I saw him play at the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the guy has the cred in my opinion. He's been at it a while and he plays the guitar really well. Which leads me to another suggestion: Could we consider Black Label Society for Bonnaroo?

I know this was like 11 years ago but I saw him play for Ozzy at Ozzfest and he was amazing.
that's awesome. I always wanted to go to Ozzfest, never made it. Did you see Coal Chamber by any chance? They are another one of my favs.
It was awesome, before MTV came along. I went a few years and the best shows I saw were Judas Priest, Marilyn Manson, and not that I'm a fan of Slayer but Slayer had such an intense mosh pit that got out of control they had to shut down temporarily. I did not see coal chamber. They were on second stage and I spent most of the day in the shade bc I went to the one in St. Louis and it was middle of summer, hot as balls. Sorry

This is an interesting question because of the different interpretations that could be used to determine your answer. As Jake Jortles pointed out, you could draw a line because of what defines modern. As Delicious Meatball Sub pointed out, the definition for what a rock star even is is pretty broad. Do you just off the attitude they convey? The innovation in their music? Their album sales? The style of music they play?
This is already coming down to "do you value innovation or consistency in a 'rockstar.'" Consistency has an early lead. Boring, boring consistency.
Consistency: Grohl, Jay-Z, Bono, Martin Innovation: Kanye, Thom, Jack White, Win Butler Neither: Bellamy
that assessment of jay is way off. Hes anything but consistent. He jas 3 untouchable and classic albums and the rest are hit or miss. On top of that whatever jay says goes in hiphop for at least a 10 year stretch. Started many trends and ended others. Is the reason for kanye and is one of the greatest ever in his genre.
