I live like 20 minutes away. We've had scattered showers lately, but nothing lasting all day. They last a few minutes and then they're gone. It's nearly impossible to predict Tennessee weather though lol
Everyone chill the fuck out. Jesus you're saying it is too far to predict when we see nice forcasts and then when it says rain you are all saying oh fuck bring a poncho gonna be a shit storm. Chill the fuck out and wait.
We had about 18 hours of crazy heavy rain at Floydfest last year and it was nuts. So many people got rained out and their tents washed away. There was a mass exodus and there was still an entire day left. Luckily we were prepared with a canopy over our tent, next to it, a giant tarp over both, one under the tent and one in the tent so we stayed dry. We had rain boots and ponchos so we were good to go.
In 2009 on Thursday there was heavy rain in the early evening and on. Prepare. bring a tarp for the ground and as an additional rainfly. Extra plastic bags to keep clothes dry in tent. And tall boots. Otherwise it is fun plus free outdoor showers just bring soap.
Has anyone ever experienced a heavy downpour bonnaroo? If so, please share stories.
heard 2004 was pretty awful. pics back it up.
I believe '04 and '06 were the rainiest years, but that was before my time. We had the epic MMJ raingods set in '08, but that was about it. '09 and '10 had heavy rains before the fest, especially '09 if memory serves. Then it wasn't till Sunday night last year that we got any serious rain durin' the fest I think.

I can't remember the year but it was an endless amount of entertainment watching people sink to their calves in the mud pit outside the arch. It was littered with shoes and DGAFs.
One of the first years, like 2002/3 it rained and the what stage field was a massive mud pit. Then they threw down sand on it and the sun baked it. So squishy mud beneath baked sand/mud made it a real trippy kind of water bed thing. Like hexagons would form where you stepped and shift enough to convince my friend that the apocalypse was sure to ensue (other things didn't help). Another year it perfectly rained during Paul Oakenfield (feld?) and I made out with some girl in the rain like a meg ryan movie. So rain has its upside and downside.
Living just outside of Nashville, the last week the humidity has hit summer levels but there has been almost no real rain. Winter was longer and harsher than usual this year and it seems like the seasons have been lagging about a month. So it very well could be May Flowers, June Showers... because April still had some cold days.
and don't put the tarp under your tent. if it rains the runoff makes a lake and will likely flood your tent.

We were at Floydfest last year too, stayed fairly dry. We were camped in a very bad spot for water drainage, we were way better than most people, and better than a lot. Learned a lot that weekend about water preparation at a fest. Staying dry at centeroo is impossible. Campsite is another story, which if it's too bad... i'll just sleep in the back of my blazer.
Saturday in 2004 was bad. If I remember correctly, by the end of the night sets were starting hours late (The Dead and Primus specifically come to mind). It rained again Sunday afternoon and I remember standing mid-calf in mud during Trey and just feeling defeated and going home.
2005 was pretty bad as well. I remember that I forgot to zip up my bad after going through security because I was pretty drunk. It was most of OAR and part of Iron and Wine before I noticed. I remember going to grab some iced animal crackers out of my bag and discovering that they were kind of soggy. Being drunk, I ate them anyways. Noticed a dude standing next to me and offered him some wet cookies. He shrugged, smiled and dug in. Bonnaroo.
Another note to my fellow redheads... If the temps and clouds that are forecast do hold up, just because the sun isn't blinding you doesn't mean you won't get burnt. I have learned (having been raised by a very outdoor water sports type family) that reapplying sunscreen every 3-4 hours will usually keep the lobster/tomato colored pain away. But have your aloe close at hand too just in case!
and coconut oil! Its the best for burns and even has a natural SPF of 10 - Not sufficent alone but heck all the help we can get right?

The Thursday storm in 09 was crazy. The skies were so pretty, and at certain vantage points you could see heavy waves of rain moving across the camp grounds. They kept shutting down the toll booths resulting in people waiting 12+ hours in line.
And my OG 30$ tent never had a drop in it. Still mourning the loss of that thing.
in '04 Friday was mostly beautiful, If I remember correctly. even got sunburned listening to wilco. then Saturday it started to rain pretty heavy. got an excellent spot at galactic at the which because no one was there.the crowd didn't even reach the sound booth. people were sliding all over as they tried to dance, but galactic really brought it. That is a really vivid memory from '04 for me. Sunday we listened to Trey from the day parking lot in my friends car with the windows cracked, and then headed home.
was '06 that rainy? I don't really remember it being rainy. I remember it being so dusty the first day our friend had to go to the med tent with asthma issues.
in '09 we spent 12 fucking hours in line. we debated leaving knoxville right after phish on wednesaday night, but decided to leave bright and early thursday morning. tried to get in off exit 127, in the back of the fest, and sat there from about 10:00 am til 10:30 pm. I don't know if you could hear it inside, but there were definitely tornado sirens going off. got quite a few calls from my parents checking up on us. We didnt even try to set up sleeping tents in the rain, just pulled out a couple EZ-ups, and didn't extend the legs all the way so they were only a few feet off the ground. slept in lawn chairs or the car.
otherwise, I feel like any other rain we got was short lived and well received.
None of this is sounding too bad... Mud dance party during Passion Pit set.. Empty Galactic dance party at Which..
But really as long as the lightning stays away going to have a blast no matter what. I'm like the damn post office.. Bankrupt and still going rain, sun or monsoon.. And I'll be open on Sunday!
That storm on Thursday night in '09 was crazy. The muddy Passion Pit set afterwards was even crazier.
Delta Spirit was supposed to play right in the middle of Thursday but their flight in was delayed because of the storms. They took the stage after Passion Pit and were the last show of the day. Nobody said this would happen and the whole place cleared out. They played a killer set to a 1/4 filled tent and that was a great way to close out my first ever night at Bonnaroo. I've been a Delta Spirit fan ever since then and I will also remember that as the last time I went to a Thursday night set that wasn't packed.
Oh that's awesome! I had no idea that happened. I turned out and got the hell out of dodge after Passion Pit.
I was aware of the tornado warning because I was at the toll booth with a bunch of volunteers waiting for my ex who was also in the line.
Every time they shut it down they stuck us all under a tent and lined up golf carts that would haul us to "safety" should something happen.
What "safety?" I remember we were just chillin' at camp that night hearin' about tornado warnin's, but unless Capp Dogg has secret underground bunkers that would absolutely devastate the area.

I thought it was kind of a failed attempt as reassurance. Not to mention the miles of cares down the narrow road that were bumper to bumper. Now, I'm just a snow dwelling Yankee, so I don't really know what I'm talking about. But I can't see the car line being in any better of a position than the people already on site living in a tent.

This still ranks as one of my all time favorite Bonnaroo sets

That Delta Spirit show was amazing but I was still annoyed that it threw a monkey wrench into my plans. I was set to stay at the same tent for 4 shows in a row but because Delta got delayed there was nothing on the stage at the time. So I went over to Murs and caught some of his set before heading back and getting up close for Passion Pit/Delta Spirit. The Delta Spirit set was surreal as Matt Vasquez was hanging and talking with us in the front and instead of him bumming a cigarette off of a fan others were bumming cigarettes from him. It was awesome. I believe they played on other bands' instruments as well.

I actually didn't know it had a natural SPF... Plus the amazing smell!

I attempted the same after PP. 2009 was my first roo and I did not realize how important it was to remember your campsite's location. I was lost in rain for 2 hours!!! I have never forgotten where my camp was after that crazy night.
