This is the truth. Even a year later it is still hard to believe they pulled Jack Johnson from a guest appearance with ALO on Thursday to headliner when they had her there.
They had previously booked him as a headliner in 2008 so I think that they felt that he was a more suitable fill in for Mumford. He definitely had established his Bonnaroo cred from his previous three or four appearances and was headlining sheds and arenas in the US. It also had the bonus of requiring the least amount of scheduling changes.
I bet the scheduling change was a huge factor, but damn it woulda been nice to see Bjork at night.

I agree with you. Do not get me wrong. I am glad she played early at the same timw. I got set up nicely for the soul superjam. I do nor doubt J Johnson's bonnaroo credentials either though I suppose in retrospect my post made it seem that way. Scheduling was likely the kicker.
I dont think any female is going to headline Bonnaroo any time soon. Madonna would probably be the only one to get a legit headliner time slot. I think even she, along with Beyonce, Gaga..and really thats the end of the possible headliners in my mind.. would all get a slot similar to Jay-Z after Stevie Wonder
Beyonce is the biggest pop star in the world, saying she would do anything but headline is just silly.
Easy killer, I'm not hating on Beyonce, but sorry I just don't see it. Not arguing she is or isn't the biggest pop star in the world either.. could throw a few names out there but it is just splitting hairs really... the point I was trying to make is just that there are no females, Beyonce included, that would GET a legitimate headliner TIME SLOT.. not that they wouldnt deserve one, or wouldn't be billed in the top 4-5 names.... I mean Bjork pre HL is about as close as it gets.
Aside from the female debate.. I dont see any pop headliner at Bonnaroo... again, not in the typical headliner time slots anyway.. I think JT would be about the only real possibility, but I'd bet money he too would have a slot similar to Jay Z semi late night
again jkust my opinion... I'd much rather see Beyonce than that Kanye nonsense I had to watch this year if it helps my cause any!

I'm really trying not to be curt about it, but Beyonce being anything other than top 3 is honest to god laughable, I'm sorry. She would get a headliner time slot, and probably have the biggest crowd of the weekend. She's far more popular now than Jay Z was in 2010, and 100x more popular than Jack White/Arcade Fire/Kings of Leon/many other previous headliners.
I'm not saying your opinion is invalid, merely very very uninformed. I've also yet to hear a serious argument of why Bonnaroo wouldn't have a headliner that makes pop music... Paul McCartney was in the biggest pop band of al time. Stevie Wonder is a pop artist. I could go on and on.
Beyonce is at the height if her career, making critically acclaimed music, praised by both mainstream and indie publications. Hipsters love her, hipsters love Bonnaroo.
"I don't see a non-jam band headlining" - Some dude prior Dave Matthews Band headlining "I don't see an alt-rock band headlining" - Some dude prior to Radiohead headlining "I don't see a metal act headlining" - Some dude prior to Metallica "I don't see a rapper headlining" - Some dude prior to Eminem/Jay-Z

I can think of a few other descriptors for Elton that make him more, clears throat, "qualified" (palatable to the masses) to headline, but we've done this all before.

I do not believe Janet Jackson is getting enough love in this thread.
I haven't the faintest idea when she last toured or what she's doing now. I love Janet. I'm really only responding because she was my first big concert (I think I was 10) on her Velvet Rope tour, I think that was the name. That would be a trip for me to see her again.

If people are going to dismiss the Dixie Chicksas no longer being relevant enough to headline then Janet Jackson is definitely out of bounds.
I follow that thought process (temporal relevancy) - they have both been touring (or not) about the same time period. But two things:
1 - One of these acts sold 100 million more records than the other
2 - One of these acts would have the handicap of breaking both the female headliner and country act headliner taboo
Where all that gets us, I don't know.
With their bluegrass roots and musical abilities, I would think that the Chicks would be better suited as Roo headliners.
Also, as Nashville outsiders they'll probably not get a CMA slot in the near future but could still pull from that crowd. Until they spoke up about Bush & Iraq, they were seriously one of the biggest acts in music.
I admit that they're unlikely. I just think that they're more likely than Janet Jackson.

There will be a pop-star headliner some day.
I should have clarified that with current Pop star, but you are most likely correct on this.

Again, I'm not saying she isnt worthy of a headliner spot, and billed top 3 is a possibility for sure.. I'd guess 4th, but again with no other names to compare that argument is really pointless. I don't think Beyonce is in the same class as Stevie, and she is no where near Paul McCartney.. they fill the "legend" spot that Bonnaroo seems to fill each year. Again, Im not trying to argue the merits of Beyonce, or any other female or pop act. I just don't see it happening unless it is similar to the Stevie Wonder / Jay Z time slots. My whole observation was just I did not see them putting Beyonce at a 930-1130 slot, but more like a 12-2 slot after someone else played from like 9-11
I could be 100% wrong and it wouldn't be anymore shocking than Metallica, Emenim, or Kanye's "triumphant" return as Delicious Meatball Sub pointed out. Beyonce would also be far from the worst headliner I've seen at Bonnaroo. Believe me I know better than to spew Beyonce hate on this message board, and that was not at all my intention!!
I remember Gaga's tour dates being open during Bonnaroo 2014 leading to some early headlining speculation this year, but obviously nothing came of that. Not to say "this should have been the year" -- just that there may have been an opening this year that never materialized into a booking.
Also, Santigold killed What Stage in 2012 -- one of the best performances I saw that year, at least. Not big enough to headline, but worth a mention in this thread as a great female What Stage performer from years past.
