I figured I would start a thread for International festivals in general without having to have a thread for each one. Certain ones like Glastonbury, Primavera and Reading/Leeds can probably get their own thread, but any others lower on the totem pole can wind up being discussed here. It is so much fun to experience festivals in another country, but so far all I have been to is Glastonbury. There are so many more than Glasto, but it sets the bar really high.
With that said, I just bought my ticket for IloSaariRock Festival in Joensuu Finland this year. My plan was to go visit Finland over the summer to see my family, but then I saw that Portishead and Trentemoller were playing at this small camping festival in the middle of Finland and decided I must go. There aren't that many bands I have heard of at the festival, and it looks pretty small, but what could be better than a smaller crowd for Portishead? Also, Trentemoller is absolutely incredible live. He is one of the best live electronic shows anywhere and blew my mind at sxsw a few years back.
Other bands playing ilosaarirock: Haim, Asap Ferg (conflicts with Portishead), Alice in Chains, Opeth, and Riverside. Aside from that it's mostly Finnish bands I have never heard of. Should be lots of fun.
This was the line-up if anyone has any idea of what other bands to see.
Finland also has another major festival in Helsinki called Flow Festival. They ended up getting Outkast, The National, Little Dragon, Janelle Monae, Jamie XX and overall have the larger and more diverse line-up, but its not a camping festival.
Portishead tops my list of bands I haven't seen yet, so that was my main reason to side with ilosaarirock along with Trentemoller and my timescale of travel.
Anyone else gone to any other International festivals? There are so many out there.
Anyone ever done Way Out West fest? I've always wanted to go to Norway/Sweden/Denmark and that seems like a good thing to hit during the trip. Would I need to speak Swedish to pull it off?

I was just looking at the schedule for ilosaarirock and assumed Portishead, Trentemoller, and Haim will be playing an outdoor stage, but they are playing in a tent which makes up for the fact that the sun sets around 10pm there. Less than 3 weeks out from now.
This is the tent stage they will be playing in with room for 7000. I can barely find any info about the Finnish bands playing at the festival and will have to look up a few more, but I plan to skip almost everything else to get good spots for Trentemoller and portishead.
Still debating on what cameras to bring. I don't think i will bother with my DSLR although they are allowed.
Anyone ever do Big Day Out in Australia? Their website already wrapped up for the year. Is it camping? (doubt it)..
Glasto is very high oh my list but I am also naively hoping Daft Punk drops like a 8 stop world tour in 2015 that is international anywhere and I can just jump on that train to somewhere crazy. But since I'm not holding that breath no matter where I head next year is going to be international. I need some new new!
I know near nothing about Int'l festivals so any and all recommendations people have would be sweet!

Hi tbd, I noticed no one had answered this for you and, as an Aussie who's been to a few BDOs, figured this was the time to stop lurking and actually make an account.
BDO is NOT a camping festival, as it is traditionally a one-day event.
It is also worth noting there will be no Big Day Out in 2015. The festival reportedly lost $15m this year and kind of went into crisis mode.
Promoters are still claiming it will return in 2016, but I certainly wouldn't be confident enough to consider planning an international trip around it any time soon.
Other festivals in this neck of the woods you may want to check out are Falls Festival, Splendour in the Grass, and Byron Bay Bluesfest. All are multiday camping festivals with pretty eclectic lineups, and Falls and Splendour usually pick up a few big names that are doing the festival rounds that year.
Falls last year had Vampire Weekend, The Roots, Solange and MGMT.
Over the past few years Bluesfest has pulled Paul Simon, Robert Plant, Jack Johnson, Iggy Pop, Santana, John Mayer, John Fogerty and Bob Dylan.
Splendour is later this month, headliners are Lily Allen and Outkast (believe it or not, Australia only has ONE festival headlined by Outkast!).
Or if you are into something a little more genre-specific, Australia has Future Music Festival and Stereosonic for the EDM crowd, and Soundwave for people looking for something heavier (a personal favourite).
Exit Festival in Serbia is consistently voted one of the UK's best festival. It goes 4 days and has a very eclectic lineup. It's streaming live right now. Ultra Europe/Croatia is also streaming live now. Not that streams give you a realistic view of the festival, but it's good lazy fun on a weekend

Thanks so much this was very helpful! I'm trying to learn about as many as possible so really great info!!

I can now cross Portishead off the top of my must see list, but they still rank at the top ogf my must see again list. The show at ilosaarirock was incredible and I think it was the same tent as the John Peel Stage at Glastonbury. I have no clue how crowded it was behind me, but I was 2nd row and close enough to give Beth a group hug right as show ran down at the end of the set. They are so incredible live.
I got this uploaded and have a lot of really good photos, but I am still travelling around Finland and may head to the Northern part of Norway this weeknd, I won't get to them for a nother week or so.
As far as the festival goes, it was great. Probably less than 30,000 people with campgrounds connected to the festival and no searches going into the campgrounds, and nearly everyone drinks until 4am or later after the festival. No one uses ice or coolers so its almost all warm beer or other various alcohol. I would go again in a heartbeat if I am over here.
Here is the video I have.
And the 15 song setlist which I had in my hand, but caught with the girl next to me and she let me borrow her photo pass for the show so I let her keep it.
Silence Nylon Smile Mysterons The Rip Sour Times Magic Doors Wandering Star Machine Gun Over Glory Box Chase the Tear Cowboys Threads
Encore: Roads We Carry On
Aside from that, my other favorites were: Trentemoller Haim Gracias and the Globe Band Alice in chains which I left early for to watch the world cup final.
Good times were had and new friends were made. Such a fun party vibe. They could use more party favors though.
Yep, I went to the Sydney date this year (Pearl Jam killed it). As I gather, it's pretty similar to Lollapalooza (makes sense - they're both owned by C3).
Their website already wrapped up for the year.
And hopefully not forever. The festival has been struggling for a while, and this year was brutal. Reportedly lost $15m for the whole tour. They "claimed" 20k attendance in Sydney; I've been to enough concerts and festivals to gauge crowd sizes pretty well, and it felt much more like 10-12k.
Is it camping? (doubt it)..
Not unless you want to pass out in your car.
Sozly covered the main ones pretty well. One that he did not mention is St. Jerome's Laneway Festival, which may be the most hipster festival south of Pitchfork. The biggest camping festival is Splendour in the Grass, which is next weekend (and I'm insanely jealous of my cuz who is going... maybe next year for me). The weather here is temperate enough that winter camping festivals are possible.
Beyond those, you have your "boutique" festivals, which have been popping up like mad lately. These are more focused on the overall experience than simply the lineup, and often try to incorporate interests besides music. For instance, you've got:
* Pigsty in July - head up to wine country, hear some tunes, and eat delicious meat slow-roasted over an open fire.
*Riverboats Festival - go to the forest, ride paddle steam boats on the mighty Murray River, and enjoy a gourmet food and wine festival while you watch live music.
* Let Them Eat Cake - visit the grounds of a 19th century mansion outside Melbourne, and spend your New Year's Day at an electro garden party.
And finally you have doofs, which are like festival / rave / burn hybrids, held out in the bush (the last one I went to was 45 minutes down a dirt road). Australia is so remote that it's really easy to find farms not too far from the city, but quite far from the neighbour's farm, which is perfect for something like this. Usually just a couple thousand people, though there are larger ones. They're generally pretty no rules - no searches, 24-hour music, bonfires allowed, et cetera. These are invariably fueled by several dozen Fear & Loathing briefcases' worth.
You have no idea how jealous I am. Enjoy that festival. For $120, I'm super impressed.
Thanks! When I saw the price I couldn't resist. Ought and Swans are worth the price alone for me. I'll admit though I don't know much of the lineup, any recommendations that aren't Swans, tune-yards, Mac Demario, st Vincent, son lux, perfume genius, and Savages?
