Can you explain this? Cause I really don't follow or see why there would be any difference.
There is a certain percentage of people that would be excited for either of them, would see them even though they don't know them, and those that would skip them. Skrillex has a similar number of people that would be excited to see them as MMJ, so they would have similar numbers of people at an oppossed which set, but Skrillex has a much higher number of people that would skip him than MMJ I would imagine hence more people at an unopposed What set for MMJ
How can you possibly know that "Skrillex has a much higher number of people that would skip him" as opposed to people who would skip an MMJ set? On what basis are you making such a claim?

Well according to the Gallup poll conducted last month...

I kinda get what he is saying. He is saying that a decent portion of the Bonnaroo crowd, wont sit at all through 2 hours of womps at an unopposed skrillex set, because they don't like EDM and that type of sound. But MMJ, being a more traditional band will get more people to attend an unopposed set.
I don't know how true this statement would actually be, because it seems like the crowds are getting younger by the year, and the womp lovers are gonna be the majority pretty soon.

Somehow I feel like Skrillex has a much higher name recognition among festival goers than MMJ.
Is this a bad time to point out MMJ headlined Lolla in 2011?
I have also saved you the time and included the major rebuttals. 1. Yes, Lolla has 6 headliners 2. They are not unopposed headliners 3. They played the smaller field and Eminem was the big draw.
The end.
Your forgot:
4. Phoenix also headlined and this year they were 85 on the Bonnaroo lineup.

Just give me a My Morning Jacket 2 hour pre-headliner set where they stay onstage and play as the backing band for a Neil Young headliner set. Is that too much to ask?

I missed MMJ for third row at Primus in 2011. Wouldn't trade it, but there hasn't been an MMJ show at Bonnaroo for me since 2008. So...I'd be cool with them headlining and I legitimately think they could. Unless their next album absolutely tanks, I think they will within two years...probably Sunday.
If we're going based on other festivals, MMJ can easily be third on the line up next year. Jack White is headlining Forecastle, therefore MMJ can headline Bonnaroo since they headlined Forecastle in 2012. The only objection is MMJ's home field advantage with Louisville.
The only reason I don't think Jacket's headlining is because Bonnaroo knows how to fuck up the line up and schedule. It doesn't feel like a sure thing they'll be in the top three, or have a headlining spot if they're in the top four.
If Jacket comes back, it's either headlining or late night. The fans deserve more than another pre-headlining set.

Yea, he has more memes and is the butt of a lot more jokes. I bet people would show up just hoping to see him cook something.

I agree. Thats why I dont know if Bacon's statement is completely accurate.
But for example, I may know who Skrillex is and what music he plays, because he is more mainstream, but I would definitely skip his headlining set, because I don't like that music. I really didnt know anything about WSP (other than they were a jam band) in 2011, but I still showed up. I dont speak for a majority of Bonnaroo, but I do feel that small portion of people share this logic.

I recognize Skrillex's name, but that doesn't mean I would see him.

I think your second paragraph is dead on, except it's already happened. The most packed stages at any festival I've attended in the past few years are almost always those with an electronic act playing.
So the idea that "well, more people are likely to skip an EDM show than an MMJ show" is not only completely speculative and unfounded, it's also antithetical to what's actually been demonstrated. If anything, I'd say you can infer the exact opposite of what is being claimed. Electronic artists like Skrillex pack massive shows and festival sets pretty much everywhere, whereas MMJ was opening for Wilco and Bob Dylan in half-empty sheds last summer.

The fact remains that at this point in time there is one EDM act that could headline

Same with ACL, which they headlined in 2011
I guess C3 follows the same format for both festivals (the whole top 6 are headliners). MMJ were technically #5 that year.

First off, its a shame that Wilco and MMJ were playing half empty amphitheaters, I had a college bud send me some pictures from a show in Florida. I was upset at how many empty seats there were.
But you think that all the young kids would just stay back at camp and not see MMJ if they were in a headlining role and played unopposed?

Ya a lot of MMJ and Wilco fans avoided those shows because they didnt care to pay those prices for shortened sets in the day light. I went to two shows on that tour and other than the songs with guests the MMJ and Wilco sets were not very exciting.
