Its seems to me, and this is just an observation, that kanye didn't make any new fans with his performance. If you were a fan before roo, chances are you're still a fan. If you weren't a fan before his performance, chances are his performance didn't do much for you. Whereas I fully believe jack made many new fans with his performance at roo. How could you not be a fan after that show!
disclaimer: I did not see Kanye and haven't watched or listened to any of his show from roo or anywhere else for that matter.
I was going to post the same thing earlier. Jack fans all loved his show, I've only seen one with any complaints. Most Kanye fans loved his show, but I've heard many with complaints. As far as non fans go Jack definitely impressed some people that were not expecting to be that impressed. I haven't seen any examples of Kanye making any new fans or changing anyone's opinion on him. This is why I'm not even sure why the comparison is even happening. One was there with something to prove, something to make up for and he failed at that and possibly even made it worse. Maybe if he just shut his mouth and performed the way his fans know that he can, he have silenced some of the haters and won some people over. Kanye definitely didn't do that. Jack came and did things he hasn't done before, with that 10 song encore 2 1/2 hr. show. He made comments that were a little odd, a little awkward but nothing offensive. But he more than made up for it by his performance going above and beyond.
Still discussing Kanye I see. In the Jack White thread of all places
They are performers. They communicate with their audience through words and verse.
If half of Kanyes crowd feels like he was being a dick who was saying a lot of self centered bullshit, then he obviously can't communicate well.
Or, it could be that he was being a rockstar with a sense of entitlement and respect because his head is so large it can't even fit on the what stage.
So he was either a bad communicator, or he is a giant dickhead who feels like he deserves to be held up to the same standard as Hendrix and Disney.
Jack White says some offensive things. He talked very little throughout his set, most of the audience heard him and understood his words as uplifting and really connected him to the crowd. He then played an amazing set. Mr. West did not do that. His words, supposed to be motivational or not, offended people. His songs were broken up, restarted, no flow to the show.
thats a real comparison of the two from everything I've read and seen over the last week.
This is another extremely skewed reading of the situation. Nobody is calling Jack White "entitled," or suggesting he should have shown humility in front of such a large crowd. He's a white rock star, he belongs up there, right?
The way I'm reading it, people are confused on why Jack White got a pass for talking or his off stage demeanor, and Kanye did not. To me its all in how they were communicating on stage.
Their race has no standing on my opinion. I find it strange race is even being brought up.

the only reason Kanye is being discussed in the jack white thread is because someone who, at least it seemed like, doesn't care for jack white came in here and started bashing his show to prove a point about Kanye. I think we would all like to go back to discussing how fucking amazing jacks set was!
oh and btw, Jack Whites set was fucking amazing!! Thinking about getting a Saturday ticket to forecastle just to see him again.

Jack's set was great. Got a lot of the songs that I wanted to hear from his solo albums (High Ball, Lazaretto, Three Women, Freedom at 21, and Sixteen Saltines). Also a couple of my favorite White Stripes songs Ball and a Biscuit and Hardest Button to Button. One of the best guitarist I have seen. Also a really great band, I mean who plays a theremin.

My buddy is a pretty casual music fan. He went into Bonnaroo knowing pretty much Gold Digger and Seven Nation Army. Kanye was in his top 5 performances, Jack White didn't even make the list. I'm not saying this because I thought Kanye was leagues better. I enjoyed both performances greatly for different reasons. I just think using anecdotal evidence is not helpful for the conversation.
In an attempt to keep this thread about Jack White, I've started a new thread that you all can fill up with your comparisons about Jack White and Kanye West.
I vote we get back to crushing on the Saturday set instead of comparing it to an act of a completely different genre.
And also, I'd like more dissection of the new album since we only had a few days with it before the party.
Thanks kids. Make Kern proud.
The new album is growing on me, just like Blunderbuss did, which is weird because I've previously just fallen head over heels in love with his previous bands' efforts. There are some weaker points, but Just One Drink, Three Women, and Lazaretto are pretty much perfect. With his previous bands, you knew EXACTLY what you were getting, whether it was garage rock, alt/bluegrass, or whatever. He seems to not want to stick to one genre for an entire album here, and it's a bit jarring to me at first.
That said, I listened to Jack White's stuff (new and old) pretty much the entire drive home on Monday.

See, I fell in love with Blunderbuss right away. So much so, that while I normally do a start to finish thing when I listen to a new album, I stopped at each song for a 2nd and 3rd. And with Lazaretto, I was able to do it all in one sitting. This is the only reason I enjoy the first album from solo JW more.

I do think that Blunderbuss is the better overall record, but I think Lazaretto has better stand out tracks. So there's that.

ok. I'll give you most of that. But the track Blunderbuss remains my favorite out of both of them.

That's cool but that's the first one I've heard of. Does your friend favor hip hop? Was he in a better spot or maybe even a better mindset for Kanye? There are lots of factors that go into how much you enjoy a show. I'm not hating on anyone that enjoyed the show at all. I said beforehand that he would put on a great show for the people that were there to see him. Sounds like for the most part he did but he also did things that even those people were not into. The most rational account of his show was custeph who is a fan but isn't crazy with it. She said the first part of the show was the most exciting thing she's ever seen at roo but that the more he talked and autotuned it just fell apart. All I'm saying is if he didn't do that it could have been a great show for everyone there and we would just be talking about idiots that don't even post here that kept up the fuck Kanye stuff even after he killed it. The fact is he left door open for those people when he had a chance to slam it shut. You know who slammed it shut? Jack White.

There were plenty of us who were even more enthralled by those auto-tuned rants though.

Dammit sang_xcx, leave me out of this. I am already on record saying it was one of my favorite shows of the weekend. Even with the talking & autotuning. I enjoyed JW, but I enjoyed KW more. So there, throw some stones my way. I'm ready for it.

I was using you as an example of a rational Kanye fan. Don't make me take it back haha.
Are you trying to make some kind of point with this? Because it doesn't make much sense. People witnessed Kanye's rants and some of the negative interactions with the media from the past have been caught on tape. The exchange between Wayne and Kliph was not at some live performance or even caught on tape. I get that you're a fan of Kanye's but this is an apples to oranges comparison. He has the nerve to say he's the biggest rock star on the planet, seriously? He's the Axl Rose of the rap game, and if he continues his childish antics he'll probably end up like him. And he's coming for Shakespeare and Henry Ford? Talk about delusions of grandeur. It's great to shoot for the stars but patting yourself on the back like you've invented the wheel is crazy. Although I do like Kanye's music I highly doubt he'll ever contribute anything to society that will change the shape of history in any way.
For the record I wasn't one of the people that booed Kanye or even bad mouth him at Bonnaroo, with the exception calling him an asshole to my friends at my camp. I kind of wanted to check him out but I wanted to be up front for the Superjam a lot more.
You're overthinking this. It's a double standard because you're treating Wayne (the white guy, the one who you like) differently than Kanye (the black guy, the one who has the nerve to call himself a "rock star"). When one of them gets negatively portrayed in the media, you bend over backwards to make excuses for his behavior. But then you go and twist Kanye's words in an effort to diminish him as an artist, and perpetuate the bullshit idea that he's just a loud megalomaniac with a microphone. It's fucked up.
This has nothing to do with race. Did you happen to miss the part where I compared Kanye to Axl Rose? There's nothing wrong with being a rock star, but why does he have to tell us he's one? If he's the biggest rock star on the planet then why does he need to point that out? Btw, I listen to Kanye way more than Jack White or the Flaming Lips. I just don't care for his childish, negative, and angry behavior. Wayne is the opposite. I had a great experience when I met him and enjoyed his hour long interview on the solar stage where he even defended mr. West. Wayne's the type of guy to hug a stranger. Kanye's the kind of guy that scoffs at people and sticks his nose up. He's used social media plenty to just rip on people he sees around him. He comes off as very insecure. Making fun of the way people dress? Ridiculous.

My brother and I attended a deck party last Saturday. We convinced everyone a great idea would be to set up a projector screen on the deck and watch the entire Jack White show! BRILLIANT IDEA! It was such a great idea I might start carrying the projector screen to every cookout and party I attend from now on! Might try and set up the Trucks Superjam for a July 4th party.

From COS:
With each concert behind Lazaretto, Jack White finds a way to one up himself. Last night in Chicago, he played an astonishing 33-song setlist that included covers, live debuts, and an 11-song encore. When it was all said and done, the concert lasted nearly three-hours and marked the longest performance of White’s career.
Among the highlights, the performance of The White Stripes’ “Blue Orchid” in seven years, the live debut of Lazaretto track “Entitlement”, and covers of Jimi Hendrix Experience’s “Manic Depression”, Bob Dylan’s “Tell Me That It Isn’t True”, and Robert Johnson’s “Stones in My Passway”. Per the above photo, he also went into the crowd and, once again, plucked out a fan to accompany him for “Seven Nation Army”.
See the full setlist and video of the “Seven Nation Army” performance below.
Setlist: High Ball Stepper Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground (The White Stripes) Lazaretto Missing Pieces / The Big Three Killed My Baby (The White Stripes) Hotel Yorba (The White Stripes) You Know That I Know I Cut Like a Buffalo (The Dead Weather) The Same Boy You’ve Always Known (The White Stripes) Three Women The Rose With a Broken Neck Freedom at 21 Cannon (The White Stripes) / Catfish Blues (Robert Petway cover) / Got My Mojo Workin’ (Muddy Waters cover) Sixteen Saltines Astro (The White Stripes) Stones In My Passway (Robert Johnson cover) Blunderbuss / Tell Me That It Isn’t True (Bob Dylan) We’re Going to Be Friends (The White Stripes) Entitlement Top Yourself (The Raconteurs)
Encore: Fell in Love With a Girl (The White Stripes) Icky Thump (The White Stripes) Manic Depression (The Jimi Hendrix Experience cover) Steady, As She Goes (The Raconteurs) Blue Orchid (The White Stripes) You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You’re Told) (The White Stripes) The Hardest Button to Button (The White Stripes) Just One Drink Ball and Biscuit (The White Stripes) / Got My Mojo Workin’ Seven Nation Army (The White Stripes)
Listened to this on the live stream - it was pretty ridiculous. I was planning on going but sold my tickets, because I figured it couldn't top the Roo performance, which I still don't think it did.
I'm planning on going to the Masonic Temple show in Detroit which should be a great one since it's his hometown and that venue means a lot to him.
Jack's been going on such a freaking tear lately! Shit's always popping up in my newsfeed about him covering Kanye or Jay-Z, now Jimi...he's really going above and beyond to define himself as a top-tier artist that delivers awesome shows.
