I just don't get that. I don't see how someone can hold such a silly grudge like that for so long
It's not just about the 2008 fiasco. I didn't go that year. But I can guarantee you that I won't go see Kanye if I go this year. I have no interest at all. Just like I had no interest in seeing Eminem a couple years ago. Some people have listened to his music and think he sucks. Others haven't listened and think he sucks strictly on his abrasive persona. It doesn't mean they're wrong. If you like him, it doesn't mean you're right. To each their own, but you gotta understand that he's probably the most divisive headliner that Bonnaroo has ever gotten, then and now. So people will be highly disappointed at what they see as a wasted headliner spot. It is what it is. One headliner does not make or break a Roo. Be happy or don't, Bonnaroo will get their money either way.
Not only is it a wasted headliner spot to me, but I'm afraid now that booking kanye will bleed too much of this years talent budget. I'm worried that the undercard will be subpar this year as a result.

Paul McCartney probably costs double what Kanye West cost, and they were still able to put together a pretty solid undercard last year.

I wish Roo would go a different route, but I will be at the show to see whats up. However, last time I went to a Kanye show just to see whats up was 08 Roo. haha I guess its time for a second chance. Also, I hope this doesn't make us lose Outkast.
This poll is missing an obvious choice, depends on schedule conflicts. If he's the Saturday night headliner, I'd probably go to his set and leave early for a good spot at the superjam. Personally, I'm not a big fan of hip hop shows unless I can be close so I'll probably leave fairly early. If he's not headlining then it definitely depends on the conflicts in the schedule.
I really don't get all the hate from 08 either, that just seems unhealthy to hold a grudge that long. I'm a fan of his music but he's not a must see for me.
I am going to go see the show hopefully he learned his lesson after all that is what life is all about and like Phi said maybe give an amazing performance after all that is what life is all about I do like his music and bump it in the car some of his stuff is really good some it is like WTF? Now outside of the studio is a real wildcard with him you never know what he is going to do he is an artist and good art is usually controversial art secretly I am hoping he goes into one of his rambles to address what happened last time and maybe apologize a lot the sarcastic negativity on this board revolves around the "incident" I was there and it sucked big time but I went to some other stuff and went back when I was tired and headed back to Pod 1 where I got put that year anyway my opinion really does not matter everyone has there own and despite a good performance or bad one people will show up and something will be written about it and it will be talked about for a long time after I welcome this as an opportunity to form my own opinion in the matter we go for epic shit either a performance or melt down is in the cards and that is truly a spectacle.
1-1-12 Bassnectar NYE SHOW! 1-21-12 G. Love and Special Sauce 3-1-12 Radiohead 3-9-12 Experience Hendrix 5-15-12 Jack White @ The Ryman 6-7-12 Bonnaroo 6-19-12 Roger Waters presents "THE WALL" 7-7-12 Ringo Starr's 72nd Birthday Party Extravaganza at the Ryman

I would say Paul has to be the most expensive headliner they ever booked. He brought his own screens for What for cripes sake.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.
I'm not saying this to stir any pots, I just want to jump in and say that I don't think it's absurd to be a little weary of Kanye after 2008. I'm not ever going to say holding a grudge is a good thing but imagine how you would feel if you waited almost the entire day to get a good spot for this amazing show, and you can't enjoy it cause the sun has come up? Imagine you passed on a couple of bands you were really excited about to see Kanye, only to see a sub-par show where he barely engaged the crowd.
A lot of you are avid music fans and you see shows all the time, for some people Bonnaroo is their entire music fund. They won't always get the luxury skipping Band A to see Band B because Band A is touring in their city the next month. Occasionally its a one time shot, so those conflicts are major!
In 2008 I was fortunate enough to see all the bands I wanted and then stroll over to Kanye afterwards, get bored with waiting and walk back to camp. My feelings weren't hurt because I didn't lose out on anything. But some people spent an entire day waiting for nothing.
I'm not saying don't be excited for Kanye, I'm not saying we should run around shouting "fuck Kanye", just maybe try to understand why people are a little jaded and refrain from ostracizing them...
These boards are so mean sometimes
One show. He's played dozens and dozens of shows since then without a repeat incident. He's a professional, he was a professional well before he became a rapper, people just like the easy explanation and for some that's "Kanye was a meanie meanface jerkhead and deliberately screwed ME over!" (this isn't directed at you personally, I'm just speaking generally).
If someone were at the '08 show and have a sour taste in your mouth? Fine. But they should absolutely go to his show at Roo. I listen to pretty much every kind of music there is, I live in NYC and go to dozens of concerts every year, Kanye's current show is a spectacle. It's more akin to seeing a Broadway play than a regular concert. He plays Yeezus, old stuff, he has actors, dancers, chapters (seriously), a magnificent and gigantic LCD screen that lights up like a sun. Videos online don't do it justice, if someone lets a bad experience 6 years prior stop them from going and experiencing this unique show, they're only hurting themselves. I want people to go and see the guy sweating, panting and exhausted from putting everything he has into his performance (which he does).
I won't be at Roo, but I truly hope people don't just skip it out of spite. It's worth seeing even if you're not a big fan of his music.

Kanye probably isn't even the most expensive headliner they have this year.

Yeah, but does he have a castle?
I just envisioned a Gaga/Yeezy combo show with a mountain and a castle and god fucking dammit I want this so badly now.
I just don't understand why people were so quick to welcome back Trey Anastasio after his 2005 late night set where he was high as a kite on oxy and put on one of the shittiest shows in Bonnaroo memory. Or why nobody rolls around yelling "fuck Bootsy." That kind of thing.
I was there for the 08 debacle, but that's not really my reason for not wanting to see him. Basically, I just don't like him. I don't like rap, and I especially hate Kanye's personality. I think I have only watched two rap sets at roo. Kanye and Snoop. Both were awkward, and I was bored as shit. Oh wait, Eminem was actually really good.
That said, he would be a headliner, so everyone I was with would likely want to go, including my gf. If it were just me, I'd go chill at the Miller stage and watch a good up and coming band.
I've never been a fan of him, mostly because it's just not the kind of music I like to listen to. That being said, if he's actually there, I'd probably at least check it out because I heard he puts on quite a show (or has for his new tour and stuff lately)
If this happens, I'm totally at Kanye's set. I love his music. I definitely understand the frustrations that people have based off of what I have read about his appearance in 2008. Not trying to say it's ok but when your dealing with Kanye West, you have to expect some kind of controversy. If he can start close to on time if he headlines this year, I definitely think he has it in him to make up for last time.

Dave Maynar, sitting under a tree with you and CPK at the Other Tent and watching people expecting Earl Sweatshirt walk up to a rescheduled DIIV show was one of the best memories from last year. Sooooo much confusion, haha.
And absolutely, JHOinTN, if Kanye is there I will find a way to be there for it!
I feel like there should be another corollary added on to my avatar theory, one which involves the manner in which any particular poster reacts to Kanye West.
Care to share? I'm genuinely interested, I must have missed it the first time around.
Although if you're paying ~$300 + expenses to go to Bonnaroo and you don't see Kanye, an unopposed headliner, then you're probably an idiot.
Fair point, but headliners aren't technically unopposed. Miller Lounge Stage has a band playing.
As I've said in the past, one of my favourite bands played opposite RHCP when they headlined. If it wasn't for the fact that they were playing again the next day, and I had never seen RHCP before, I would have been there instead for sure. If it had have been the next night, and they played opposite Radiohead, I would have been at the Miller Lounge.(not baiting anyone for a Radiohead debate, just not my thing)

I will not forget the girl whose response to finding out he had cancelled was "OH MY GOD! I AM SO FUCKED!" followed by her running away from the stage.
