We quickly discussed this in the mock schedule thread. What I think they SHOULD do this year, especially if they do New Basement Tapes, they should give the Superjam the Arctic Monkeys slot on Sunday because those tunes are much more fitting for an afternoon in the What Field than they are for a LN dance party.
I agree and would personally attend a lot more Superjams if they were in the afternoon. I think they fit the spirit more. It would especially be nice have video screens for the Superjams, so you can see all of the special guests on stage.
With them already having the first EDM act HL the what stage this year, maybe they're feeling crazy enough to have the first What stage a Superjam as well, I sure hope so because New Basement Tapes would be an AMAZING late afternoon show

Agreed. Would've loved to attend the superjam last year that coincided with Frank Ocean's set, but I went for the latter instead. I don't regret that decision, but I wish Superjams weren't LN
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

Eh, SOME superjams should be in the afternoon, that one should certainly be a LN, it was a Skrillex superjam, it had to be a LN
Besides the Bonnaroo tradition of it, I really do not see why the Superjams are a latenight thing.
I assume that because there are so many moving parts and things go unexpected they need more freedom to stretch the set out if necessary. I want to say that for the Soul Superjam it was mentioned that they weren't even totally sure they'd be able to do the Billy Idol/R. Kelly guest spots until the last minute. I believe it's easier to give a Superjam a late night tent slot to stretch out if needed. During the day could cause more problems/conflicts.
I like having Superjams as late nights but I definitely agree that they cause a major conflict with other late nights.

I know there had been at least one afternoon Super Jam because I was there. It was the Dr John and Dan Auerbach Super Jam on Sunday afternoon a few years ago at the That Tent.
Besides the Bonnaroo tradition of it, I really do not see why the Superjams are a latenight thing.
Most of the LN sets are big spots and the superjam is a big deal.
It has more to do with the personnel of the Superjam... They are bringing together a lot of big musicians and it really wouldn't make sense to schedule it elsewhere.
They tell us "Rock'n'roll is the devil's music." Well, let's say we know that rock is the devil's music, and we know that it is, for sure … At least he fuckin' jams! If it's a choice between eternal Hell and good tunes, and eternal Heaven and New Kids on the fuckin' Block … I'm gonna be surfin' on the lake of fire, rockin' out.

I can tell you have not listened to his stuff then he is pretty damn Psychedelic.
There's a gateway in our mind that leads somewhere out there beyond this plane
Where reptile aliens made of light cut you open and pull out all your pain
Tell me how you make illegal something that we all make in our brain
Some say you might go crazy but then again it might make you go sane
Every time I take a look inside inside that old and fabled book
I'm blinded and reminded of the pain caused by some old man in the sky
Marijuana, LSD, psilocybin, and DMT they all changed the way I see
But love's the only thing that ever saved my life
Turtles All the Way Down- Sturgill Simpson.
Not to dicker too much since everyone is entitled to their own opinion about what music is in what genre, but I would say while his lyrics and song title may give the appearance of psychedelic, I find that song and the whole album to be straight up solid country, not psychedelic at all. I love his music, just don't see him as a late night psychedelic guy.

There is a big tradition of Psychedelic Country quite honestly, pretty much anything Graham Parsons played on especially the Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Leftover Salmon etc.... For that matter Beck at least half the does Psychedelic Country. He flat out says he launched his solo career because of all the Psychedelics he had been taking, and his live show reflects those influences as well. Regardless of all that his show deserves a LN spot for sure it is pretty amazing.

Yeah, aware of all that - been following the psych country folks for many years. Just my opinion on Sturgill Simpson's current album vis a vis late night.

Fair enough, though like I said it would be criminal not to give it to him. His popularity is off the map right now, his 20$ tickets for the Nashville show are going for around 350+ per pair on craigslist and stubhub.

I can tell you have not looked at the list of confirmed acts for the bluegrass situation stage on Sunday because he is pretty damn locked in for Sunday. And aside from the fact that we already know which day he is playing, I agree with Pops. That new album just sounds like country, lyrics aren't what makes music psychedelic so that was pointless.

Agreed completely.
The question of what is psychedelic is a strange one for me. It's a fluid genre that refuses to be pinned down. It means different things to different people.
For me though, more then lyrics are needed for me to consider something psychedelic. I do think psychedelic lyrics can invoke memories or imagery in someone that would fall into the psychedelic category. But I think this is more indicative of the person then the music.
I only listened to the new Sturgill Simpson once, but all I heard was straight up country with some interesting lyrics. But I don't listen to country, so could easily be missing the nuances in it.
If he's a late night, at least I know that's one conflict I won't have to worry with. My biggest fear is MMJ, Slayer, and Atomic Bomb having overlapping late night sets. I would destroy things...many, many things.

Really? So Ween was not doing psychedelic rock? What about Beck? I mean look at his video....

The VIDEO was psychedelic, the song was not except for a thirty second clip of the song where he used a bunch of reverb to make it sound trippy. Otherwise, that is just country music, given it's probably the only new country music that I like, it's still just country music. Literally, everyone but you that has weighed in on the topic agrees that it's not psychedelic. I don't care anyway, all I was saying in the first place was that they are already confirmed to be in the Bluegrass Situation tent on Sunday. So you can stop hoping for "psychedelic" country LN and shift your hopes for LN elsewhere (I'm focusing all my efforts on King Gizz)

He thinks he is psychedelic country, I have seen the show and agree I guess we should just leave it at that, because everyone has like opinions man....

I mean saying that twanging guitars and country music is not psychedelic just does not compute to me. I remember dropping out of high school to follow these guys around for instance and it was a very psychedelic time.

If you take enough drugs, I imagine any song could sound "psychedelic."
true story. what follows is the most psychedelic song i've ever heard in my life:
better get your game face on.
it was a special night many many many years ago when i was introduced to this song.
Hahahaha, thank you for that. I'm actually not surprised because his voice sounds like it's half auto-tuned so I'm sure it sounded reallll weird to ya that night. My most psychedelic song I've ever heard was actually at Hangout during the Flaming Lips last year when they played The W.A.N.D. I somehow forgot it was even performed by them and I love that song, so... given the ummm... circumstances of that night, it was just a wild, surreal, breathtaking experience

Pink Floyd on the Division Bell tour probably wins for me.

That's not even fair. I would do many terrible, unforgivable things for the opportunity to see Pink Floyd back in their prime

Well it was not their "prime" by any means but it was a great show, it was in Vanderbilts outdoor football stadium and they did some crazy shit. I have around 50 pre 95 Grateful Dead Shows, over 150 Phish shows, and have made it into all kinds of crazy stuff but that Floyd show, and the last LCD Soundsystem show at MSG are probably the two best things I have ever seen. These days I just do stuff at the Ryman and local bars single dadding and looking at 40 aint easy or cheap.

For sure, I'm still waiting for a modern group to rise to challenge and compare to those legends. The acts I'm really looking forward to most in terms of future show potential is the idea of some of the albums that are nearing their 20th or 25th anniversaries (so many great albums came out in the latter half of the 90's)

Who are you thinking of specifically? That half decade for me was either spent on tour in a bit of a haze or then very abruptly caring for small children and sometimes both, but I consider that a wasteland for good new stuff. A lot of acts like Phish, DMB, and Panic peaked then but they all started a lot earlier.
