Thought this was a fascinating look by the NYT at Barca's finances. Messi's contract is discussed (as it was recently leaked), as well as the upcoming election. I thought one interesting thing was the mention of a 5 million euro annual payment to Atleti giving Barca right of first refusal to Atleti players Jeremy Fragrance

Great start to UCL knockouts, from Mbappe and Haaland to Porto bossing Juve in the first leg. Man City seem to be the betting favorite right now, barely above Bayern. City are pretty unstoppable right now. I felt pretty good about Everton's performance in a 3-1 loss today to city. Merseyside Derby this weekend.
LIVERPOOL IS BLUE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE OCTOBER 2010!
If you get points from your game in hand you'll be above them in the league
Just as importantly, would be level with Chelsea on points in 4th. Game in hand is against Villa (which is important in my thinking because midweek we had two games in hand, the other of which was City - with City's form now, probably got even more screwed having the first match postponed). Really hate it but need Spurs to get 3 vs. Hammers tomorrow morning. I will be up for that because of the damn dog.
The three home matches in 2021 that were dreadful - 1-0 loss to West Ham, 2-0 to Newcastle, 2-0 to Fulham - really are just going to stick in the craw of all Evertonians for the rest of the season. To have 4 or 5 more points right now and be alone in 4th would be massive. Everton that, playing with intensity against the Big Six and languishing against the bottom of the table (West Ham excepted but still). Finishing top 6/7 is even more important now that City visit Goodison again in March for the FA Cup quarterfinals.

What a Madrid Derby today. I’m pissed we couldn’t get that second goal after having an amazing first half and a lot of good chances in the second, but we kept that gap between us, Barca, and Real. Trippier being back made such a huge difference immediately, and the Suarez goal shows for that. Also an incredible play from Llorente and incredible finish from Suarez. streamvi.com/watch/1615131068

Where did you watch it live? How, I mean? I don't get BeIN, isn't it on that?

We have a subscription to Fanatiz which is a few bucks a month just for la liga.

Pretty huge Clasico today. Neither Barca or Real are in first, and both are in ridiculous form (especially Barca), so any points lost for Real could be the end of their title run. This season gets even more interesting if Real win.

What a great, great finish. Real are going to win the league. I don't buy that Messi will leave though.

Yeah I have absolutely no confidence in Atleti winning the league at this point, and we still have to play Barca in May. It started so well ughhh

OMG this lineup today from EFC is ridiculous, especially for a club ostensibly fighting for Europe. Out today - DCL, Allan, Doucoure, Delph, Gbamin (hurt again!), Pickford...the bench today is full of 17 year olds.

Fun match so far between Everton and Tottenham. Everton scored a real cracker for the second goal, and have had two Michael Keane defensive howlers to give 'arry Kane two chances he shouldn't miss and didn't.
Fighting for Europe with like 4 academy kids on the bench. Just ridiculous.

I feel you there on the second part, we've had some stretches this season where we've had 3 or 4 first team players on the bench and we're trying to finish out a title run against stampeding Barca and Real. Now that most of our players back the atmosphere is still similar to that period where we had a ton of players out and it feels unlikely that we can get this title after being in first for about 20 matchdays, at one point about 12 points above second.

All the Super League news is terrifying to me. Part of what makes the European format special to me is how it's not like every American league, and it's just a straight middle finger to domestic competitions and every other team. Total money grab. What terrifies me is that I can see that this is probably going to be very successful and make every other league unimportant. Here's the full statement if anyone hasn't seen it:

If this was to replace the current Champions League format, maybe... but I still don't like the fact that the same 12-15 teams will automatically be in it. It screws over smaller market teams, that sometimes pop up in the Champions League (such as Leicester.)
Yeah these 12 teams have massive global followings and make top bucks for their respective domestic leagues - but ugh, this reeks of a money grab.

I mean you're an Atleti fan, when was the last time that one of the Spanish big 3 missed the CL, 10 years ago? There's no real relegation for the clubs that have the money, except in the PL. PL is getting boned

This will make the La Liga teams even more uneven if it goes ESL's way. Bit of a different story for EPL since Prem teams have more money in general

supposedly the super league is going to have a salary cap. My larger point is I think it's understated how bad the status quo is right now. Bayern always wins the league in Germany and PSG in France. Juventus has won the last 8 serie A titles. Only three teams have a shot in Spain. I really don't think this new league will make the lack of parity worse than it is right now

even if you don’t take into account any effects it has on the leagues. Why would we want basically a version of champions league without Cinderella story teams? Arsenal is dog shit why are they auto in this?

The appeal is clearly swapping the CL Group Stage of Monaco Ludogoretz for 18 matches between teams in this league every year. The CL Quarters and on will be essentially unchanged

how would they be unchanged there’s teams not included in this that have been in the quarterfinals literally every year.

Bayern and Dortmund are reportedly joining. The only one out is PSG. If the only team out is the Qatari ownership who is using slaves to build the World Cup stadiums, that's fine with me

psg isn’t even winning their league. There’s like hundreds of teams that are not a part of this. Seems crazy to support it whether PSG is built on slave labor or not.
