I don't believe MMJ is ever going to headline. I think they missed that boat, for a while they were trending up and up and up but not anymore. They've probably dropped a bit actually. I think they'll be back on Which stage.

Which stage daytime set for 1.5 hours like Gov't Mule had recently is my worst nightmare

MMJ just needs a LN Which slot every year. At this point I don't think they will ever headline. They will always be a 4-7 billed act IMO. It's been over a decade. If they havent made the headliner push yet it has to happen with the next album or it will never happen unless the break up and play a reunion show in like 10'years

Aug 2 - Beyoncé and Jay-Z
Aug 23-24 - FYF Fest
Sept 17 - The Breeders
Sept 22 - Lykke Li
Oct 6 - Ought
Why does everyone think they're so sure of the future of MMJ? Are you professional musicians? Do you book bands at major music festivals for a living? Sure they probably won't headline in 2015, but to say they will never headline is a bit out of everyone's league. We have no idea what albums they will put out, what songs they will write, what direction they will take. It's very preemptive and unnecessary. 2015 discussion is fair, anything after that you're talking our your ass.

Speaking for myself alone, I've seen MMJ 25 times on top of Jim James solo and with various projects 6 times. I know the band, the audience, and their trajectory thus far.
When I talk about them to the masses, most people have no clue who they are. If I did this with Dave Matthews, Kings of Leon, or Mumfords, it'd be an entirely different story. Jacket's audience is getting older because long time music lovers are getting in on the secret; not the youth.
Bonnaroo loves MMJ, but the festival's cash cow, the first time festival goer, is clueless.
You make very good points and to be fair I was pretty drunk last night. I get how seeing them so much and following them for so many years gives you insight. I'm like that with a few bands myself. Regardless of that, we can't tell the future, we're not fortune tellers, and it's impossible to know where they're going when we don't know what they may be writing or planning to release for the rest of their career.

But seriously, the fact that none of us can see the future/know the answer should be assumed in the whole architecture of these arguments. That's what makes the arguments fun. It's like Whose Line Is It Anyway: everything is made up and the points don't matter.

Except I feel like if we were keeping score I would be winning right?
I hear Ben can drum like Lifeson, Play guitar like Peart, and sing like Lee
Did I ever tell you about the time Ben was in a production of "the king and I"? Well anyways, before the show, ben chloroforms the entire cast, and slowly eats them in front of the audience for two hours. The production got pretty good reviews.
