Yeah, but in the NCAA tourney, Kentucky, Michigan, Duke and UNC typically do not play each other until later in the tournament. They get to play Bucknell or Yale first.

I'm okay with this draw. I mean how many times is the US considered part of the Group of Death anyway? (I honestly don't know the answer, but it can't be often, if ever). I guess Australia and Costa Rica would argue about which group is really the Group of Death - but from a top to bottom world ranking, Group G should be considered the real one. Beat Ghana, tie Portugal, and hope Germany has it wrapped up by the third game. Plus, who knows, I mean who knows the Mannschaft better than Klinsman? Then play either 1H or 2H which to my untrained eyes looks like the weakest group.
I don't think we're in the group of death. Ghana barely qualified, Portugal had the easiest qualifying group and Europe and barely made it in, they are a good tournament team though. I think we either go 1-1-1 or 2-1-0 a loss to Germany is inevitable.
(I copy/pasted this from the "ITT: Football/Soccer" thread. I didn't realize this thread existed)
I predict we draw with Ghana, lose by a goal or two to Portugal, and get stomped by about 4 goals to Germany.
Another interesting development is that Brazil will have to play either Spain or Netherlands in the first round of the knock-out stage, and possibly have to play Germany in the semifinals.
Predictions for the Group Stage:
A. 1. Brazil 2. Mexico B. 1. Spain 2. Netherlands C. 1. Columbia 2. Japan D. 1. Italy 2. Uruguay E. 1. France 2. Switzerland F. 1. Argentina 2. Nigeria G. 1. Germany 2. Portugal H. 1. Russia 2. Belgium
Knock-Out Predictions
Brazil def. Netherlands Spain def. Mexico Columbia def. Uruguay Italy def. Japan France def. Nigeria Argentina def. Switzerland Germany def. Belgium Portugal def. Russia
Quarterfinals
Brazil def. Columbia Germany def. France Spain def. Italy Argentina def. Portugal
Semifinals
Germany def. Brazil (This is insane to have to pick. Germany is the better squad, but Brazil will have insane homefield advantage) Spain def. Argentina
Finals
Germany def. Spain (Brazil def. Argentina for 3rd place match)

Ha, I don't think anything is incorrect here. At the very least, you explained your reasoning. However, the US were the strongest team in their pot, and the other 3 teams are at worst the top 2-3 in their pots, so I don't think it's an exaggeration to call this group the GROUP OF DEATH. I kind of just hate the term, though. I agree with you that groups B and D look pretty tough as well. Balotelli and Suarez in the same group alone makes Group D one of the most entertaining. The English (accompanied by their, er, enthusiastic media) being in D as well basically set that group up as the most disastrous fun.
I think it's a stretch to count on the US to make it out of the group, but I do think it's possible. Even with Klinsi's extensive knowledge of the German players, a result against them is almost out of the question. That team is ridiculous, on both a team and individual level. A result off Portugal would be an achievement. It's not impossible, though. The team is chock-full of individual quality, but have always been a bit one dimensional when attacking, relying mostly on their wide play. That's not a weakness obviously when one of those individuals is Cristiano Ronaldo, but it makes it tactically a bit more predictable to defend. A game between Ghana and the US is a wash. Both teams have veteran cores with heaps of experience filled out with relatively fresh faces to international soccer. Playing them first is a huge plus, though. This will be said over and over, but a win in the first game against them is absolutely necessary. It sets the US up in a position to grind out results against better opposition in group games 2 and 3, rather then chasing the game and leaving our largely untested back line exposed.
I'm way too worked up for this right now and it's December.

It's a shame that the US sent Mexico through and now they're almost guarunteed to advance out of their group, while we're stuck in one of the hardest, if not the hardest group.

Portugal's easy. They are beautiful, talented, and as fragile as elderly herons in a stiff breeze when adversity strikes. Oooooooh, but Ronaldo is so impossibly beautiful. Our forefathers were ugly bastards with wooden teeth, syphilis, and smallpox scars, and our current national hero is Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is not pretty: he is ruggedly handsome, he tried to save the world from the earnest tyranny of John Cena and he ruled Egypt as the Scorpion King.
This war's over before it even started, Portugal. Call him anything but "Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson" and we'll alter the terms of your premature surrender to the harshest degree imaginable. Now go cry into pillows made of your chief export, cork, you beautiful, frangible Iberians.
Oh no! I didnt even think of the World Cup and Roo being at the same time! From experience, do they show all the games? or just US?
Probably depends on what form of Sports Bar tent is there this year. I don't think there was one last year though, could be wrong. Maybe they bring it back where the World Cup is going on. It's likely the US game will be shown in the cinema tent. In 2010 I think they showed a few games aside from the US on the lunar stage but that probably won't be the case this year as the liner stage is gone.

Yeah it was fun to get a quick sports fix in between shows. 2010 was my first year at the Roo. I believed they also showed a bit of the NBA finals as well.

If I saw correctly, the US doesn't play during bonnaroo, but their first game is on Monday. a little bit of a relief to me, seeing that the artist lineup is already pretty stacked for me.

5PM CST on the Monday the US play.
England vs Italy is on the Saturday and I think Spain vs Holland is some point during Roo too.

Forgot about you Brits that are coming over...how USA-centric my thoughts have been.

To be honest, like most other Liverpool fans I'm not too fussed about the national side. I'm of Irish heritage and internationally tend to follow them more than England. I don't want them to lose or anything, but it doesn't bother me so much. I skipped England vs Germany at the last WC for Gang of Four and Ray Davies, we lost and I saw two great sets. I expect similar at Roo!
In case anyone missed it, looks like World Cup games will be shown at the new Kalliope Stage during the day: www.bonnaroo.com/activities/kalliope
Apparently it's a mobile stage that has been at Burning Man (maybe other festivals?). I was looking for something in my schedule Friday early afternoon, and Spain vs Netherlands might just be the perfect fit.
