Yay Knoxville! I still don't understand how we have a pro-gay rights female mayor who is currently running unopposed for a second term, but I'm not questioning it.
Needless to say, there are some champions dropping truth bombs on social media. Despite them doing the bridge up in orange & white regularly during football season, two nights of rainbow lights are when the city is fucking up in spending the "thousands upon thousands of dollars" on changing the light colors. Other gems include:
"don't get me started on their symbol....it upsets me and hurts my heart that Gods reminder/promise has been stolen for this!" (I love that one. No marriage for the gays and apparently, they can't have rainbows either.)
"Great!! now Knoxville can be just like Asheville nothing better than a bunch of lesbian Liberals driving Subaru's" (Subaru's what? You can't just leave me hanging like that!)
"I hope tha bridge falls"
"I am sure there will be an astronomical divorce rate in the near future!!!"
"Remove those lights or seeing how it is offending me I just may have to a a lawyer about this." (I love the people saying rainbow flags are the equivalent of the Confederate flag.)

I sometimes want to sit down with people like that, and just see what in their life led them towards such a path of hate.
But I quickly change my mind, because just listening to them would make my head pound.

A hardware store owner/Baptist minister in Grainger County (you may know the place for their tomatoes) has decided to stand up for his beliefs since the homosexuals have. Good luck with that, sir.
god i'm so glad my state is better than all of yours
To be fair, it's just one guy in a very rural county. Not indicative of the state at large. I was just reading an article that states only seven counties in the state are currently not issuing marriage licenses to same sex couple. Six are reportedly due to technical glitches with only one county (Smith) refusing to issue marriage licenses to anyone due to "religious" reasons. That percentage is pretty solid for Tennessee and was probably significantly impacted by our Republican governor coming out quickly after the ruling and saying Tennessee is abiding by the ruling because the Supreme Court is the Supreme Court regardless of whether you like the decision or not.

That's definitely part of it for sure. But I've met people that despise their parents/families racist attitudes. So it's not the only thing.
My Dad was such a racist it made me dig deeper into the whole concept of race at a young age. It made me find that aside from cultural differences, we are all one at our core.. The issue was more Economic if anything in his case. His racism came from black families moving out of Philly into his historically white neighborhood. It was the older folks that were angry at change, but it was the teens in that town starting race violence and setting trolley tracks as a segregation line after sunset.
LGBT is different. Its the monster in the night to these ignorant people. They cant immediately identify a LGBT person and it scares the shit out of them. They claim they don't know or tolerate gays, but statistics say that these LGBT individuals are involved in all our daily lives. That scares the shit out of them. They are afraid because their are more people that are free to be themselves in this country than live the classic American life, fed to the masses in the 40s-50s, that molded America with a white picket fence around the yard and a Bible on the nightstand. Combine that with what these people think is God's Fact vs. Theological Fiction and the whole world looks like its going straight into the fire real quick.

This is a great post. I think you make some really valid, thought-provoking points - and while I agree that racism can often manifest more quickly/automatically (i.e. white person sees non-white person, immediately demonstrates racism because they can visibly perceive the other's non-whiteness) than homophobia since one cannot simply look at an LGBTQ individual and assert them as such, people sure as hell can look at someone and say "well s/he looks gay/queer/trans/etc. and I'm going to act accordingly." Both homophobia and racism can be loud, blatant, and come forth immediately by way of fear, self-doubt/lack of feeling of self-worth (projection is a very real thing!!!), and full on ignorance.

Guess what abrakapokus's favorite car of all time is.
She's in good company! An Outback is basically my dream car, but they are so freakin' expensive.
True facts. When the car hunt was on, Subarus would jump out when we saw them on the lot, but they were all so pricey. They hold their resale value so well.
My sister really wants a new car and laments buying a Subaru because "we decided we'd keep this one until it dies, which will be forever because it's a Subaru. We should have made a poorer decision five years ago."
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

Yeah, she's probably got a long way to go.
Incidentally, I've been driving my Hyundai for 12 years now. I'm pretty sure the end can't be too far in the future, but I'm going to milk it for every last mile it has in it.

And Jason Isbell just shared an article about this guy on his social media drawing special attention to the store's phone number. This ought to be fun.

He will probably end up with 100k in kickstarter money from a bunch of supportive bigots, that's how this seems to end up now a days.

Only one county isn't on board now, and they should be as soon as they fix a software issue. The county clerk for Smith County apparently changed course when someone from Nashville called her to let her know that she could get sued for refusing to issues licenses and that she would lose the suit.

Awww. Poor girl. Maybe she should go here and get cheered up?
One of my childhood friends posted an article about how gay marriage is going to take away her guns.
She was promptly deleted.
I get what you're thinking here. I really do, and I struggle with it too, but wouldn't it be better to try to have a private chat with folks that you disagree with so that they may gain some sort of understanding of why you think the way you do? Especially if you shared some sort of positive bond with them at some point in your life? At the same time, if we don't listen to people and try to understand where they're coming from and why they think the way they do, improvements will be much slower. The best way to change a situation is to run straight towards it, in my O, but it's just that, an opinion.
I know that some folks won't agree with me on this and that's fine. I've just tried this in recent years and it's worked surprisingly well. You'll never get someone to admit that they're wrong in a conversation, but you end up planting seeds. And sometimes, you get seeds planted in you as well (I'm not talking about this topic specifically).
Either way, I have had success by not writing people off because of their beliefs, and instead, calmly approaching them about why I think they're better than "that". Most of the time it's just that they are living their lives and the haven't experienced some of the things that have made me feel the way I do.
EDIT: I try to be pretty light on here, but lately Mrs. Clause has been on my case about being so silly all the time, so I thought I'd throw this out there. Feel free to rip me apart at the seams if you must.

Id try to have a conversation with her, but it wouldn't get through. Id just get called a socialist or something. She fights dirty even when there is no fight to be had. She's also someone I've been meaning to cut loose for a while.
