Thanks for the help, just grabbed a ticket! Excited for my first day at Newport!
Take I-93 South to Route 24 South to Newport. It's about an hour from Boston to Newport but it will take an extra 30-60 minutes to get into Fort Adams depending on when you get there. It will take about about an hour to get out of Newport after Ryan Adams. One way in and one way out to Fort Adams (unfortunately) but it's worth it.
I'm still a little skeptical. If you notice, it looks like in between Newport and Connecticut he'd have to first make a trip to PA. Kind of a wonky schedule bouncing back and forth.
But it is still very doable. However, I feel like they've used up all/most of their repeat acts. IF they bring another act back, I'd expect it to be one with a new album (The Felice Brothers) or one riding a tidal wave of popularity (Lord Huron).
Although, I still think Langhorne holding down an aftershow (either for one night or for multiple nights) is plausible.

Thank you! I was looking at the Friday schedule from last year and I was surprised by how early it ended. Is this always the case?

Newport Folk has strict curfews given its proximity to residential areas. You practically park in people's yards.
However, last year was the first year the festival had billed Friday as part of the festival/regular lineup. In previous years, they had Friday shows with 2-3 acts. 2012 featured Wilco, and that ran into the evening at the fort. I think in years before that, the shows were held offsite.
(disclaimer that last year was my first year, so some of the festival regulars may have more insight)

Not sure if your reading that schedule wrong but Newport would be between Winnipeg and CT. Why you mentioning PA?

You are right. I read the schedule wrong. For some reason I thought the Campfire Festival was at the end of July.

Interesting! I'm cool with it ending early, I love a good outdoors show during the day/afternoon. Not like Ryan Adams needs a light show or anything.

Better to park somewhere in Newport and either a) rent a bike or bring one and bike to the fort or b) even better take the water taxi… super easy and cheaper than driving
Yeah but I think the price also has to do with the artists as well. They don't usually have big names on Friday so that may be why it is cheaper.

It's cheaper because it's 2hours shorter and I think Ryan Adams>Band Of Horses > Jimmy Cliff > Jenny Lewis > Robert Hunter or Feist & Old Crowe are "big names" for a 10k festival. I don't know another small festival that brings in the same caliber of names for a fair price.

Good point. The bike is the better idea. Traffic in Newport during the festival is brutal. The water taxi lines from the fort are pretty long too and they will dump you off at the harbor where hundreds of people will then be looking to drive out. If you bring a bike you should park up near Bellevue Ave to get as far away from the harbor area as possible. It will put you ahead of a lot of the traffic getting out of town.
El-D and i talked about his mention above the last time we were hanging with.. It's def. still in serious consideration for planning.
(For those new to the thread, many of the folks posting will be staying at 'Quack Club' over the weekend. We 'carpool' over and back with an 16 pass. rental van or two..)
Need to see who/how many but seriously thinking about an after nff parking lot 'tailgate' while traffic clears. Need to do some homework to see if feasible.
Has Needtobreathe played Newport in the past? If not, they seem like another obvious choice ala The Wild Feathers. A kind southern folk-rock. I wrote their last albums off because they were fairly generic sounding, but I just checked out the album that is being released tomorrow and it's pretty good.
Also, Sun Kil Moon's tour still has him primed for an appearance.
