I'd agree it really only makes sense for MMJ with their schedule. Wednesday night show in NY, travel & rehearse with Roger Thursday and perform Friday before the quick trip to NJ for Saturdays show. Only 1 other 2 day gap between shows for the rest of the tour besides this one.
NFF also confirmed responding to someone on Facebook that the acts won't be announced prior to taking the stage.

Huge MMJ fan here that thought the speculation that they would back Roger Waters was far-fetched. I mean we are the group that thought Basement Tapes could happen and here we are less than two weeks from the fest and not one of the five acts from the project are announced as appearing haha. With all that said, since the schedule has come out I can't get it out of my head that it's MMJ. Whoever the act is, they are getting the same stage time as Roger (it's also worth noting Roger himself as Friday's headliner is getting less time than the Decembrists or '65 Revisited).

A thought that just popped in my head: wonder if the unannounced Saturday set is Colin Meloy solo. I doubt they would give a totally separate artist the shortest set of the weekend, but if it's someone who's playing elsewhere that day already and likes to play solo, sure. And no one makes more sense than Colin. A fun little surprise teaser before the full band set later.

I'd buy that a little more if it wasn't on the main stage. While he'd be the one artist who Newport would give two main stage sets on the same day, I don't really see it happening.
Excuse me, but I believe I was the first to suggest this possibility!
Read page 49, I am the true Jacket suggester. I can't believe this may very well actually happen.
My post was before that, but it only suggested they'd collaborate. Yours was the first to propose them serving as his backing band. It's all great either way!

That Tallest Man/Strand of Oaks/Iron and Wine & Ben Bidwell conflict is the worst.
Yeah it's the toughest one for me to decide on but I think I'll go with Iron & Wine and Ben because I probably won't get another chance to see that show.
Friday: might check out some of the Converse Rubber Tracks > Joe Pug > Angel Olsen > The Lone Bellow > maybe beginning of Strand of Oaks > Iron & Wine and Ben Bridwell > maybe part of Tallest Man > Unannounced > Roger Waters
Saturday: Spirit Family Reunion or For Pete's Sake > Traveller > Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn or Langhorne Slim > beginning of Nikki Lane > Courtney Barnett > Unannounced > Sufjan Stevens > The Decemberists
Sunday: The Ballroom Thieves > Jon Batiste & Stay Human > Lord Huron > first half of First Aid Kit > second half of Blake Mills > Hozier > '65 Revisited

My envy of you all is starting to creep in. This and Psych Fest are the only fests that I look at the lineup every year and like pretty much every artist. I always say to myself, "they won't top this lineup next year. I've missed my chance." Then the next year they match or come close to the previous year. One day I'm gonna make it up to Rhode Island and experience this thing.

And one day I'm going to make it down to Austin to experience Psych Fest (err...Levitation?).
Totally agree that both fests consistently dominate their niche's

A rapper lol, that scares me lol
As someone suggested earlier, it would be a good way for them to introduce some sort of hip hop to the Fort

Yeah but it just seems weird to me. Doesn't feel right. Also, why do you need hip hop? It's not even popular anymore, definitely not what it used to be
