^^ yea, that was the year. I mainly went up for ZPZ, and they delivered bigtime. Waka was a ton of fun, it was even hettier than Allgood that same summer in West Va, although I had a much better time at Allgood because the music was better.
I was also at that Wookiefoot show. Total shitshow. Overheard a story while sitting by myself at that show about this kid losing a backback that night with an elbow of a particular tree/bark deriviative. Yikes.
An elbow? Damn. But you guys know how it is up on the mountain - probably didn't last 24 hours. Heh.
I was really thinking about returning, but the final announcement fell short for me. But, there's still plenty to enjoy.
There was some stuff I wanted like Primus and Papadosio that I thought would have made it better. But the Lotus add for me was the biggest key. I was going anyway but definitely counting on them being added. I have 40 acts on the lineup that I would probably try to see at any fest (some barring conflicts). I've never had that level of stuff I liked in one place not to mention that plenty of the good shit will involve multiple sets. By contrast, 2015 Bonnaroo has 29 acts I want to see. Bonnaroo is much bigger, but I like Waka better. The scene, the venue and lack of people there on an ego trip/bucket list adventure makes it more enjoyable to me.
Got the Rebelution tickets for The Joy tonight. Hopefully that will kick ass.
there are about 20 acts I am interested in without doing any research. Doing some digging now and really enjoying The Delta Saints
I haven't gotten that far. Just going down the list for my 40, I have the first 9 acts, Portugal, Big G, Joe Russo's Almost Dead, Dirty Heads, Lotus, Matisyahu, Gigantic Underground Conspiracy, EOTO, Savoy, Galactic with and without Macy Gray, The Floozies, Ozmatli, Quixotic, Collie Buddz, BoomBox, Dilated Peoples, Moon Taxi, Rustie, Minnesota, Hermitude, Gaslamp Killer, Conspirator, MarchFourth!, Chali 2Na, Antiserum, Particle, Dopapod, Twiddle, Black Tiger Sex Machine, Wick-it, Kopecky, Russ Liquid, Janover & reSUNator, ProbCause, Lindsay Lowend, Gladkill, Nth Power, Cure for the Common, Yojimbo, Tauk, Gravity A & The Fritz. Damn, that's like 53. I guess I can't count. Plus I still have to do a bunch of research (e.g. Delta Saints). Also, since you and cmack hadn't gone yet, at least 10 of the acts will have 2 or 3 sets so you can work around conflicts a little or see people you want to see doing different sets often on different stages.
There is a lot here to check out but plenty I already want to see or have seen and want to see again.
Bands I've seen that kill it: The Roots STS9 Slightly Stoopid Big Gigantic Lotus Ozo Old 97s Chali 2 Na (when he was w J5) Young the Giant
New Bands I want to checkout: Thievery Corporation Umphrey's McGee P the Man Matisyahu Thomas Jack Devil Makes Three Quixotic Glass Animals Dilated Peoples Moon Taxi Goldfish The Revivalists Jamestown Revival Conspirator
Bands Id pass on: Well....Ben Kweller is too mellow and have no idea what to expect from Major Lazer
Major Lazer is kind of out there. It's Diplo, Jillionaire and a couple of other DJ's and sometimes musicians whose individual works are generally fine with me. But Major is some kind of Jamaican super hero persona thing they did. It's okay in parts. I'm just thinking the show aspect of this on the main stage at waka will be the draw for that show. But Waka will have something in opposition. If you have never listened to them, think typical electronica tinged with extra Dub and Reggae if that makes sense. But you guys apparently listen to similar stuff as I meaning across the board. You might want to also check out Galactic if you've never seen them. They're pretty much the top band out of NOLA. Gigantic Underground Conspiracy is a supergroup of Big Gigantic, Conspirator/Disco Biscuits and Underground Orchestra. Limited research I've done found they have done this collaboration twice, both on New Year's Day 11 and 12. So I'm pretty jacked about that. Gravity A, also out of NOLA, is a pretty kicking livetronica/funktronica band. They are kind of the local kings of very late night party music. They usually have a few free songs on their website.

The act that I am without a doubt most excited for on this line up is Quantic. He's listed closer to the bottom than he is to the top, but he's some one I've been listening to for almost a decade and have continuously missed over the years when he comes to Atlanta. Such a good producer and now, live band. This guy mixes so many styles. Super under appreciated.
Yeah, that could be a good show. Gotta throw the rep out to Rebelution for a kick ass show tonight at The Joy. Khris Royal played the entire set proving again that he is the Millennial Generation's sax prodigy. #504. While nothing spectacular, it was worth seeing. We ran into Foo, Drew Mees and Danny Abel of Gravity A. They hooked us up with some tix for their show at Tips next Friday with Sonic Bloom which is apparently an Eric Bloom side project. #preliminarywakanight

glad you mentioned him a couple of pages ago...i had never heard of him, now i have his 'best of' on the way.
This will most likely be it other than some fall-outs and adds as life events of bands/acts get in the way of plans. I'm far more excited about Waka's lineup than the other 4 fests I'm going to early in the year (Buku, Jazzfest and particularly Bonnaroo and Hangout though there are things I want to see at both). The top half is heavy in shit I want to see. The way Waka works is if you get VIP or if you get early admission, they have a Wednesday night small show with 2 or 3 acts. Last year, Mouth, Twiddle and Manic Focus all played from like 7pm-12am. Thursday starts the actual fest, so you get a full day of Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And some of the electronic stuff (Satellite Stage) goes on until 6am. Some of the tents go on until about 4ish, and then the main stage goes until 1 or 2 on a couple of nights.
What you will get down the road is mutiple set bands. They usually pick out about 10-15 acts that get mutiple sets. You can pretty much bank on Umphrey's, STS9, The Floozies, etc. getting extra sets. Last year (from memory), it was String Cheese, STS9, Umphrey's, Floozies, Manic Focus, Twiddle (played 3 sets), Magic Beans, etc. What you will also get, and this is unannounced even at the fest, is this overnight hippie/jam bus where different musicians will play 2am-6am sets or mini-superjams with other bands. But they really don't tell you about those. You just gotta kinda wander by that area, and if it sounds good (or if you recognize musicians), you can bank on it being someone pretty high up the list or from a band pretty high up the list.
You answered a few more of my next questions, props for all that! I am getting closer and closer to going and should know in about 4-5 weeks for sure. I been digging around the lineup and found a lot of stuff i like in the lower half that i wasnt familiar with like Andy Frasco, the Fritz, Delta Saints, Hearts of Darkness, and some decent electronic stuff i could enjoy seeing live.
We caught The Fritz at Bear Creek at the Forest Stage, and it was a solid jam/funk style set. You will never be disappointed with Waka (outside of the elements and things beyond your control). Again, if you guys can swing VIP, it's completely worth it if you drink beer as you're getting 4 1/4 days of music up to 18 hours a day, a couple of meals each day, prime viewing for the best shit, free beer and cider/ale at the 3 VIP bars (including 1 in the VIP campground and the other 2 at the two main stage VIP bars (Main Stage/Revival Tent). Do a Google search for "The Satellite Stage" as that's the EDM side of things. You'll get a couple of acts in the tents and the main stage, but they do most of the DJ sets at that stage. It's basically kind of a natural ampetheatre down on the back side of the mountain.
Before they take it down, check out the stage schedule from 2014 which should answer a bunch of questions about what they're doing. We never went to Riverside stage at all, but I think that's heavy on the bluegrass stuff.
Yeah, you get different time slots and different stages in some cases (like SCI playing their 2 hour set at the Revival Tent midnight and the next day a 3 and a half hour set at the main stage). Some DJs and electronica (e.g. Break Science) also repeat, so I didn't mean to ignore that aspect. I'm biased after having a blowout time last year and coming away feeling like it was the best festival expierience I've had. I haven't done everything by a long shot, but I've probably been to 9 or 10 different fests/venues, and this was new Top 1 festival experience and why everyone in my family decided to go back and do VIP again. I'll finally be able to properly evaluate whether I really like Waka more than Bonnaroo as much as I think I do, since we're doing back to back VIP this year. We'll see how they stack up at a 1:1 level for 2015 (though again, I'm far more interested in the Waka lineup top to bottom than Bonnaroo, so I might already be biased going in).
do you have a suggestion on where to camp. A friend of mine said the main event camping is overrated and it is better to camp at an outside or satellite site?

Unfortunately not. VIP has it's own campground behind the main stage. There is a ton of room there and you can post up wherever you want to. I heard Riverside is sort of offsite and may have Leo issues. And it's also kind of a hike, but they have a stage over there. Main campground is pretty much like every other camp by your car down a row camping festival. But it's sort of shaped like a bowl, so if you get a super rainy day or whatever, the low spots can pool. It's relatively flat but is sort of bowl shaped on a light slope so some of the fringes offer slightly higher ground. It's not 'bad' and it's nothing like getting stuck on the fringes of bonnaroo's ga campground, but I like being able to have a little more room and put up a canopy or whatever to hang at. VIP gives you enough room to do it however you want to.
Followed your lead and went through some of the lower acts yesterday by watching some YouTube live stuff. I really liked Greenhouse Lounge who is kind of a drum and bass jamtronica band (3 piece). They reminded me sort of as a cross between Conspirator (who is high on my list) and Zoogma. I knew and have seen Gravity A (going see them tonight) The Fritz and Mouth. I also liked Hearts of Darkness which you mentioned. There is a lot of percussion with those guys. I thought The Mantras sounded good. I really like Ghost Owl. And for electronic, Archnemisis was decent and certainly Krooked Drivers looks fun. Above that level is midcard. I'm up to the point where I've got more shit I want to see at Waka than Bonnaroo, Hangout and Buku combined. I know my tastes run a little more hippie/livetronica than most people, but the depth isn't just filler DJ's, filler Indie bands or filler old shit even old mfs like me don't want to see (eg Tears for Fears). Gladkill also sounds pretty good. Looks like he passed over the chillwave movement straight to 2001 A Space Odyssey space-influenced DJ stuff. That's got to be a 3 or 4am show.
Oh and I also agree with you on The Delta Saints. I'm always happy to see blues inspired rock and roll. There really isn't enough of that to go around anymore.
Nice. I'll see you mfs there. I thought Lotus (and whiskey) was great Wednesday: when did y'all see em and what did you think about the show? This was my 2nd time seeing them and hoping Waka gives them 2 sets.
By far one of my favorite acts. I saw then at Stubbs in ATX for the 2nd time. Unfortunately, Ne215 was in Philly but he'll get to know em in a few monthS. Two sets would be great and Id love to experience one of their "themed" shows.
Wanted 2 Lotus sets, but STS9, UM, Galactic (with and without Macy Gray), Ozomatli, Twiddle, Magic Beans, Tauk, Mouth and possibly Cure for the Common will be good double sets. I'm guessing STS9 and UM will each do a headliner set on the main stage and pre-headliner or midnight (post-headliner) set. One is probably Thursday/Friday and the other Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday.
Hate to harsh the mellow of the positive tribe, but damn I thought lotus was a shoe in for 2 sets this year. The rest looks good, can't go wrong double dipping into some tribe and umph again and I love me some nahko bear.
Anyone else notice at the bottom of the full lineup poster it says "and many more?"

Last year they both did a late night show and headliner show! Love those late late waka nights

I'm thinking those will be the winner(s) of the Waka Winter Classic and a couple one-off adds. Else they forgot to take it off. I watched some Savoy shows this weekend, and they were pretty good in the Conspirator vein. Waka is super packed in the mid-card this year.

just 1 Galactic set but 2 with Macy
The website lineup shows it the other way around (1 Galactic Set, 1 Galactic w/ Macy Gray set). www.wakarusa.com/artist-lineup/
The poster says "1 set Galactic Only" so I'm reading that the way Waka has their lineup out (e.g. 1 set with Macy Gray, 1 set of just Galactic)
