I love how Jack White gets to talk as much as he wants and it's considered charming and evidence of it being a special show, while Kanye gets berated and insulted all weekend for doing the same thing.
For me, I think it comes down to the structure of the ramblings. Jack rambled for short bursts between most songs while Kanye went for the long form, so Jack's took me out of the show less.
Loved the set list. Pretty much prefect for me. Was it just me or was his set extremely loud? I was in the back and felt like I was in the pit. So I know pit had to of been crazy.
Everyone was loud on What this year that I saw. The feedback was bad towards the middle. I had much higher audio quality when we moved over towards the vip hill.
Cowboy, a guy in my group, had seen jack several times. He was playing music he never plays, and generally he doesn't talk to the audience he is playing for. Cowboy said Jack was into it from the get go.
I may not be remembering correctly, but the last time I saw Jack White was at Voodoo 2012. The only time he addressed the crowd was right before the first song, when he said "So is this how it's gunna be?!" then he just rocked.
I was surprised and delighted at the amount of banter at Bonnaroo.

Its his backyard really.
With the audience reaction this year, I hope he makes more appearances at the farm, maybe a surprise tent show or a jack white super jam would be amazing

Kanye is known to rant, Jack usually doesn't do much talking at his shows as far as I know. So yeah it was special.

I've never seen Jack in the mood that he was in. He did ramble a bit but he more than made up for it. That fucking encore though. That was unreal. He just kept going. He doesn't do that. That show was special.
I'm a huge Jack fan and this was easily the most raw I have seen him. Easily the best set I have seen. I never got to see The White Stripes but this set got pretty close to what I think those shows would have felt like. There was anger, frustration, exuberance, excitement, and humility. It all added up to a very emotional show that was different than any of his I have seen, even on this tour.

I've seen the White Stripes and this was something completely different. Jack White now has 2 shows in my top 10 ever at roo.

I missed out on ever seeing the White Stripes, which are the band that actually got me into liking music to the degree that I do, so this was a very special show for me. I had never even been able to see Jack White in any of his other forms. It definitely seemed like he wanted to make the absolute most of his headlining slot at Bonnaroo. I loved every second of his banter with the crowd. The "something better to do" , "thank you for doing your job" , and his gratitude for the audience singing back to him "I can tell that we are gonna be friends" because it honors all those blues musicians who had no one to sing to stories were all wonderful. And that was no ordinary encore. Some people were bailing on the pit for the late nights. I wanted to see more of Frank Ocean. But there was absolutely no way I was ever going to leave the pit until he was off the stage and the lights were off.

^This. Also I thought the vibe to Jack's rants, especially the "Rolling Stone being a tabloid", almost came off as an apology for Kanye's rants. I had an overwhelming sense of Bonnaroo during JW's talking to us. As far as I'm concerned I couldn't give a fuck less about where the press is at. WE DO make music happen. All of us. I didn't get the slightest bit of arrogance out of that statement. Kanye wanted us all to focus on the wrongs the press had done. Jack was telling us to shut off whatever we had heard and let the music speak for itself. I was blown away with everything about this performance. One of the top shows I have ever seen at Roo.

I'm going to have to argue against the use of the word rambling as it's not quite appropriate.
Speaking (mostly) coherently for a few minutes a few times and making a rather poignant, positive point each time during a two hour + concert that you're headlining, 60 minutes from your house was a pretty endearing thing to experience as far as I'm concerned.
As for the show itself, it was the best I've ever seen. I have seen a ton of legends, been to 8 Roo's, several other festivals and hundreds of shows [this is only for context, not bragging]and NOTHING was as good as JW was on Saturday at Roo.
If anyone was wondering, Jack White solidified his position as one of the greatest to ever do it. We all watched it happen on Saturday night and you should all thank whatever you believe in that you got to be a part of it. It's not everyday you get to watch someone become a legend.
Oh, and to those who say he was heavy on Lazarretto. 5 songs out of 26 is hardly too many. The album was 5 days old. Have you ever been to a concert before? The acts tend to play new material.

My face hurt because of the smile I couldn't get rid of. When he started to play those songs in the encore I was going nuts....as were others around me.
Best show I've ever seen, hands down. Miles above when I saw him last time he toured, and that show was already in my top 10. His talking was beautiful and made it seem so special for so many people. Being in the pit was incredible and this was my first Bonnaroo, so what a way to kick it off. "Icky Thump" was the one song I was hoping he'd play because he didn't play it last time I saw him, so when he opened with that I pretty much died, and I knew I was in for one hell of a show. Seeing the man two more times this summer. It'll be amazing.

Dude was on a MISSION!!! Jack's "rants" were positive and about what individuals can do with their life, that sounds like the attitude at Bonnaroo! So I thought he was connecting with the people. Even when he talked about aliens coming to earth and laughing at us for making movies about conversations, I believe he said "why don't you just do that at home?" I felt like that is what he was doing with us, having a conversation.
This was one of the greatest shows I have ever witnessed. This kind of show is the reason Bonnaroo is so special!

I was thinking the same thing. Jack White also sorta talked about the press, he just did it in a much more subtle way.

One of my favorite things about the show was how off-the-cuff it seemed. I'm sure Jack had a general feel of what he was planning to do, but seeing him go up to his band members and shouting instructions when he wanted a solo or a new song started was just incredible to watch. A few times it did feel like it was about to fly off the rails, like when the harmonica guy brought the wrong keyed harmonica out, but improvisations were made and the show continued. Also, his talking did seem to be unplanned mostly and from the heart. The blues nod during We're Going To Be Friends had the woman beside me in the pit crying her eyes out and I was getting choked up.

I totally enjoyed this aspect as well. It was so fun to watch him work his magic as "conductor" for the band. It was pretty clear to me that, as Jack has stated, there was no setlist for the show. He typically seemed to confer with the band before each song. Jack has also been noted to give the crowd back what they are giving him. That fact that he played for 2+ hours tells me he was enjoying things just as much as we were.

I'm a fairly recent Jack White fan, as I disliked The White Stripes when they were active (I was fairly young - not sure what I was thinking!) but once Blunderbuss released I started to get real into him. I decided to get pit for this show since I've never gotten pit for What and I felt like this was going to be a pretty great show. And.... IT BLEW MY FUCKING MIND. oh. my. God. That was amazing. Can't wait to pick up his new album and blast it constantly. Already started exclusively listening to Jack related things and learned how to play "We're Going To Be Friends" on the ukulele. He killed it. Anyone who thinks otherwise can go be disappointed by themselves but it rocked my socks off and ain't nobody gonna take that away from me!

Double standard? How in the world is anybody comparing Jack White with Kanye? Give it a break already. Kanye's set went down as one of the worst on the weekend while Jack Whites went down as one of the best EVER. Jack White spoke to us like a human not some deranged lunatic. Most artists, especially headliners, will address the crowd. A 15-20 minute rant during an already shortened set by a headliner is ridiculous. I didn't run into one single person at Bonnaroo that had a single positive thing to say about Kanye's set. The only people raving about the set are the people who were in the pit that are on inforoo. The same people who would've loved it no matter what Kanye did. I heard he was late yet again, even if it was only 10 minutes and then he left 20 minutes early. That means he played/rapped for only 90 minutes while ranting for a decent chunk of that time. Plenty of people I talked to were disappointed by his setlist.
Im glad a lot of Inforooers had a great time at his set. That doesn't mean he should've been a headliner. Out of 80,000+ I wonder how many stayed through the set. I know one thing, the rest of centeroo was very crowded. Way more crowded than when I skipped Jack Johnson last year. If anything Kanye should've been one of the headliners to have a shortened time slot like Lionel Richie. He definitely didn't deserve to be billed #2.
