Fuck Jack White. He called out the media after only 2 songs. Who the fuck does this guy think he is. Then he goes into this weird name game where he just name musicians from TN. The he starts talking about Johnny Depp of all people and Alber Einstein. I had to leave because it was just too much. I like his music and everything but he sounded like a fucking idiot. There was hardly hardly anyone there. The crowd only really went back to the beer stand behind the soundboard. Very disappointed in what I saw. Just shut up and play. We do t need any of that extra bullshit.
Ok that was all sarcastic and I don't care about anything he did. He sounded good and it was a good. He did do everything I posted previously though. The point of the post is to show all the Kanye haters how stupid they sound
See the difference is, Jack was paying homage to those people and he used other ppl (Einstein, etc) to show examples of how all of us (even Jack) can accomplish much, even if you start with next to nothing. Quite different than what was said Friday night.
You know that is what Kanye is talking about too. How people told him he could only be a producer and that he would never be a rapper. And now they do the same thing with him in fashion. Y'all just don't get it I guess.
Not trying to start an argument, but I thought Kanye mentioned something about coming from the south side of Chicago. The difference between Jack White and Kanye West is Kanye's a black man/has a lot more going against him. He's angry because he has had the media go after him unfairly (sometimes he sets himself up, but take Katrina for example, he was dead right and everyone mocked him for it)
Kanye plays the race card every time he acts like an egomaniac. He went on stage and whined about the media, other bands, people spray painting portapottys, etc... All he had to do was keep his mouth shut and deliver a great show, instead he claimed to be the greatest rock star on the planet and compared himself to Mozart.
Why?
Grouplove had the best set / audience of Roo. They spent their show thanking everyone for being there, throwing CDs into the crowd, and making it just a great time. Jack White kept playing song after song, he said "you've been an excellent audience, and I've been Jack White". I was literally laying on the ground dying during Jack White, and I was still sold on it.

Well fuck. If you're going to be rational about it.....

It just doesn't make sense to me. Kanye isn't stupid. All he had to do was humble himself, the haters would have had nothing to work with, and he'd have wound up proving he belongs at Roo. Instead, he proved his ego is out of control. He knew he was stepping into a mixed crowd, why justify the hatred?
I used to think Kanye did the dumb stuff ("imma let you finish") as publicity stunts, but at this point, I have to conclude he really has ego / pride issues. Jack White said things in a different way, he also doesn't have Kanye's history, and simply did a better job of firing up all of the audience, not just his fans in the pit.
I can not wait for all the Jack White/Kanye fights today. All I ask is that you be respectful of the each other's opinion regardless of which camp you belong to.
All I'm saying is Jack White acts like a prick/crazy person just as much as Kanye, but seems to get a fraction of the flack Kanye gets
Have to agree with you on this one. Every single article leading up to the release of his new album had Jack White making negative comments or flat out insulting members of other bands or other musicians. Now you have to remember that Kanye was waxing poetic about a lamp before putting out Yeezus and he says some pretty stupid shit all/some of the time. Jack White is also riding around in his yard listening to his album mixes on a walkie talkie in order to get the sound right. They're both eccentric.
People just seem to hate Kanye because he says dumb things every now and then. However, if you step back and objectively look at the things he says, it's all braggadocio and very little of it is negative. He's praising himself instead of cutting down other people (like Jack White claiming that the Black Keys are merely riding his coattails) which turns people off a lot of the time because confidence is threatening to some.
I missed Roo this year (which makes me sad) but I've seen Kanye a few times in the past. He rants. He talks. He yells. He goes on way too long and it can disrupt the flow of a show if you're not expecting it. He has also always been super positive, very smart, and seemingly very honest in the things he has said. He's a crazy person, like all artists, but he channels that crazy into some damn fine music.
I'm not comparing Kanye/Jack or saying that either is better/worse. Just saying that objectively, Kanye catches way more BS for the things he says.

I don't care who's playing as long as I can have a Thurman Murman.

Deservedly so. People pay money to hear an artists music, not long, crazy ass rants. Be as big of a dlck in your personal/professional life as you want. But, leave it backstage on show nights.
Maybe Kanye should begin writing his thoughts in a journal, then he can do a reading tour and charge the fanatics money to hear his egotistical, bat shit crazy thoughts. Me? I just wanted to hear Goldigger......
EDIT: Sorry, was on my phone and didn't properly edit that quote.

His Twitter account makes me question the educational system in southern Chicago.

Every single article? Do you mean the one rolling stone interview that he explained and apologized for? What other articles leading up to this album are you talking about?

Show was great, music was amazing, I don't care about who you are off the stage, its about the act and the set.
When I asked people about jacks set, resounding "amazing".
I did not see Kanye, but I heard no crowd sound from Kanyes set. When I asked several people it always starred "well it was good, but...." even from die hard lovers.
Consistently when I asked about the best sets people saw, it was "Jack White, Phoenix, and/or the flaming lips".

I was at Bonnaroo in 2008 and waited like an idiot to see Kanye, only to walk back to my tent after a few songs because i just couldn't stay up any longer. I gave him another try at Lollapalooza that same summer and it wasn't until he stated "nobody compares me to The Beatles or Jimi Hendrix so I have to stand up here and do it for myself" that I walked over to watch NIN. It's just amazing how he was pulling this type of stuff back in 2008 and still feels a need to do it now. How many artists do you know that run around constantly telling people who they should be compared to. As an artist, shouldn't you just do your thing and let people decide their own comparisons? Isn't it better to be put in those people's rank based on your art and not because you tell people they should? And if people don't make that comparison, maybe it's because you haven't reached they level yet.
I have stories about Jack White from when he lived in Detroit and yes he does have his temper issues. The major difference I see is that the only major beef that he has out there is with The Black Keys. The other things people took offense to in that recent Rolling Stone article were taken a bit out of context in my opinion. I have also never read anything where jack thinks he should be respected in the same light as The Beatles or Hendrix. I watched his set on the stream and his comment about Rolling Stone not making music happen but artists and fans making music happen seemed appropriate and positive in my opinion. His speech about "something better to do" was more about the possibilities that exist in all of us, rather than comparing himself to those people.
I didn't see Kanye's set and if I would have been there, I would have skipped it anyway. I like some of his music but I just don't like him as a person and for some reason I can't put that aside when watching him perform. I really don't care for any type of hate when it comes to Bonnaroo and I respect people's opinion's, but saying Jack White has done more crazy stuff than Kanye is ludicrous. Search them both on the internet and count the amount of articles on each artist that are about them doing something eccentric and egotistical, Kanye wins hands down.
that john lennon had some ego on him. bigger than jesus, he says. as an artist, he should have done his thing and let people decide their own comparisons.

More *popular* than Jesus, and he wasn't wrong about it.

BTW both are egotistical I think that kanye just has more of his comments reported and picked apart. Or maybe he has more interviews. Idk. But both make great music and divisive comments.
Also I wad getting worried when they announced jack was pushed back 15 mins on the screens. I Thought it'd be his turn to make people wait a few hours lol

This is hilarious! Still trying to drag Jack down to Kanyes level?? Why are we even mentioning Kanye in a Jack White thread? I watched Jacks set on tv with 3 people who had no opinion of him. They were blown away! Thought he was an outstanding musician and performer, was genuine to his band and audience, and was a total pro. I sat there smiling, with my own like of Jack rising to love. Fantastic headliner. Same can be said about Elton.

My guess is that they were similar. Solo acts who are divisive and egotistical who headlined bonnaroo in 2014 and both made comments during the show about the media and used references to masters of their respective fields when talking about their goals. It was odd to have both air their grievances with the press at their shows.
I was lucky enough to get in the pit for this. It was the best set of the weekend and the best performance I've ever seen from Jack. I feel bad for anyone who missed this because they thought they "had something better to do".
