The general consensus amongst the crazies (myself included) is Big D is kind of forgettable, but this song is very quality. Kind of a mix between ISM and RoLSoG, with a ton of live potential.
Seems like Jim singing in a lower register is a thing now. Not a good or bad thing, but worth noting.

I'm reserving judgment until I hear the rest of the album, but I'm not big on either of these first two songs. I'm not really surprised I feel that way, though, as I'm of the opinion that they haven't put out a great album in a decade.

I agree that Spring seems like a more interesting and better written song. However, I like Big D (oh god that is gonna get quoted) because it seems like a really ballsy(intended) straight-forward rock song that will kick ass live.
Can't wait to see them play Spring. Mostly just to see Jim howl at the moon. I'm loving the sounds on this track though, the guitar solo is very reminiscent of some sounds found on some new basement tapes songs.

Circuital is genius, not sure how any MMJ fan can disagree. I don't get the lack of respect for that album.

I agree Circuital > Evil Urges, but Circuital is only a good album. TF-Z are all incredible albums. Evil Urges and Circuital are a step down in quality.
Big D and Spring are forgettable. Both are solid instrumentally, but lack depth contextually. The lyrics are shallow and generic. Jim yelling "Hey" on "Spring" is embarrassing considering how overused the technique has become in popular music. I'm still holding out hope this record turns out to be spectacular. As of now, they're 0/2.
I have no doubt all these songs will turn out incredible live, even if I'm not feeling the studio versions.

I actually like Evil Urges more than most it seems. It was my introduction to the band. The break down on the title track, Smokin From Shootin>Touch Me Part 2, Highly Suspicious is awesome live. It dips a little in the middle but even the weaker songs have a lot of energy.

I think Circuital is a lot better than Evil Urges, but I still think it's really spotty. The Circuital songs at least don't make me cringe when they start live. They've changed a lot over the years, but for me, they'll never top the shows I saw them play in 2004 and 2005. That was their peak for me.
Time for some serious homework. Create your dream MMJ setlist for bonnaroo. We'll assume they're playing the same slot as 2011 so you only get 20-23 songs (including encore). Try to keep it realistic though...

It's going to be interesting to see how they work these song into a setlist. The more I'm listening I think Waterfall could be as good of an opener as Spring.
This album as a whole is much more guitar focused than Circuital but I think it's worth noting that Bo is probably his strongest on this album from top to bottom as any he has been on. Hopefully we can get him a little higher in the mix live than normal. OBH people were saying he had a full new rig and was mixed higher
I love the whole album, but "The Waterfall" is something else. The structure alone is impressive, so many different parts coming and going, all just as good as the last. Poignant lyrics. Jim and Carl rippin' some next level licks. And as noted, Bo absolutely kills it with the synth. One part sounds like it was directly lifted from "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am" and it couldn't fit more perfectly.
And of course "Only Memories" is otherwordly. It sounds like it could have been recorded with Neil during the On The Beach sessions. Possibly the most epically chill tune MMJ has ever laid to tape.
This album completely justifies the six times I plan on seeing MMJ this summer.

Those high notes Jim hits in Believe are goosebump enduring. Someone who went to that sonos listening party described tropics as sounding like Bon Jovi's dead or alive and now I get what he was talking about. I really enjoy this album after one listen, a lot of otherworldly sounds.

I've only listened twice, so I'm sure my opinions will change quite a bit, but as of now I find the second half of the album to be much stronger than the first half. Only Memories > Tropics is really great stuff. So much potential for these tracks live.
I'm not a fan of Believe at all. I thought it sounded pretty corny actually

I really enjoy the album, but I agree Believe is the weakest track. Is it just me or does Jim kinda sound like Weird Al in that song?
