Yeah I hear you on that. There are bound to be some rock v nola v electronica conflicts particularly in the afternoons. A lot of times, I'd find myself wandering Voodoo searching out random unknown ****. For whatever reason, the midcard is petty stacked this time. For instance, Griz (who is my favorite dj) is only listed as the 11th DJ on the list. Based on the consensus above and assuming there are no further, major adds, we will probably see Outkast mostly unopposed Friday, Foo Fighters mostly unopposed Saturday and arctic monkeys vs skrillex on Sunday night. So that leaves Zedd and Pretty Lights likely taking up the edm prime spots which would be Calvin Harris last year Friday and/or the Big G or Afrojack sets on Saturday. Im guessing Slayer will oppose one of them, hopefully Zedd, since I'm not missing any of Slaya bra. I'm assuming you know the major top few lines so I will ignore them. From what I either know or looked up (some might be slightly off) here are some mid and lower card acts that I would mention.
Action Bronson- rapper from NYC (queens I think) I last saw at Buku 2013. He is the antithesis of a vanilla ice white guy rapper. His fans are mostly guys but not at the jugalo level. He is known to walk through the crowd partying with them as he raps.
Shorty and Orleans Ave- NOLA Supafunkrock with spectacular musicians who play everything from in your face funk to rock, jazz and r&b. they pretty much represent the city as it is today.
Melvins- an old dirge punk band since the early 80s.
Griz - DJ sax player who often works with other scene people (big g, grammatik) who is a little dancier than most edm I listen to, but he is a blast.
Bo Ningen- Japanese punk metal. I am looking forward to this based on YouTube. I think they are guys in dresses (?) but they are hard.
Flow Tribe is the next local band that will probably make it big after Revivalists. They play mostly funkier stuff and are pretty good. I wish they would drop the gimmicky leisure suits they were in last time I saw them since they don't need gimmicks. But I assume that pulls in the chicks.
Big Freedia- if you haven't seen her, it's always a treat. I've probably seen her 10 times. The last show I caught was at Buku 2014. I like her old stuff like azz everywhere, I got that gin in my system, go Duffy, double it etc more than the new album, but this is definitely a don't miss if you have never seen the Queen diva. Even if you have a conflict, you need to swing by this for 10-15 minutes. My boy's gf had never even heard of her (bayou chick) before Buku but came away thinking it was the best show of the weekend. Fwiw, and buku ruled this year (lotus, griz, explosions, beats antique, flaming lips, dj snake, conspirator, etc) , I had the Freedia set in my top 10.
There is a lot of worthy other local stuff like Soul Rebels, Bonearama and Rebirth who is always great. There are some older 80s and 90s bands such as Fuel and Fishbone. There are some intriguing EuropeAn Djs I haven't seen yet, Fedde Le Grande (Dutch house I think), Congorock (Italian), Pete Tong who is an old BBC producer, and Thomas Gold who is German.
I'll check more stuff out as it gets closer, as people offer recommendations and once they finalize any more adds. But this has a shot at being one of the overall higher level Voodoos across genres than they have done in a while. I've seen most of the higher rated acts but have plans to probably (likely) split a bunch of low and mid card sets.
Esteban knows what he's talking about. Def check out Freedia......that shit has me lol'ing everytime. First time I saw shim was at Voodoo '09, had no idea what I walked up on. We need to meet up at Voodoo and throw down, Esteban. Longinus and I know what we're doin'.
EAGLESKYLINE- There were a buncha aftershows last year, moreso than the past couple of years since Widespread Panic was doing a 3-night run. Last year I did the Reignwolf latenight at the HOB Parish Room, which only had like 25 people there, it was awesome.
Next night we did the "Monsters of Funk" or something like that, superjam at the Howlin' Wolf. GREAT show. Local songs and funk standards for the most part with people like George Porter Jr., June Yamagishi (epic nola guitar player), Eric Krasno etc
This year will have a massive drop in jamband/party people in town since Panic is in Colorado, so there is no telling what kind of night shows will be going on. There will most definitely be large DJ shows if that's what you're into. Def some funky stuff on Frenchmen street. Rock at HOB & a few other venues.
I'm hopin' to check out some new venues this Halloween, in particular the Little Gem Saloon which people kept telling me was great during Jazzfest this year.
Thanks Sarge. You know it's always a riot when any of the bounce divas are on stage (Freedia, Katey Red, Sissy Nobby, Cheeky Blakk, etc.). But Freedia is pretty hard working. I remember seeing her for the Black Diamond Affair back in January 2011 or January 2012 at House of Blues, where she got up on stage and rapped with the 8th and 9th Ward Boys who are pretty ghetto. Yet Freedia stood head and shoulders out. That's when I knew her rap accumen was there besides just the entertaining side-show element. Cheeks are always clapping at those shows.
Longinus,
Great news there. Moon Taxi is one of my favorite up and coming bands. I saw them at Voodoo last year and felt like they were 2 or 3 years away from sub-headliner status. I dug the RATM set at Hangout, and they were absolutely ear-splittingly loud and bass-y at Wakarusa. So I'll probably go check that show out. And from what I've watched on Youtube on DFA 1979, I'm pretty excited for that show too.
Agreed. I didn't so much mind the accessibility of the stages, as you could get anywhere at the fest in 5 minutes. And the central location of some of the food squares made that really accessible. But the problem with sound bleed was bad. I don't mind getting blasted with bass if I'm at the electronica stage. But if I'm watching a blues singer or an acoustic or brass set or something, I don't want to hear that. At the old location, they just put the electronic stage all the way at the other end, so you really only got the bleed if you were somewhere in the middle of the festival grounds rather than being at a completely separate stage. I'm not sure what they can do about it besides re-orienting that stage away from all other stages to where maybe the back of Le Pleur faces into Voodoo Grounds and the front faces North or whatever. Then again, I'm not a sound engineer. They were able to redo Buku this year by moving the later stuff in-doors after all the whining people up, across and downriver did in 2013. And supposedly there were only minimal complaints this year. I guess they could build some type of enclosure, but with the obvious draw of EDM in today's festival world, some of those sets have the most people watching. So that probably wouldn't work unless it was some type of overhead and behind aparatus that directed the soundwaves toward the listening audience rather than just letting them blast through everything. There is only so much room at the fest, so if it ends up being that they just need to crank the electronica down a few decibels, I'd be about that too. Live Nation has unlimited money, and I'm sure they'll get 20k people a day this year, so hopefully they heard our complaints about the bleed last year and are working on it.
That soundbleed was so annoying, and was such an embarassment. Seeing Dr. John's face of disgust in between songs because of Assnectar made me so angry. I'm VIP this year so I'll be able to get close and hopefully not have an issues.
20K seems like a pretty low estimate.
I wonder how many people were at Voodoo when Rage played. I didn't go the year Tool played, which I've heard was a monster crowd, but Rage was def the biggest crowd I've ever seen at Voodoo. Had to be at least 80K.

It probably is low, but I honestly have no idea. Though they might, I don't recall them releasing attendance numbers the last several years. I would assume it fluctuates from year to year like Jazzfest, and also like Jazzfest, I don't know if they ever really sell it out. Truth is, I'm fairly new to Voodoo. I caught the 92 & 93 Lollapoloozas, but after that, I had 3 kids and a night-shift nurse wife. So there wasn't really an opportunity to go out and see a ton of live stuff outside of the occasional trip to French Quarter Fest or couldn't miss show. So the first time I actually went was in 2010 when a buddy of mine who was playing the fest Friday loaned me his all access band, and I went and saw Street Sweepers Social Club and Ozzy (bra). I had such a great time, that I kicked myself in the *** knowing all those great lineups that I just kind of ignored but should have been at. By 2011, my oldest (who is a big Soundgarden fan) and I went all 3 days and vowed we would never miss another one again. My other 2 made it for the first time last year and were blown away. So we're all in forever or as long as we are here. It's an "On Daddy" fest, so the pre-sale $110 or whatever is a steal from my point of view. Jabco talks a lot about how much he loved the dueling stage sets (ala 2010) where you could just turn around and watch the next major performer. I'm not sure if they'll bring that back or not just because of how diverse they're trying to make it. Even then, it was like Drake, Street Sweeper then Ozzy which were all completely different styles. Seems as though, like Hangout and Jazzfest, they are kind of tailoring the stages for specific sounds (if that makes sense).
We need to meet up at Voodoo and throw down, Esteban. Longinus and I know what we're doin'.
For sure. I am usually wandering around with Jabco, his old lady, my kids or random other people who I run into that I know. I remember meeting and shaking hands with somebody from here with him a couple of years ago, longer reddish hair if I remember correctly. We live about 10 blocks away from City Park, so we generally just walk to Wits Inn around the corner and grab one of their 32 oz cocktails for $9.00 for the walk down N. Carrollton. Jabco and his old lady parked by the house and rode their bikes I think. But yeah, holler at me down the road, and we'll hook it up. I was going for the fall trifecta with ACL, VOODOO and Bear Creek, but I'm not enthralled enough with ACL now that both weekends are sold out to spend the extra money on tickets. I was mostly considering for upper-mid and midcarder stuff I hadn't seen yet (Broken Bells, Replacements, Jimmy Cliff {who I unfortunately had to miss at Deluna}, St. Vincent) and then Pearl Jam who is always great and even Eminem who I also haven't seen yet. But I've seen the majority of the rest of the lineup, and I don't think it will be worth the likely $400+ (x 2 or 3) it would take plus the travel days. So after Pass the Good in Pensacola and Mad Decent NOLA next month, we'll probably just do VOODOO and Bear Creek. I'm actually pretty psyched up about Bear Creek. This will be my first time going to Spirit of Suwannee. Based on light research, probably Aura would be my favorite lineup or festival there (though this year's Wanee lineup looked mostly awesome), but since I love the funk, Bear Creek should do just fine. I understand they are supposed to be releasing more headliners and lower card acts this week. I've seen Umphrey's 3x this year, Lettuce at Waka, Dumpstaphunk at Hogs for the Cause, Break Science and Orgone this year. I'm jacked to see Budos Band who are new to me.
The dueling stages setup was f'n awesome. Raver mess over in the lil tent where it was nice and sketchy was great. I just don't like the festival grounds they use. I like the old location, with all the oak trees and everything. It was just a way better vibe.
I did Voodoo 02, 03, 07-13. Was broke for '04 and was planning on buying at the gate for '05 but becaue of Katrina they only let ppl that already had tickets and first responders in. I'm sure I could have gotten in but I didn't want to risk it. No legit reason for not going in '06. I didn't do many shows while I was in college because of money but I would always try to make it to Voodoo.
This is my first time doing voodoo. I always have fun in nola, usually just at the house of blues. Pretty excited for Rise Against an Manchester Orchestra. Been listening to griz never heard of him before but it sounds pretty cool. You all have talked me into catching some of big freedia. I listened to a little an didn't care for it, but I imagine a live show is pretty cool. I'd like to see skrillex again but if they oppose arctic monkeys I gotta miss it, I was mad at myself for not leaving my tent at roo.

You'll have to trust us on this. Bounce Rap is vulgar, crude, loud, brash and everything rock and roll is supposed to be. It is a super fun hyper-NOLA genre straight out of the projects, in the case of Freedia, means 3rd Ward Josephine Street. Sissy Bounce, her particular sub genre, did not initially enjoy a lot of respect among black guys for obvious reasons. But once they found out the audiences were 90+% female, they couldn't hate on it anymore. Eventually bounce crept into white culture and is widely accepted by teens and 20-somethings today where instead of just a sideshow, the shows are always packed.

The perfect way for you to have seen bounce jroo would've been last year during Beats Antique when Katey Redd came out. Live bounce music and short/sweet. Freedia will still be a good time if you know what you're getting yourself into; there will probably be no conflicts. if Jazzfest can get 5th Ward Weebie, Voodoo should, rofl.
Sgt. Blotter holds it down for the N.O. I've browsed but never posted here since my first Roo 2 years ago. Mostly to see rumors for Roo, Jazzfest, and Voodoo, and he's all over them. Generally they're more accurate than anywhere else; people called The Cure last year, and guessed a good part of this lineup. I'm definitely not convicned that the Arctic Monkeys are headliners. I love them and really liked the Roo Show and ACL (where they were 2nd sub-headliner). They may be at Lolla, but that's with multiple 'headliners' playing each day. Plus they're after Skrillex on the lineup. Some people thought Nectar was a headliner too. Then they added the Cure. They add Jack White late in 2012... And wasn't Blink (terrible show, btw) a late headliner add too? I see a trend. I've heard a lot of Chili Peppers rumors. Beck's another one !!! But I don't think they'll repeat two ACL headliners since we've got 'Kast. I really just hope they don't go Linkin Park; they're touring with 30 Seconds to Mars.
I had to finally get on here after seeing esteban's posts though. Between the DeLuna love and liking Go Duffy by Freedia it was obvious who it was. Haha. You like Bear Creek's additions? I think their other lineups had a little more oomph...Not Umph. It's either Bear Creek, FFF, or blowing money on Sir Paul and NIN/Soundgarden in the Woodlands for me.
Katey with Beats at Buku was awesome (came out last year at Voodoo as well I think). Everett got video of her at Buku ("...No I don't give a ****, I don't give a ****. No I don't give a ****...") but it's so shakey I didn't jack it from him an upload to Youtube. Also been hearing the RHCP/LP/Beck rumors, but I'm not sure they are going to add anyone at that level - though obviously they could. There was an interview with the producer regarding Cure and Kid Rock accepting last year and both were kind of after the fact if I remember the story.
As for the Bear Creek Additions, like I said in that thread, there wasn't anything earth shattering to me, but there is a lot of stuff I haven't seen yet. I guess the Floozies initially are my favorite add, but there are a bunch of other bands and acts I will have to research (also some that were already on the card). FFF would be ideal, but we're going to try to do that next year after being prodded for the last 5 years to do it. And you know Soundgarden and NiN will be outrageous (saw SG in Austin last year and NiN at VOODOO). I'd probably do Austin rather than Woodlands, but it's another couple hours down the road. And with still having to go to Pass the Good, Mad Decent, Voodoo and Bear Creek (as well as all those hardcore shows coming up at Siberia), I gotta save some $$$. Next year, though, looks to be Buku, Jazzfest 1st Weekend (will be in ATX 2nd weekend), Hangout, Wakarusa VIP because of how great that is, Bonnaroo VIP just to see if it rates, Fun Fun Fun and Voodoo. I might try Aura in 2016 if I like Suwannee, because for my money, that's one of my favorite lineups this year (loving the progressive (mostly) instrumental scene happening - Lotus, Papadosio, Conspirator) and I thought the few minutes of Dopapod I saw at Waka blew me away as one of the most surprising shows of that weekend to me of stuff I'd never seen before.
Foo Fighters Outkast Arctic Monkeys (possibly bumped by an add)
Le Plur headliners:
Skrillex Zedd Pretty Lights
I wonder who will conflict with who? I'd like to see all of the mainstage headliners, but if Pretty Lights was during AM I might do PL instead. Zedd I don't care about.
Yeah, that whole EDM/Le Plur Stage this year is being sponsored by an electronic promoter out of Los Angeles known as HARD. Unfortunately I can't find the announcement/news article/press release thing they did. I'm wondering if they are on Live Nation's "Takeover" radar. I'm assuming that Hard's involvement is why the mid-card for EDM this year is higher-end than I expected.
There will be another announcement probably in mid-August. I'm thinkin' they are gonna add a heavy hitter headliner as well as Judas Priest to the undercard, along with probably 15-20 additional artists.
They're gonna have to do something to stand out from that Life is Beautiful fest in Vegas the weekend before as that will def cut into their ticket sales.
Cabs are easy out of city park, there is a dedicated line for cabs, that can be pretty long but you'll def be able to get one. An easy trick is to walk through the cab line and as you get close to the front start yelling and see if anyone is going to where you are going and split the cab with them and cut the line.
It's really easy to get cabs in most parts of NOLA, except Tipitinas at like 4am hahaha
I'm already pretty happy about the lineup, but that would be something if Priest got added. That's a band I never saw. I don't know what they play anymore, but some of those early albums like Sad Wings of Destiny, Sin After Sin, Stained Class etc were great. I know Suicidal Tendencies is on tour with Slayer, so if we could get them too, my voodoo would be getting even harder than already planned. Shit I might have to dust off some old black tshirts. Are we below last year's final number of acts, because I'm wondering with that 4 stage alignment, how many acts could actually fit into 3 days.
Fwiw, tommy ramone died. That leaves no originals. All those fiux died young. I guess the only saving grace for me is I never was into glue. RIP
