Last time I was promised a beard and there wasn't one. I'm still a little salty about it.
I had a beard, it wasn't a substantial beard but it was a beard no less.
If you go I promise the beard will have much more volume, maybe even a few critters living freely within. Plus, Karen said she'll have one just for you!
Seriously man, you have to go. I don't think i can wait until Roo for a Cleo hug, withdrawls man!

They really are good hugs. They're best in the morning when he's all loving and sleepy eyes. I love you, boo and I won't back down from the beard promise. It's a good costume idea.
so I'm trying really hard to talk myself out of going to this. I've never been and fall in the same lines as Karen. drunk me hasn't bought a ticket yet but I wouldn't put it past him. in a nutshell. how does this festival work compared to roo?

It's a great value. It's kind of like a long line of stages. You walk down the sidewalk along the Mississippi River. Depending on what entrance you take, you'll pass by a tent stage then the other three keep growing in field capacity. It's a nice city fest and you will definitely get your $100 worth. You might want to pack some boots for mud as I hear that's common. The year I went the locals were referring to it as Memphis In The Mud. I'd like to go again and probably would have bought tickets already if the Saturday lineup wasn't sandwiched into the middle of the weekend. Not much there that day for my tastes. Anyhow, you should totally go and try some Memphis BBQ while you're at it.

It's tiny compared to roo.
BUT, you have 3 stages on the river. It's honestly not much walking from stage to stage. Easy to get to the front even last minute like I did last year for pretty lights. Vendors aren't that great on food and beer is your basic budlite selection unless you want to stand in line for 2 hours at the fancy craft beer tent.
It's gameover at 1am (I believe that's the time). Hotels still with vacancy aren't that close to beale street so you would want to drive/park. Parking gets more expensive as you get closer to the entrances. I think we paid $20 a pop for parking last year just so we didn't walk much.
But, beale street is live and active. Memphis itself is just a little scary. West memphis arkansas isn't much better. So just be careful.
The FedEx, Bud Light, and Rockstar stages are all pretty much the same size. There is no main stage, all of these stages have Headliners each night including the Pearl River Blues tent stage. It is just a mix of different genres, each of these acts have a big following. We all have our favorites, best thing about this is it will spread the crowd out. Bad news is there are some conflicts each night for some of us. I thought they did a better job the last couple of years of staggering times so you could see more, like most of this band & some of another or half of this band & all of another. This is more head to head, take your pick.. Most will probably campout at a particular stage for the day, but I have bands each day on all the stages that I like.
Wow, John Fogerty got shafted with the scheduling. He should either be headlining the main stage, or at least pre-headlining the main stage.
Also...

Gotcha. I assumed the Bud Light stage was the de facto main stage since three of the top four acts on the lineup are closing that stage. However, scheduling The Avett Brothers and John Fogerty against each other is a bit of a head-scratcher. I would be livid about that conflict if I were attending.

Yes, I am but most of these are easy for me since I've seen this band & not that one, I'll pick the (1) I haven't seen. Like, Lenny Kravitz on Friday. Seen all (3) of the other headliners & like a lot but have not seen Lenny. Saturday, I've seen Fogerty many times so I'll be watching Avetts again. Sunday is more of a problem for me since I haven't seen any of the (3) Headliners & like all 3, at least that day Wilco is staggered a half hr. from the other (2) so I will see part of (1) show and all of Wilco.

The Blues tent is great, the only place to go & sit in a chair out of the wind ,rain and elements if there are any. Always good bands from start to finish every day with big crowds. This is always the best bang for your buck Festival for me . 81 dollars for 3 days total (early bird tickets)
Wow, only 2 acts I want to see on Saturday (Soul Asylum/Diarrhea Planet) and they're both playing at the same time early in the day. Guess I'll be getting wasted all day Saturday just walking around aimlessly.

Thats my only conflict at all but I can't miss the Avetts, at least not for Fogerty. The only thing worse would be Avetts vs. Wilco.

Flaming Lips vs. Lenny Kravitz
I've heard Flaming Lips are awesome live but don't know a ton from them but from what I've seen it looks fun. Then again, I was born in the mid 90's so Fly Away was on the majority of "Summer CD's" I've ever had. Anybody have opinions on this? Then again I've heard Flaming Lips are at a lot of fests, and Lenny isn't. Haven't seen either of them, which do I see!?
The only one worse for me is... Cage the Elephant vs. Ed Sheeran
While I enjoy stuff from both, I will already be at the Rockstar stage for Rise Against, so seeing Cage the Elephant sounds logical. Plus Ed Sheeran will have that large radio crowd I assume. The thing is Cage the Elephant plays a ton of fests, where I haven't really seen Sheeran other places. Closing out Sunday I feel like Cage the Elephant may have a little more energy than the Sheeran show, but Sheerans got some good stuff. I'm stuck. Kinda surprised the times weren't staggered at least by 10 minutes! Once again, haven't seen either of these two (skipped CTE at Firefly to get closer for Imagine Dragons in 14 :/
I saw Ed Sheeran at Bridgestone Arena a few years ago and I have to say - he is outstanding live. He also does his own thing, too... and makes radio edit his songs to be playable on air. He is a great musician and very underrated.
There are conflicts aplenty for me, but I'm loving Cage the Elephant v. Ed Sheeran. BSMF is always a great time, looking forward to it.
I wanted to see cage the elephant but I'm not sticking around sunday. Gonna do sunday funday in memphis and then head home. I'll catch cage the elephant at sloss fest in july so I'm good.
Friday and Saturday is basically going to a stage and staying there it seems. Schedule doesn't have me hoping back and forth like it did last year. Buddies and I are sitting down this weekend to hash out the deets for this trip. All we know at this point is the hotel is booked lol and my buddy is taking this chick WHO HAS A BOYFRIEND with him and he's going to stick around sunday night (the rest of us are leaving sunday afternoon) to see ED SHEERAN for some chick he isn't even getting to bang. We are all having a good laugh about that. He isn't though.

I'm very interested in coming for just Friday the way that the schedule worked out. I could come to town early enough to eat at Rendezvous and then I could post up at the same stage the whole day and see Lenny Kravitz, Ryan Adams, Jenny Lewis, and Spin Doctors.

I've never been. I have a good friend who won't shut up about how good it is, but every time I come to Memphis I stay with a different friend who says it's over-rated and doesn't want to go there. So I need to eat there so that I can weigh in and tell one of them they're wrong.

I mean, I could see how someone would say it's overrated just bc there are sooo many other good places to eat there.
It's hard to find and looks like a hole in the wall joint but once you walk down the stairs... it's just a cool treat.
It's been around for awhile and is just a memphis staple to me. Once went to memphis for a week and that was the first place everyone wanted to go.
You'll like it. Even if it's not the best bbq youve ever had, it's still fucking amazing. Definitely not the worst bbq you'll ever eat!
