I would not recommend walking in Memphis at night unless you have a hotel close to Beale Street. Memphis is a good place, but it has one of the worst crime rates in the South. It's poorly lit, too, unless your hotel is very close to Beale.
It's also going to be almost impossible to get free parking that weekend. You will likely either have to park in a parking garage (several are available), uber, or find some place you can catch a bus.
I would definitely recommend to book a hotel ASAP - most are already taken in the area. West Arkansas or Southaven would be the best suggestions I would offer for a hotel.
Exactly my thoughts lol memphis in may is more nice than memphis any other month of the year............

I'm staying about 3 miles from tom lee park and I won't waalk it because of about half mile of the trip is not lit and honestly really sketchy. Be careful with uber too. There is a parking garage on union and 3rd i think that is really nice and has security. In the past it's been about $10 and its right near the flying fish!

I'm gonna be on a bro trip with my bro's so no solo walking for this little chick!! But yeah, I would agree. It gets shady really quick.

If you have 2 or more people going, I recommend looking at Homeaway.com or Trip Adviser for 1,2,3 or more bedrooms. This is our 4th year to go and we always get a place walking distance to festival ( about 1/4 - 1/2 mi. ) , and there is always a lot of people doing the same as us. Sooo nice to have your own place to kickback ( W/Kitchen ).
Keep me updated about your hotel. I'd like to be around familiar humans if at all possible. And in my experience Inforoo does a festival better than anyone else.
I'll look this weekend -- we got a few extra people going this year than last so we will need additional rooms. But cool! And I'll cry at avett bros with you.
Also, last year I know I saw Dana, Cleo, Patrick and his wife there... not sure if they will be back this year??
I'll be there again this year, scored a room at the Peabody. I just can't stay away from those cute little ducks!
Hi....my name is Karen. I don't think we've met. But I make poor life choices on the regular.
Thanks for the advice...but there's a good chance I'll find my way into a dark alley or two.
This is why I'm putting myself up for adoption.
If you don't figure something out let me know, there's no way I'm letting you wander the streets of Memphis at night alone. It is pretty sketchy the further away from Beale street you get. Last year while walking to the fest one night we watched this guy get brutally knocked out right in front of us. Luckily LLL put her nursing skills to use and helped the guy out. He was in bad shape.
So I'll adopt you if you don't figure something out.

What some people fail to see is that under my unassuming stature and dreamy eyes....I'm quite terrifying. And I have abaolutely no virtue left to protect.
Jokes aside.....thank you! Resourcefull or not....I always prefer to be in good company.

Actually, memphis is pretty safe during the festival. There are tons of people walking along all the main streets going back to their cars, hotels, etc. I wouldnt suggest getting off on those dark alleys but as long as you stay on the main roads, its pretty safe. We have never had any issues other than bums wanting money or to sell us drugs. If you shoo them away, they usually just leave you alone. We had one last year follow us around for about 30 minutes. We had a group of about 8. Finally, my sister looked at him and said "its time for you to go now!" and he left.

fuck….you're bougie.
I just checked out the rooms there…..I kind of want to stay homeless so that you'll take me in as the most fancy stray on the floor ever.

In my opinion, easily the best bang for your buck right here. You would have a hard time seeing any 2 of these Headliners for this price. Love Beale St. where the party keeps going until 4-5 in the morning. That's why they start later in the day than most festivals.

Soo.... just booked the hotel room. As a group, we are lazy even after making plans to all hang out and check out hotel rooms this weekend --- we didn't.
We are at the ramanda inn at west memphis. I hate west memphis but it was the closet, cheapest hotel with double beds. Also, i've stayed there before and since we plan on cramming a billion people into the room, it's got outside entrances and no lobby. BOOM!

For those staying in West Memphis, do you plan to drive or cab it to the fest? I've never been to the Memphis area and am debating where to book a room. I'm trying to make it down for this, just waiting on work to finalize.

Heh. I knew this and I still walked to my hotel every night last year. I think I was almost 2 miles away. It was very interesting and kind of unnerving. I just put my head down and tried to get back as soon as I could. I wouldn't recommend it though as everyone else has said.
I did have an older lady walk up to me lost one of the days when I was a bit away from Beale. I was so worried for her, she was asking for directions and she walked away from her husband in drunken anger and just wanted to get to her room. I let her use my phone to call her husband and she headed back towards Beale (and more lights!). I watched her walk until I couldn't see her anymore and continued on my way. It can get pretty sketch in Memphis and the fact that she walked up to a big black guy at 1 am in Memphis....she had to be wasted hahaha.
I'm not sure if I'm gonna go again this year. It'll probably be a last minuet decision and with so many Inforooloves close to me I may just cave in. As for now I'm still on the fence.

and my boss told me a few years back never ask for directions in memphis. they stopped (pre-gps days I'm hoping) to ask for directions. The guy led them down the road to his friends who robbed them. They never saw it coming.

Last time I was promised a beard and there wasn't one. I'm still a little salty about it.
