I thought some of Jack's "talking" was just as awkward as Kanye's. I understand where he was going with the "something better to do" stuff, but I'm not sure he actually articulated it well...just as Kanye's Shakespear/Motzart stuff was also oddly approached. There were some other odd comments by Jack IMO such as his "I'm not trying to bore you" and "Do you want me to play one, two or many more songs" as well as the Rolling Stone stuff. Those things didn't really affect my opinion of the set, but neither did any of Kanye's. Saying Kanye's set was one of the worst of the weekend and/or he shouldn't be a headliner is pretty ridiculous though. I preferred Jack's set because of the kick-ass encore and the much more fan friendly stage setup, but I've got to believe it would take a pre-conceived bias against Kanye (for whatever reason) to completely dislike his set or get completely different takeaways from their dialoge.
I love how Jack White gets to talk as much as he wants and it's considered charming and evidence of it being a special show, while Kanye gets berated and insulted all weekend for doing the same thing.
Double standard? How in the world is anybody comparing Jack White with Kanye? Give it a break already. Kanye's set went down as one of the worst on the weekend while Jack Whites went down as one of the best EVER. Jack White spoke to us like a human not some deranged lunatic. Most artists, especially headliners, will address the crowd. A 15-20 minute rant during an already shortened set by a headliner is ridiculous. I didn't run into one single person at Bonnaroo that had a single positive thing to say about Kanye's set. The only people raving about the set are the people who were in the pit that are on inforoo. The same people who would've loved it no matter what Kanye did. I heard he was late yet again, even if it was only 10 minutes and then he left 20 minutes early. That means he played/rapped for only 90 minutes while ranting for a decent chunk of that time. Plenty of people I talked to were disappointed by his setlist.
Im glad a lot of Inforooers had a great time at his set. That doesn't mean he should've been a headliner. Out of 80,000+ I wonder how many stayed through the set. I know one thing, the rest of centeroo was very crowded. Way more crowded than when I skipped Jack Johnson last year. If anything Kanye should've been one of the headliners to have a shortened time slot like Lionel Richie. He definitely didn't deserve to be billed #2.
This seems like another example of people being led by the media. None of us are close to this matter. I read the Rolling Stones article and don't see what was so wrong about Wayne defending his friend, even if what she did was clearly wrong, which he agreed with. He acknowledged that she was young and immature but that's no reason to unfriend somebody. The better approach would be to help her and give her advice. Wayne said Kliph was fired because he had a record of being hateful and basically just an asshole. This was not the first time he was demeaning to a woman. Wayne recalls times where Kliph referred to women as cum receptacles, as if cunt wasn't bad enough. He finally had enough of his antics.
With all that being said who really knows what happened between these guys(all the details). I had a brief encounter with Wayne and he was incredibly nice and very down to Earth. His girlfriend was a sweetheart too. Maybe it's all an act, who knows. I like to think I'm a decent judge of character when I meet somebody and I definitely felt a good vibe around Wayne. I've met other celebrities and felt the opposite and the fakeness. Wayne was totally engaged in our interaction. Eventually we felt bad for holding him up so we went on our way but it seemed like he would've hung out all night.
I for one am looking forward to their performance. The show they put on Mexico was awesome. They're a top 5 show for me this year.
Message of Kanye's rants: Believe in yourself and you can acquire greatness
Message of Jack White's rants: You're an idiot if you think you have something better to do
wooooowwww. How can you seriously think thats what Jack was trying to say... and how can you use that one small talk as a summary for all he said that night? He was saying to go for things in life. Be spontaneous. Take a chance. Don't pass up opportunities. Why do I have to explain this to an adult? WTF is wrong with these boards? How can people be so soft as to have nothing to talk about other than their sensitivities to the chatter of Kanye and Jack?
Um, you guys realize that Neader was essentially flipping the script of the Kanye thread right? I mean, you can totally come to the two conclusions that he came to in that post if you are completely biased for one of the artists and against the other.
This is my one regret. We left Jack White early to try to catch the superjam because we've always missed them and then hear about how amazing they were. The superjam was late getting on, so we went to Flaming Lips. Great show, though much weirder than usual. Enjoyed it as I do all Flaming Lips shows, but I had no idea what was happening just across the fence line.

Taking one part of Jack White's crowd talk out of context is exactly what people are doing with Kanye West. "I'm going after Walt Disney" came within a minute of "you can only achieve as high as you believe" which is one of the many statements you have to dismiss if you want to say Kanye didn't hope to empower his audience.

I've been steering clear of inforoo after the fest, mainly because logging back in means it's truly over for another year. That makes me sad.
Anyway, I've seen Jack 3 times (all three with The Raconteurs, all pretty great shows), but this was hands down the best set of his I've ever seen. This touring band is just tremendous. Did anyone else catch the point when Jack walked up to his bassist and hummed a bass line to him, which the dude immediately started playing PERFECTLY? Maybe it doesn't take much to amaze me, but that was super cool.
I understand people wanting to rag on Jack for his mini rants, but why bother? Personally, I was right there with him, and I say that as someone that was pretty on board with Kanye's set, too (had a spot right in front the sound booth for both). Jack had something to prove to the people who saw him as a serviceable headliner for a mid major (Gov Ball, Forecastle, etc), but didn't know if he could hold down an unopposed spot a big festival.
I loved every minute of that show. It was probably the best show I've ever seen at Bonnaroo, right in front of last year's Jim James SuperJam. I really hope that I'm not disappointed when he plays a shorter set at Forecastle next month.

Jack White killed it!! I've seen him a few times now and Saturday night blew those times out of the water. He seemed SO into it and loved how into it WE were. I was lucky enough to get into the pit on the left side... if you saw a chick totally raging up front with a flashy, pink bow headband... that was totally me. I completely fangirl'ed out. I couldn't help myself!!
I hate to say it because I love Meg White and The White Stripes, but those WS songs really went some incredible places when he had a legit band to play them with. Hotel Yorba realized as a country blues song was something I won't forget.

Yea, I felt a similar way. As much as I love the White Stripes and as raw as those songs were when it was just the two of them I was ecstatic with the songs being played again but with a full band who are all fully capable of delivering a kickass version. I nearly lost my mind when he started playing Astro. That encore was insane.

Are you trying to make some kind of point with this? Because it doesn't make much sense. People witnessed Kanye's rants and some of the negative interactions with the media from the past have been caught on tape. The exchange between Wayne and Kliph was not at some live performance or even caught on tape. I get that you're a fan of Kanye's but this is an apples to oranges comparison. He has the nerve to say he's the biggest rock star on the planet, seriously? He's the Axl Rose of the rap game, and if he continues his childish antics he'll probably end up like him. And he's coming for Shakespeare and Henry Ford? Talk about delusions of grandeur. It's great to shoot for the stars but patting yourself on the back like you've invented the wheel is crazy. Although I do like Kanye's music I highly doubt he'll ever contribute anything to society that will change the shape of history in any way.
For the record I wasn't one of the people that booed Kanye or even bad mouth him at Bonnaroo, with the exception calling him an asshole to my friends at my camp. I kind of wanted to check him out but I wanted to be up front for the Superjam a lot more.

You're overthinking this. It's a double standard because you're treating Wayne (the white guy, the one who you like) differently than Kanye (the black guy, the one who has the nerve to call himself a "rock star"). When one of them gets negatively portrayed in the media, you bend over backwards to make excuses for his behavior. But then you go and twist Kanye's words in an effort to diminish him as an artist, and perpetuate the bullshit idea that he's just a loud megalomaniac with a microphone. It's fucked up.

They are performers. They communicate with their audience through words and verse.
If half of Kanyes crowd feels like he was being a dick who was saying a lot of self centered bullshit, then he obviously can't communicate well.
Or, it could be that he was being a rockstar with a sense of entitlement and respect because his head is so large it can't even fit on the what stage.
So he was either a bad communicator, or he is a giant dickhead who feels like he deserves to be held up to the same standard as Hendrix and Disney.
Jack White says some offensive things. He talked very little throughout his set, most of the audience heard him and understood his words as uplifting and really connected him to the crowd. He then played an amazing set. Mr. West did not do that. His words, supposed to be motivational or not, offended people. His songs were broken up, restarted, no flow to the show.
thats a real comparison of the two from everything I've read and seen over the last week.

This is another extremely skewed reading of the situation. Nobody is calling Jack White "entitled," or suggesting he should have shown humility in front of such a large crowd. He's a white rock star, he belongs up there, right?

Its seems to me, and this is just an observation, that kanye didn't make any new fans with his performance. If you were a fan before roo, chances are you're still a fan. If you weren't a fan before his performance, chances are his performance didn't do much for you. Whereas I fully believe jack made many new fans with his performance at roo. How could you not be a fan after that show!
disclaimer: I did not see Kanye and haven't watched or listened to any of his show from roo or anywhere else for that matter.

He made a least one new fan. I thought it was an amazing show, went in with no expectations and got a great spot behind the rail of the pit so I wouldn't have my show ruined by chanting and whatnot. And was blown away so much energy from Kanye and the people I was around. Great show and would for sure pay to see him again.

I was going to post the same thing earlier. Jack fans all loved his show, I've only seen one with any complaints. Most Kanye fans loved his show, but I've heard many with complaints. As far as non fans go Jack definitely impressed some people that were not expecting to be that impressed. I haven't seen any examples of Kanye making any new fans or changing anyone's opinion on him. This is why I'm not even sure why the comparison is even happening. One was there with something to prove, something to make up for and he failed at that and possibly even made it worse. Maybe if he just shut his mouth and performed the way his fans know that he can, he have silenced some of the haters and won some people over. Kanye definitely didn't do that. Jack came and did things he hasn't done before, with that 10 song encore 2 1/2 hr. show. He made comments that were a little odd, a little awkward but nothing offensive. But he more than made up for it by his performance going above and beyond.
