Hey y'all! I was at the Tomato Head on Sunday and they have in Big Ears pint glasses. The proceeds go to The Joy of Music. It's a great restaurant, the same place we had brunch last year and a great cause. Also, there is a picture of a hare on the glass. I'm thinking we need bunny ears.
I'm really in love with the design this year. I'm also down for whatever to wear on my head.
Rival Consoles officially added, along with Coupler. I've never heard of Coupler. Anybody know him?
NICE! It's Ryan (who plays in Lambchop) solo project. I've heard but haven't seen him yet. Solid. Thanks, Big Ears. Thanks for making this impending schedule brutal.
E: Apparently, I have seen him open for Wooden Wand. I honestly don't remember the set though.

Hotel booked - should have done it earlier, as I got aced out on the block rate at the Hilton Downtown, but Crowne Plaza's not much more and still looks walkable!
Now to dig into this lineup - any good Spotify or other playlists out there? I've heard the official Big Ears/AC Entertainment one too many times now, sounds like the same Steve Gunn song popping up in rotation every five minutes. Usually have more time myself to explore but have been working way too much lately...

Yes, the Crowne Plaza is still very walkable. Welcome aboard!
Saturday night is the perfect storm of conflicts. Four acts I was dying to see, all playing at the same time.
I think my main conflict is Steve Gunn vs. Clark. I'll have a million opportunities to see Gunn though. It just sucks missing him.
It makes up for the conflict by giving me Grouper > Ben Frost. Saturday is gonna rule.
Grouper and Tune-Yards are my big conflicts, although I suppose I could leave the latter early in order to see the former. I've just been dying to see Tune-Yards for a long time and would like the "full experience," as it were. Sucks that I'm gonna have to miss Bing & Ruth, but at least I'll be able to see Amidon with the Quartet. I'm very happy that I'll be able to see AWVFTS without any conflicts though. Sunday should be nice too. Possibly hit up Richter and then Swans.
Need to decide between Harold Budd and Rival Consoles too. Only recently started listening to them, but I like both about equally.
Tune-Yards may be too packed for my taste. While I love Merrill, I probably won't get another chance to see Rival Consoles.
If you've never seen her and love those records, she won't disappoint in her sets. If it were me, I'd go to Tune-Yards. That said, I have tickets to a show after Big Ears (just to avoid that conflict). I was bummed Ryley was thrown in that slot. He and Steve Gunn were a big reason I'm so excited about Big Ears. I'm Sure he will come through soon enough.
I'm digging this bike idea, seems to make a tight schedule more reasonable.
Rough Draft Friday: The Bad Plus > Kronos Quartet + Wu Man > Demdike Stare > (Last half hour of) Jamie xx Saturday: Wu Man > Kronos Quartet: Folk Songs > AWVFTS > Jozef Van Wissem > Laurie Anderson/Kronos > Max Richter > Grouper > Harold Budd & Keith Lowe > Tyondai Braxton Sunday: Kronos Quartet/Tanya Tagaq/Bryce Dessner > Terry Riley > (Partial) Bill Frisell > Perfume Genius > Max Richter > Kronos Quartet

Yeah, the Ryley slot is unfortunate. His new album is one of my favorites so far this year and totally came out of nowhere for me. Steve Gunn is playing at Shaky Knees, which I'll also be attending, so I'm not as worried about catching him.
Thanks for the advice on Tune-Yards. I do have a month to think about it, but you've validated my first instinct. Perhaps Grouper will do one of these "secret shows" they keep mentioning. I'd be okay with that.
Friday: Harold Budd > The Bad Plus > Clark > Demdike Stare
Saturday: Kronos Quartet, Rhiannon Giddens, Sam Amidon > A Winged Victory for the Sullen > (Maybe a little bit of) Holly Herndon > Kronos Quartet, Laurie Anderson > Max Richter > Tune-Yards > Grouper (?) > Ben Frost
Sunday: HIVE > Terry Riley > Perfume Genius > Max Richter (through "Vivaldi") > Swans
The timing of everything on Saturday will be hard, so I'm not sure if all that will work out. Right now, I'm trying to figure out Friday, specifically the conflict between Rival Consoles and Harold Budd and the conflict between The Bad Plus and Kronos w/ Terry Riley.

I don't know about playlists, but I've listened to tons of albums by this year's artists on Spotify (for free).
Ok seriously, outside of Sam Amidon and Ben Frost, I have no clue what the hell to see on Saturday and Sunday. I need y'alls help.
Saturday - If I went and didn't see HIVE and Laurie Anderson & Kronos, I'd feel like I failed. Both are such big pieces for the festival. Other than that, spend the next month with that last A Winged Victory For The Sullen album.
Sunday - Sunday is pretty light. Tennessee doesn't open till after 6 and the Square Room is closed, so there is only 3 venues operating all day. I'd suggest Rhiannon Giddens (knock out a Roo conflict), Max Richter: 'Vivaldi: Recomposed' and Perfume Genius. I'm doing the Kronos sets that day at The Standard (if you're looking for something to do during the day).

Saturday: William Tyler and/or Hildur Guðnadóttir Sunday: Really anything/everything
Right now... Friday Harold Budd & Keith Lowe -> Nosaj Thing -> Clark -> Demdike Stare/Haxan or Jamie xx (depends on how I'm feeling that night) Saturday SQURL/Man Ray -> possibly some of Kronos -> Nels Cline -> Holly Herndon -> first part of Laurie Anderson/Kronos -> William Tyler -> second half of Max Richter -> Grouper -> Ben Frost Sunday Tyondai Braxton -> Terry Riley -> Bill Frisell -> Silver Apples -> Max Richter -> Kronos Quartet/Nels Cline or Swans

Hotel book, staying at the Crowne Plaza. I don't know what I am more excited for, the festival itself, or returning to Knoxville for the first time since I left. I lived there for 12 years, hopefully get to see a lot of old friends while I am in town. The festival is not exactly in my wheelhouse so I have a lot of listening to do. I will be "working" for Big Ears as well, so I may not have a say in some situations as to what I get to see/hear. Nels Cline is a must though.
