I've only heard stories about Lolla crowds but I still maintain that the worst crowd Bonnaroo has seen was 2011. No crowd of 80,000+ people is perfect, but that year was noticeably bad. IMO, the last two years have been better than that. I have no doubt that this year's Lolla will draw a shitty crowd, but at the same time, the three day passes were gone before anyone even knew the lineup at all. So, the new people coming strictly for the EDM/pop at Lolla will have to get their way in through single day passes
Obviously, Lolla vets are disappointed in this line-up but in a way, I get that they're trying to differentiate their festival from Coachella/Bonnaroo/ACL. Look at the headliners: 2 rap, 2 rock, 2 EDM. I'd expect to see that pattern repeated in the future.
But Flume, Darkside, Gesaffelstein, Duke Dumont, Glitch Mob, Gramatik, Cut/Copy, Blood Orange is very solid dance and electronic. Lolla did good in that regard.
Last thing, I may be out of touch but I know almost NONE of the bottom 50 acts on the line-up. After the line that ends with Temples, I've only heard one(!) act and that was John Batiste because I researched him from the Bonnaroo line-up. Seriously makes me feel out of touch.
That simply is not true. There are lots of people considering Lollapalooza this year who haven't in past years. Just because someone has different musical preferences than me doesn't automatically qualify them as wrong and me as right.
Lolla crowds are usually terrible, even for acts that are critically respected. I do believe this year will be worse. I'm still going and it sold out in record time so it doesn't really fucking matter. Message boards like this exist to debate pointless and stupid shit like this.
I think the fact that it sold out without a majority of people really even having time to look at the lineup also points to the fact it'll be just like every other year.
But seriously, what we should be bitching about right now is how shitty these terrible bands are, not the "bad vibez" they're gonna bring.
The first four lines of the lineup are vomit inducing. I don't understand why they would go out of their way to book such generic bands
I hate the lineup but you guys sound like my parents did when I was really getting into metal as a young teenager. "this music isn't music, the fans must suck etc..."

My father has been trying to convince me for 20 years that Jamie Lee Curtis is hot. Sometimes parents are just flat out wrong.
Thanksgiving must be quite an event at the Billybaroo household.
Man, quack ticket scalpers. Luckily the only day I want to go to is Sunday, and honestly it's just to see Gambino and Chance. Gambino's show was amazing saturday, and I was a little messed up through most of it, so I'd love to see him again, and Chicago is close enough to make it worth it.

Totally agree with this, Roo 2011 was my first Roo and made me never want to go back. I'm glad I took a chance last year and fell in love with it, but 2011 was pretty awful.
And Cut Copy will make any festival good for an hour or so.
Roo in 2011 was my first Roo, I went back in 2012. I didn't think the crowd was that bad in 2011 although some random dude randomly took a swing at me when I was walking through my campsite during broad daylight. Dude knocked my sunglasses off and completely missed everything else, I looked at him and was like what the hell, (I'm a big guy, 6'5, 230) and he just ran away. It was very strange.
I'm glad I happen to be just on the upper edge of Lolla's target age market this year. I love the line up , even if I think some of the bands might be more fun than unique.
Unfortunately, I've gotta find myself a wristband on the secondary market .

After letting the lineup realities settle in, I'm feeling more optimistic about going. No, there aren't enough first half must see bands for me, but they are there. I think the success of Lolla this year for me rests on the shoulders of all these bands I've never heard of. All it would take are 3-4 surprises to make the weekend. My favorite moments last year revolved around the surprise performances from bands I'd either never heard of (St. Lucia, Lianne La Havas), or bands that sounded leagues better than their recorded output (Palma Violets, Haim).
Going through the lineup now, I'm finding quite a few unknowns that I wouldn't mind seeing. It's actually relieving that I won't have many conflicts to worry about, and I can just casually take in the whole festival with my gf.
I'd still rather be at Pitchfork, but work put the kabosh on that dream

I'm excited for my third Lolla in a row! It's not better than the previous lineups I attended but it's something I can dig.
Eminem,Outkast,Lorde, KOL, Manchester orchestra, and FTP alone make it worth the trip for me. Some of my favorite artists past or present.
My only complaint is the overload of EDM, and I know why they did it so, it's not so bad. There's really good EDM(Chase and Status,Rudimental, Gramatik,Anna Lunoe,Skrillex,Glitch Mob), then garbage EDM(Krewells,Calvin Harris,Zedd)

Last year I did a lot of split sets. So this year, since the day breakdown isn't as stacked as previous years, I came up with a plan. I list 5 must sees each day, and 5 bands that strike curiousity to fill the rest of my day. This is just a rough version so far.
Friday
Top Five 1. Eminem 2. Lorde 3. Interpol 4. Phantogram 5. Chrvches
Curious Five 1. Lykke Li 2. The Kooks 3. Bombay Bicycle Club 4. Jagwar Ma 5. AFI
Saturday
Top Five 1. Outkast 2. Foster the People 3. Spoon 4. Manchester Orchestra 5. Parquet Courts
Curious Five 1. Kate Nash 2. Nas 3. Temper Trap 4. Anna Lunoe 5. Joywave
Sunday
Top Five 1. Kings of Leon 2. London Grammar 3. Run the Jewels 4. Chance the Rapper 5. Kongos

San Fermin is a nice little nugget on Friday that I wasn't familiar with before. They have the chamber-pop style similar to groups like Sufjan, Inlets, and the Dirty Projects (similar harmonies to the DPs as well). Apparently they also feature vocals from the women in Lucius, if that's your thing.

To anyone interested...just saw Wild Cub and Gemini Club last night (great show by the way - especially Gemini Club if you like upbeat dance-type stuff like Capital Cities). They announced they're playing an aftershow at House of Blues with a "B. B." band. Which can only mean Broken Bells. So there you have it. Broken Bells and Wild Cub are playing a Lolla aftershow. Cheers!
Holy shit. Big win right there. 100% checking that out. How was Wild Cub? Pumped see them on Friday at Hangout Fest. Might be the only one from my group there and I'm completely okay with that.
Been going to Lolla since 2011 and this is probably the least excited about the lineup that I've been but the undercard seems pretty strong. After listening to a lot of the lower tier bands for awhile I've found a lot that I haven't known about before that I am looking forward to. Also really looking forward to that Outkast set if they're still interested in their show by the time August comes around. It will be interesting to see how the aftershows play out, I'm hoping they're better than last year's although I did get to see The Mowgli's/The Bright Light Social Hour and MS MR/Two Door Cinema Club. Both shows were great.
Friday: Eminem, Lorde, Spoon, Broken Bells, Phantogram, Chvrches, Glitch Mob, Portugal. The Man, The Kooks, Warpaint, Kodaline, Blood Orange, Jagwar Ma, Vic Mensa, San Fermin, Of Verona Saturday: Outkast, Nas, Cut/Copy, Fitz, Grouplove, Gramatik, Jenny Lewis, Manchester Orchestra, Typhoon, Kate Nash, Vance Joy, Smallpools, Jungle, Royal Blood, Ratking, Meg Myers Sunday: Skrillex, Avett Brothers, Childish Gambino, Chance the Rapper, Young the Giant, Chromeo, Darkside, The 1975, Glen Hansard, Gesaffelstein, Flume, Trombone Shorty, Run the Jewels, White Denim, Jhene Aiko, Kongos, NoNoNo, Fly Golden Eagle, Space Capone
Obviously not going to get to see all of these but those are the acts I'm somewhat interested in with the headliners I'm seeing.
