There are enough acts on the FF lineup to keep me happy, but jeez the people who go to this thing. I just joined the FF message board, and the people on their are ridiculous. Ive already read numerous people complain that Paramore and Skrillex should be on the lineup. Others are saying they've never heard of Jack Johnson. SMH.

Well I mean really though, why ARENT Paramore and Skrillex on the lineup?

I gotta say I didn't have a bad experience last year. Its certainly not Bonnaroo (which of course it isn't, Bonnaroo is different than any other fest out there due to environment alone) You're going to get bro's at every fest you go to and i didn't think this was a bad crowd by any means. I actually saw a lot more older folks here than I did at Bonnaroo. Overall i'd say the fest was very laid back and while somewhat overcrowded at times it was well run. Its definitely an acceptable substitute for the east coast IMO. And for the record i'm almost 30 so my tolerance for obnoxious bro's is pretty low
EDIT: Outkast was originally one of the Headliners you could rate, but they are now gone from the list. Either means they're going after them or they are unrealistic.
So I think it's safe to say that Outkast was shopping around a bit or were at least getting approached quite a long time ago. This is the first post in this thread.
"And I'm on the edge of, and I'm on the edge of...somethin good."
So I listened to quite a few bands on the lower lines of the Firefly lineup, because why not? I have to applaud Firefly for going for a sound and sticking with it. Every line has like 3+ bands that have that anthem-esque pop-rock sound reminiscent of Imagine Dragons, Young the Giant, Cage the Elephant, Fun., etc.
This includes Gemini Club, The Griswolds, New Politics, Basic Vacation, Royal Teeth, The Ceremonies, holychild, the Colourist, the Mowglis, American Authors, Cash Cash, A Great Big World, Nonono, and Bleachers (who do not have any music but is Jack Antonoff's latest project, so I can only assume it'll have that sound as well).
I could see every one of these bands getting featured in commercials and finding their way onto the radio, only to annoy the hell out of us in a year or two, and take precious subheadlining spots away from bands we want to see at music festivals in years to come.

I've read that Firefly volunteers work three 5-7 hour shifts during the fest...is this par for the course for volunteering at festivals? I'd be happy to help, but I feel like I'd miss a decent amount - especially if there's no pre- or post-fest option. However, I also read a blog in which someone only worked one 4-hour shift. Is there any flexibility in what shift you get? Can you request to switch or work with a friend?
The general rule of thumb for volunteering is that you're taking the spot of someone they'd have to pay $10 an hour for. So if the price of a ticket is $240 you'll probably end up working four 6 hour shifts or three 8 hour shifts. You usually don't have a say for which shifts with most fests, but I'm not sure about firefly.
It's interesting that they use this logic. By volunteering, your ticket is not worth $240 anymore as you'll be missing quite a few of the acts you'll want to see.
Very, very interesting... Firefly announced today ticket sales end tomorrow night at midnight for early bird pricing and will resume on February 18th along with some "Exciting Announcements". This is the day before BLAM. I wonder what they might have planned. It's definitely out of the ordinary to take a festival completely off sale after a majority of the lineup has been announced.
