Headliners generally have large amounts of exposure through radio over the years (with the exception of phish off the top of my head). Something I can't see MMJ getting. I am not saying this is the determining factor but it's true. Are they worthy of it though? Yes, especially at bonnaroo.
I don't care if its headline or not but just throw them in the last slot somewhere and let them go to town.

Not to be this guy, but mostly playing devil's advocate to your statement but I would say that Radiohead wasn't one to majorly be played in radio stations. Creep, High and Dry and Karma Police would be the only songs I can remember on the radio and those are "irrelevant" (for a lack of a better word) to when they headlined bonnaroo twice. Not saying that MMJ is comparable to Radiohead's success, I'm just going by the statement of the radio thing.

I bet MMJ and more people at their show in 2011 than Widespread Panic did. I understand people could be waiting for Arcade Fire or that it was a Friday but they still played from 8PM-10PM on the main stage. Bonnaroo even calls it a headlining show and it pretty much was.

A band doesn't need major radio play to headline. We've named phish, Radiohead & widespread but I'd add Jack White, off the top of my head. Kanye half counts, since he's touring an album that didn't get/need radio play.
Radio is just not that relevant anymore. Coachella's headliners probably include loads more headliners who never were radio friendly... If you're a jam band or a hip rock band, it just doesn't matter. Not many young people listen to the radio anymore.

Not many young kids listen to Dylan or Wilco either but MMJ was 3rd fiddle to those headliners of the Americana tour...
I think thats a little different, those who were going to that show mostly knew all these artists and probably had a lot of crossover fans. Wilco pre-HL and so did MMJ at bonnaroo so i don't think it would lower mmj's chance to headline using that logic.

I feel like most people should at least agree that if MMJ somehow headlines next year (barring some massive success of their next album) it's almost entirely because of their history with Bonnaroo. In terms of popularity they're not even bigger than Arctic Monkeys and they were billed 9th this year, so...
^ This is what I dont understand about the MMJ argument. I like them, but not nearly as much as most of you. I would still be at their show barring some major conflict. I just don't see them as "headliner material" for Bonnaroo. I would say pre headliner saturday / 4th is as high as they could hope for. I can see them getting a "Kings of Leon nod" for their history with Bonnaroo and ACE/Superfly, but I think a headlining spot at Forecastle next year is much more likely.

I love MMJ but I really don't see how they could headline in 2015. Just don't think they're big enough. I'm still seeing LN Which or Pre-headliner like a lot of other people. Either would be ok with me, them being there is all that really matters.
I feel like when they do headline people like this will dissappear much like the "insiders" who said that awful widespread would play 2 years ago!
I don't know that any "insider" with a legitimate source thought that WSP would play back in 2012. The last two years' headliners have been pretty much figured out by these boards by late December or so.

Also, go away.
How am i supposed to know if they are legitimate insiders? Everybody thinks they are!!

I think MMJ could do something like The Flaming Lips did this past Roo, LN Which. The past 3 Sunday headliners have been Phish, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Elton John...doesn't really seem like MMJ could stack up to that. When they was there in 2011 they pre-headlined, don't seem like they would put them in the same spot again.

Roo has had no problem scheduling Wilco as the preheadliners that last couple times they have played...

Tough to argue with people who believe MMJ will be 4th-6th on the bill but I choose to believe that AC/Superfly have more flexibility in the billing order... I think if it made sense for them to put MMJ as a sunday night headliner and 3rd on the bill, but then put another major (but polarizing) act as a pre-headliner and 4th on the bill... I mean, I don't see any issue with that. Or maybe the 4th billed act would be Late Night What.
I'm totally biased because I'm an MMJ fanatic, but with a new album on the way... And not a whooole lot of headliner-worthy acts touring... I'm pulling for a sunday night headliner from them. Or maybe a really sweet double-headliner situation.

I think if the bill were U2 friday, Foo Fighters saturday, and then MMJ were sunday, that's plausible. Especially if like, Drake or Deadmau5 or Pharrell are 4th on the bill to diversify things. Throw Lorde in there at 6 or 7. We all know Bonnaroo loves white guy rock.

New album looking at a possible April release. Could be perfect timing for a stop at Roo.
SIMGE: What can we expect from you and My Morning Jacket coming up next year?
JJ: We’re working on finishing up the new record, hopefully it will come out in April. Then we’re doing our One Big Holiday festival in January. Once the album comes out I’m sure we’ll be touring. So we’ll be out and about next year.
I'd still prefer another epic MMJ latenight over a possible, but I think unlikely, Sunday HL. Put them in the second line. But also we need another epic Jim James SJ.
My Morning Jacket Plan a Double Surprise By Jason Newman The psychedelic-rock crew will return with two albums over the next two years My Morning Jacket have stayed relatively quiet since they released 2011's Circuital, but they're about to make up for lost time: The band is currently finishing work on two new studio albums, one due in April, the other in 2016. "I just had tons of songs this time," says frontman Jim James, checking in from the Portland, Oregon, studio where the group is mixing the first of the two LPs. "We didn't even get to all of them." Late last year, James reconvened the Jacket at a studio near San Francisco to start work on the tunes he'd stockpiled since their last album. "There was no rehearsal period," James says. "We could just jump in and start rolling tape. It was really fun." They ended up with 24 solid contenders, splitting them up into a pair of stand-alone discs, which they're still in the process of sequencing. "I love making each record sound different," he says. "I love the thrill of putting on a record and feeling like you got the wrong one from the factory." That's not all: The singer reveals that he's also begun work on a follow-up to his 2013 solo set, Regions of Light and Sound of God, which he hopes to finish in time for a 2016 release. "The Jacket is about creating a circle of power," James says. "The solo record is more of a patchwork."
With the (first) new album out in April, I'd say there's an extremely strong chance of them touring heavily throughout the Spring and Summer so I'd say it's very very likely they'll hit Bonnaroo
