I'll probably end up at the Tomato Head quite a few times. You can get out of there fairly quickly (sometimes) for dinner, which helps since there isn't much of a schedule break.
Hotel book, staying at the Crowne Plaza. I don't know what I am more excited for, the festival itself, or returning to Knoxville for the first time since I left. I lived there for 12 years, hopefully get to see a lot of old friends while I am in town. The festival is not exactly in my wheelhouse so I have a lot of listening to do. I will be "working" for Big Ears as well, so I may not have a say in some situations as to what I get to see/hear. Nels Cline is a must though.
How exactly long have you been gone? I can never remember. I was thinking of it since puptent brought up the Tomato Head. I know they have done their wholesale renovation since you left. I've only been there a couple times since the renovation, and it's still really weird to me.
In regards to brunch, there are several options around downtown any day. Sunday Brunch has seemingly become rather popular around downtown Knoxville. abrakapokus would have a better handle on where's good and what would have the capacity to fit everyone as some of the places can run small.

Wow, uh, have to think about it for a second. I have been gone since October 2010. SO a lot has changed since my departure. Preservation Pub is one of my all time favorites, I know that is still there. Tomato Head was definitely there, ate there a few times. Other than that the only place on the list I recognize is Bistro at the Bistro...I used to work downtown on Market Street, it was always a good place to eat. I am not a picky eater, it will just be good to see you all. I trust Abra's opinion. :-)

Yes, you will notice a significant change in Market Square and downtown. I'll be interested to know what you think.
This makes me hate that overlap with Rival Consoles even more now. How big of a walk is it from The Standard to The Square Room? Google Maps has it at like under 10 minutes. I'm hoping for some super sekret back way to magically teleport me from one to the other.

If you don't mind climbing a hill and cutting through the Crown Plaza, it is not that far.
This reminds me. I was talking to the lady friend on Monday about brunch and such. Did you ever make it to Chandler's last year? If not, you need to go. It's too small for a large gathering, but well...

I did not. We're arriving super early though. I will have to correct this.

It's your kind of place. It's a meat and three joint that is out of a remodeled old adobe style Taco Bell. A husband and wife runs it. It has a tiny dining area where at least one booth is always taken up with random storage. Also, they have Kool-Aid as a beverage choice. I find it interesting from a people watching perspective because lunch always has a mix of people from downtown in nice suits and blue collar workers.
I love that "my kinda place" has Kool-Aid on tap. You guys must think the world of me.
You have no idea how much I lost my mind when I found out they had Kool-Aid as a choice. If I didn't love tea so much, I totally would get it every time.

This place in Johnson City has "Count-retto Aid" which, not surprisingly, is basically super-sweetened Kool-Aid.

I'm guessing with your knee that biking is out of the question? On bike The Standard > The Square Room is 0.42 miles - 1 minute. Pretty sure when I checked that all venues are within 3 minutes on bicycle, while walking can take up to 10-15 minutes between some of them.
I'm being lazy and don't wanna bring mine. The people that are sponsoring the bike thing has almost $150 for a weekend rental on their website. I'm sure it would be cheaper for Big Ears but holy cow that's a lot of scratch.
I'm Just gonna haul ass or get drunk and forget about it. I'm sure I'll be fine.

Hmm the website says the rental service is "complimentary" for passholders. Also: "All renters must complete a waiver and provide a refundable security deposit. Rentals are limited on a first-come, first-serve basis."
The refundable deposit could be steep, but I don't know. As long as you bring it back though you don't have to worry about it. It's kinda dumb that they don't just list the exact deposit price though.
Oh wow. That's awesome. I really haven't looked at the updated website.
Yeah it sounds like if you get there in time it should be a lock, that's why I was excited about it. I don't have a bike myself and I couldn't afford some $150 rental bullshit either.
man, i don't know why i torture myself by coming into this thread. it would be one thing if it were just the festival, but it being back in my old stomping grounds is just a little salt in the wound.

2016. Make it happen.
One of the articles said they have a three year deal with the city. It also said there was an outdoor stage, so who really knows.

Here's a Spotify playlist I threw together that has albums from pretty much everyone playing, only a few exceptions not on Spotify. 500+ songs, have had this on shuffle of late and checking to see what perks my ears before I make my own schedule out!
Favorite discovery thus far is Rival Consoles - really liking the direction his newer stuff is headed in, "Sonne" and "Odyssey" are both great. Had heard the title cut off "Odyssey" a year or so back as the intro to a DJ Food mix and remembered how good it was at the time - happy to rediscover it again...
