Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Hopefully they have a lot more of these coming, not too many of my personal favorite shows up yet. Last year it looks like they did a dozen or so. Still wish those TuneIn broadcasts were archived, they did a lot...

Found a recording of the Brian Fallon set. Sounds like it might have been ripped from the stream. It was one of the more memorable sets of the weekend for me. Was a little bummed he didn't play any Gaslight Anthem songs, but no artist that I saw seemed more grateful to be there. He talked about how it had been a dream for years, seeming pretty nervous and excited, and had worked up this entire set just for the occasion.

Ok sorry one more. Really in-depth interview with Bo from MMJ about how Roger/MMJ came together. This chunk in particular:
JA: How did the Newport set come together?
BK: I’m not sure exactly, but I think Roger was originally just going to do it acoustic. Then the parties involved found out that we were going to be a surprise guest this year. I think everyone made the connection and proposed the idea that we do something together again. I definitely know that Jay Sweet, the organizer of Newport, deserves some major credit for some of the major string-pulling on that one. Luckily, Roger went for it. To say we were over the moon about the possibility would be an understatement.
JA: Did he send you songs to learn? When did you know what the set would be and how long did you have to prepare?
BK: Jim and Roger had been emailing back and forth for a couple of months, discussing what songs to do. I think Roger had an idea about what core songs he wanted to do, then he and Jim batted some ideas around for covers. For example, both Jim and Roger have a love for John Prine, so the choice of doing “Hello In There” was great, and ended up being one of the more powerful moments, I think. Roger also sent us a demo of him at the piano playing one his new songs called “Crystal Clear Brooks.” When we all heard it, we were blown away. It was truly an honor for the band to be a part of that song being played live for the first time. A week or so before Newport, we got an email from Roger about doing “Brain Damage/Eclipse” and there was a bit of euphoric freak-out over about that, as you can imagine. As I stood on the side of the stage watching Roger play the piano live for the first time in his career (“Crystal Clear Brooks”), I couldn’t help but get overwhelmed by emotion. The tears were welling up big time.

This makes me think even more that we might have had a little to do with making this happen. I'll just keep on believing that was the case, whether it's true or not

I need that Hiss Golden Messenger set from the Blues Cafe! I keep trying to tell people how amazing it was, but there's no words to describe it. I feel like I saw Bigfoot and nobody believes me.
Hey jmurph- I did not see HGM at Newport, but the exact same thing happened to me when I saw them recently n NYC. I told a friend that it was the first time a sax solo was the highlight of a concert for me. It blew my mind to the point I did some research and found the guy's name was Michael Lewis.
I can't say for sure its the same dude because I know HGM has a lot of turnover in the supporting cast, but given your description I would bet it is.
The one time the sax solo was a highlight of a concert for me was at an M83 show. They did the same thing on Fallon, where this dude just comes out of nowhere and destroys. I'm all for more sax solos and glad they seem to be having a (minor) resurgence.
