I love Phoenix, but it's safe to say KoL are just as popular to some and Phoenix headlined last year.
Yeah KOL are leagues above Phoenix in terms of popularity. Phoenix has never done an arena tour in the US (some arena shows, but no tour). KOL always tour arenas and almost always sell them out. Also their record sales aren't even comparable. KOL has 5 million sold in the US and Phoenix is barely 1 million. If Phoenix could headline Lolla (twice!), then KOL can definitely be a headliner this year.
Same argument works for Arctic Monkeys, since their sales and popularity have really taken a boost this year in the states.

That's a great theory and all, but you seem to be forgetting that Kings of Leon are really shitty.

I really wish people would stop saying KOL are shitty. They have roughly 80 songs, and a majority of them are great. Everyone I've talked to has said their live show is one of the best they've seen. Yeah they have some main stream songs, but they have depth, and are fun live. I hope they are a headliner so I can finally see them!

Wow real quality in here over the last few days! No reason to argue music. Some people thought the Beatles sucked. It's all subjective. I respect Radiohead, but not much of a fan.
The Rolling Stones just popped up at Pink Pop in Europe in June. Maybe? Doubt it though.
My guess as of now
Friday- South- Outkast v KoL on north Saturday Kanye on south v AM on north Sunday PJ on South v Skrilly bear on north. The rock just seems to light per Lolla history of being rock heavy.
I would love for them to do Tool instead of KoL, and Coldplay instead of Kanye.

It is true. They really do put on one of the best live shows, performance wise and they have a bad ass production for this tour as welll.
Living in Chicago for the past four years, I enjoy Lollapalooza immensely. I love that you get the music festival feel while still having the ability to enjoy the large abundance of other things to do in the city. If you're planning on going to Lolla, I recommend researching hotels (the closer, the better; you're going to be exhausted by the time the day is over) and booking a room as soon as you can because they sell out very quickly. Also, definitely stick around in the city for a while before/after the festival because there are so many awesome things to do there in the summer.

Amen. I just saw them on their current tour, and holy crap the stage production was insane. It was a great great show. And yes, people need to stop judging them by the 4 songs they had on the radio. Aha Shake Heartbreak and Because of the Times are amazing albums.

so sad that they didn't play comeback story...that song....

I really wish they swapped family tree with comeback story. Family tree is the only song on the new album I always skip.

The fact that you included those two albums and left off Youth and Young Manhood speaks volumes.
KOL's first three albums are different degrees of "good." It's been a sharp downward spiral since then. If they were playing shows focused only on those first three albums then yes, the hate would be misplaced. But since they're going to play absolute shit like Sex on Fire and Use Somebody and their other crap singles, its fair to say that theyre shitty.

If your defense of a band starts with "Well, if you ignore their most popular songs which they play at nearly every show, they're actually pretty good" it's typically not a good sign.
For the past 5 years, Fuji Rock has had at least one headliner from that lineup that also headlined Lolla.
For the past 3 years Osheaga and Lolla have shared many undercard acts and at least one headliner.
Looking at the lineups, Outkast seems much more likely to play Lolla now. They are a sub headliner under Kanye West, now I know it sounds crazy but could Lolla have possibly Outkast open for kanye? I think it's more likely that Outkast and Kanye will headline separate nights, if Lolla were to get them.
The EDM at Fuji Rock is very different, so is Osheaga. Lolla could have a nice EDM roster.
The undercard at both of these festivals is very intriguing, and Lolla is golden for getting great undercard.
My recent guesses for headliner are now this.
Friday: Outkast(Bud Light) vs Coldplay(Red Bull) Saturday: Tool(Bud Light) Kings of Leon(Red Bull) Sunday: Skrillex(Bud Light) Soundgarden(Red Bull)
Reasons for these predictions Outkast is playing Fuji which is a week before Lolla, and usually is a good indication of who plays Lolla. Coldplay could fill the shoes of Arcade Fire who were ruled out by booking two shows in Chicago a couple weeks after Lolla. They have a new album out, I don't see why not. They headlined in 2011, but if they didn't get Arcade Fire or Muse, the next best thing is Coldplay. KOL haven't really played any festivals this year, but last year they played ACL, which is run by the same company that runs Lolla called C3, ACL and Lolla were pretty similar last year minus a few acts. They will be this year's killers! Tool has finished their album, they aren't playing many shows, but they have been known for their previous Lolla performances, and I think it's safe to say they got them as this year's NIN slot. Skrillex is touring, he skipped EDC and spring awakening, you know what that means? He's playing Lolla, and he's too big for Perry's, trust me on this, he will be a headliner on bud light. I was thinking Pearl Jam for the longest, but then I thought about it again. Soundgarden just played "Superunknown" in full at SXSW. They did this because it's the 20th anniversary of that album. This is definitely something Lolla would get on board with, and I'm sticking with it. Who do you guys think? Lolla has been more quiet than usual so the suspense is killing me! Who will play Lolla this year!
Post by thepeppers on Mar 15, 2014 22:49:03 GMT -5
For me it will mainly come down to if Pearl Jam is on the lineup or not. Although Forecastle undercard is rather weak (for me at least) and their is less to do in Louisville then there is Chicago, it is a great value festival. Not a bad price for a weekend pass, it would cut down our travel time in half (compared to going to Lolla), and it has 3 headliners I would love to see.
If PJ is on the lineup, then that would give me two headliners I would love to see plus an undercard that I am assuming I will like. Plus I would be able to take in a game at Wrigley on Thursday, and do a few other things.

Now with this Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails tour, I can go ahead and scratch soundgarden haha. So it has to be Pearl Jam right? At this point, I have no idea. I also think that Outtkast won't be playing Lolla, it's really looking like Lolla will be getting Kanye, since he is free during Lolla right after playing Fuji rock. That's cool, but I really wanted Outkast, who might be playing North Coasf as their lone chicago date, which sucks, because I don't live in chicago. Tool, Kings of Leon, Artic Monkeys, and Skrillex seem to round out the remaining acts.
So it should look like this in April barring no new acts Pearl Jam, Tool, Kanye West, Kings of Leon, Skrillex, Arctic Monkeys,
If I'm wrong about Outkast, then it should look like this. Pearl Jam, Tool, Outkast, Kings of Leon, Artic Monkeys, Skrillex. At least there's one new headliner haha.
My last guess Pearl Jam, Tool, Coldplay, Justin Timberlake, Outkast, Arctic Monkeys. Two new headliners on this one.

Tool is not ready yet. That report came from a joke said on stage. The album will not be out soon- but they are still somewhat possible. PJ has to announce a late summer - fall tour as they have not played many markets in US and we have some moderately reliable source that announced the wrigley show last July early. Outkast and AM are near locks based on Osheaga. Is AM the Saturday north headliner? Or north sub on Sunday?(Flo/VW spot) JT is suspicious through his dates. Lolla hasn't done a huge mainstream pop act in a while- Gaga in 2010. I just doubt they pay his booking fee when a cheaper option will sell just fine. Selling out is not a problem for Lolla. I think #2 is the wildcard. Is it Kanye/Coldplay/JT? Lolla has done a good job of keeping quiet. Last year the leak came out on the 20th of March. Let's see if something comes out. At this point I am done speculating, and I am going to sit quiet til something breaks.

You guys, JT's dates make him pretty unlikely. Also, Pearl Jam played every major market last fall, including a huge stadium show in Chicago. They're certainly possible (much more so than JT), but I wouldn't bet my savings on it. I like the chances of Coldplay more than either of those two at this point.

They didn't play Nashville, Atlanta and I believe the state of Florida. Plus wrigley wasn't officially apart of the lightning bolt tour. Chicago has not been apart of this tour, last July aside. PJ still has dates left in the us. Not more than a month or so though. I agree with Coldplay. Seem likely if tour rumblings start soon.

I have no inside information, but I think it is very likely they will be there. There should be some kind of Fall tour announcement (Matt Cameron didn't skip the entire Soundgarden tour this summer and fall in order to play Australia in January and Europe in July). And the band loves Chicago. Personally, I would rather have a regular tour stop as they get to play much longer than they would at Lolla, but I will take what I can get. Hopefully we start getting some solid info soon.
