^ that's a joke, right? a funny joke?
I saw them on Palladia once. I only watched to the end because it was so bad, I was hoping they'd play All Star or something and it would be good. But then they did, and it wasn't. It was not good. It was terrible.
They played on the boardwalk near me with Sugar Ray and Everclear last summer for $10.. Do you really think he was being serious?
I recommend any young traveler looking for shenanigans to stay at the IHSP hostel on Damen. There's a rooftop party every night thursday-Sunday. The Thursday night party was the best I've ever been to. There's also awesome authentic eats, from tacos to hit dogs to wings to pizza, all for a pretty cheap price (I ate massive tacos and hot dogs for dinner every night. 2/$5), as well as tons of shit to do all within less than a mile. There's four bars within view of the rooftop, two nightclubs, and the double-door, which is a venue guaranteed to have after shows every night.
Book early though. Prices get jacked up to about 150/night (from 30/night) around January.
Ok, I'm going to sound a bit like an idiot now but......how does it work staying in a hostel? I've traveled a lot but never stayed in a hostel. Is it awkward going back after a late night of shows to a room with other people? I imagine most people will be there for Lolla. I'm definitely thinking of trying to make this work as I have never been to Chicago other than layovers and may not have the kids that weekend.

I went to pitchfork once. Great venue but the lineups they pull aren't good enough to travel all the way from NJ
E: actually, last year was pretty solid
If your not feeling Pitchfork's lineup I'd still recommend a trip to Lolla. The ticket prices are reasonable, there are great after shows, and they do a great job scheduling so even when you have a super thin lineup like this year's you can still have a decent time.

Its not awkward at all. Mostly everyone will be there for Lolla, so everyone will be in the same boat as you, walking in drunkenly in the wee hours. Just don't be a dick and walk into the room screaming, knocking shit over and whatnot.
Hostels are definitely the way to do a city festival for the physically capable.
Going to be wicked excited when the top 6 is: AC/DC - Kanye West - The Black Keys The Strokes - Robert Plant - Deadmau5
Robert Plant will be done touring after June I believe. Black Keys seem likely because they're always available. AC/DC could play but I hope not, with all that turmoil going on that would be a messy booking. Kanye better be there! No idea on The Strokes or Deadmau5.
Kendrick Lamar/ Death Cab for Cutie/The Decemberists/Weezer/TV on the Radio/Modest Mouse/Passion Pit/Alt- J/Tame Impala/Empire of the Sun/Bastille/Sam Smith Walk the Moon/Tune-Yards/Alabama Shakes/Death From Above 1979 Porter Robinson/St. Vincent/ James Blake/Cloud Nothings Big Gigantic/Father John Misty Hurray for the Riff Raff/ Griswolds/Sylvan Esso/Priory/Echosmith Glass Animals/Odesza/RL Grime George Ezra/Birdy/Waters/Misterwives

Lolla can't possibly this bad again next year.
Horn speaks the truthyet again
I had a great time last year. I saw a lot of acts (25) for an, as Horn said, reasonable price. The fest sells out fast though, so get on it right away if you plan on going. Grant Park is huge, so if you plan on splitting sets, good luck. That being said, avoid Perry's like the plague. Usually the scheduling isn't bad, but putting Iggy in that hellhole was a bad idea.
Also, go to an aftershow. They are well worth the extra money. I went to Broken Bells at the House of Blues this year and they put on quite a show.
I really do hope they get a better lineup this year. That's not to say 2014's was horribly bad (I still found plenty to enjoy on the lineup), but it could've been a lot better (Lorde at #7? Are you shitting me?).
Thats for the feedback all. Just wasnt sure how the "wandering in at the wee hours tipsy after shows" goes over. Very excited for the aftershows. I am really hoping I can swing this.
agreed with lolla's scheduling - it can make for an awesome time even with a crap lineup. but yeah, getting from stage to stage is a serious hike. I haven't been since 2009, but am still wondering how they haven't implemented festival segways there. if I hadn't already seen 95% of the undercard acts that I liked last year, I would have definitely been there.
also, pitchfork is the shit. the ticket prices are really reasonable, the lineup is awesome, the festival grounds are great, and the people are really cool. my only complaint this year was the lack of wristbands / re-entry into the fest.

Have you been to ACL? Or anyone else? I'm wondering what Grant Park is like size-wise compared to Zilker.

Zilker is nothing, never been to Grant but still, acl is super easy to get around inside

Grant Park is smaller. This might be the Chicagoan who's been to Grant more times than he wants to admit in me talking, but Grant's actually not that bad.
It's the sheer volume of people that can make it tough to get around. But if you know where you're going and can figure out when the rushes are going to be* you'll be fine. If you can do ACL, Lolla should be no problem.
* For example, post-Lorde this year going to the Bud Light stage (the north, smaller main stage) was a madhouse. Good thing I got in there during her set. Pre-Iggy near Perry's and Pre-FTP at the south main stage (which is larger) were also ridiculous.
Do the early lineup releases for Roo et al have any impact on when Lolla releases theirs?
Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe AC/DC will be there. I just really want AC/DC to be there. Their in Europe most summer as most know, wrapping it up in Poland on July 25th.
For the people saying you have a hard time splitting acts because Grant Park is huge, I was able to easily split Jack White/Justice/Childish Gambino in 2012 and Jack White/Justice were at complete opposite sides of the park. It's not really that difficult to split sets if you really want to.
Also, the odd numbered years tend to be better lineups for Lolla so hopefully that holds true this year.

Tell that to the 2008 lineup.
'08 was a definite exception. I'd say '09 and '11 were better than '12. '13 was definitely better than '14. '08 was probably the best lineup since it found it's home in Grant Park.
EDIT: To the post above mine - That lineup was better than '12 IMO.

Have you done ACL as well? If so what's the comparison in venue size? I've done ACL and found getting around to be a breeze honestly.
I have no doubts that you can split headliner sets at Grant Park, i'd just like to know if you've really got to make haste y'know?
