Imagine if Rush and Steely Dan had a baby who hung out with the Grateful Dead and Igor Stravinsky, and THAT baby grew up to marry John Coltrane and they had a baby but that baby spoke a made up language, was French and hung out with George Clinton and Opeth all the time. That's Magma.
Duke Performances has commissioned the exceptional solo guitarist William Tyler–who occupies the musical intersection of John Fahey and Bill Frisell–to make a new performance that reflects on the lingering legacy of the Civil War through the use of archival features and music. Corduroy Roads, created by Tyler with his collaborators filmmaker Steve Milligan and theater director Akiva Fox, is a new collaborative music and film project. The piece creates a narrative frame for extraordinary photographs of the Civil War taken by George Barnard and Alexander Gardner, 150-year-old artifacts recently acquired by Duke University Libraries. Taking these fragile and beautiful images as his inspiration, Tyler, a Southerner from Tennessee and Mississippi who grew up fascinated by the Civil War, examines questions of history, memory, and the ways in which the war haunts the South to this day.
Max Richter will be performing The Blue Notebooks and Infra on the 28th. On the 29th, Vivaldi Recompossed and The Leftovers Live will be performed at Big Ears.
Per a Big Ears re tweet
I am grinning at getting to hear The Blue Notebook. By chance, I was listening to it on the way to work this morning.

Looks like I might be in for two nights of Richter.

I saw that they were coming to town with A Winged Victory... and have my fingers crossed that they'll be added. I love Loscil... Even though I was disappointed with the last round of announcements [and by that I don't mean I didn't like who they added... I was just hoping to see something blow my mind... like Scott O)))], I really can't wait for this event!!!

Yes. I'd really wanted to go to the original performance, but it sold out before I could get tix.
Kronos/Riley/Wu Man - The Cusp of Magic Kronos/Bryce Dessner - 40 Cannons Kronos/Nels Cline - Views From Here To The Heavens (for Scott Fraser) Kronos/Tanya Tagaq - Tundra Songs Kronos/Rhiannon Giddens and Sam Amidon - Folk Songs Kronos/Laurie Anderson - Landfall
So…there you have it for now. Kronos Quartet will perform 4 full programs during our weekend, each in two parts with an intermission, collaborating with 8 of the most visionary artists of our time…a marvelous little festival within the festival.
Was hoping for some Aheym but I'd love a new piece.
So I'm guessing Kronos takes over the Tennessee Theater?

That just shot up my list of "must see". I was thinking that he's be playing the Square Room but I have a feeling that is going to be a Bijou or KAM performance now.
Hopkins fits Big Ears perfectly. They tend to share "So and So remixes So and So" links a lot. Obviously, the latter is on the line-up. It's up in the air if Hopkins will play (although tour dates have him in the US during Coachella weeks). That increases his probablity tho. So at least there's that.
Would be absolutely thrilled with a Jon Hopkins add. Immunity was one of my favorite records of 2013. Been dying to catch him live.
Probably going to book my room/flight this weekend. Which hotel is most walkable to all the venues? (And I'm assuming the venues are walkable?)
They are but (there's always a but) some hurt. Dave drug me from KAM to the Pilot Light some super secret Knoxvillian route and it was up the side of a mountain. Bring good shoes is what I'm saying. That said, Scruff City Hall/Square Room/Tennessee/Bijou are all within just a few blocks of one another.

Open to any suggestions though, really leaning towards a hotel cause I wasn't digging the 45-minute drive to my in-laws' every night.
Edit: Aaand I went ahead and booked Clarion Inn North Knoxville. I called and used the group rate discount thing, but I'm pretty sure it was still more than what booking.com quoted...
