Welp after Mumford f*cked up the week for myself, my bro, and sis by postponing their show Wednesday, Frank Turner made it better. Looks like it's gonna be a bit till I get a chance to see Mumford again, hopefully Hangout next year, but gonna catch Frank at the House Of Blues in October. All thanks to you sweet people on here too. Would have never even given this guy a chance if it wasn't for this thread. Should be a great show.
Right on, Bob, brunch it is. We'll work out the details over the next year. We usually eat around 10, then get a couple of beach hours before going into the fest. Unless there's an early act that everyone's excited about, that'll likely be the plan again. BTW, good on ya for catching the Stones. Also, gotta get a plug in for my guys The Revivalists, played a great set in St Louis last night. I'd like to see them back next year!
Can't remember who I owe the nudge to regards buying a Stones ticket but....YOU ARE FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!. New Best Concert I have ever seen. And Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood plus Joe Walsh smoked the "set up" band action. It was a hot and muggy night in Nashville, but watching those 70 year olds melt the faces of everyone there and playing just about every one of their hits...taking two full hours, amazing. Never seen a band pay so much attention to details and get it right. Listened to the rewind on the radio after the show and the DJ who went to the show was as pumped up as I was. In recovery after driving til 2:30 am to get home. Again, thanks, punched that bucket list item with gusto and ready for Fleetwood Mac next.
Tht is great. Picked up some for the Buffalo show. Four tix in the "cheap seats" for $350. Hopefully can sell a pair and go for half face value. Really excited for it after all the reviews in here.

Brunch is good with me, but gotta say that the "Reach for the Beach" winner that opened the fest on Friday this past year at 11:30 was one of the best surprise acts I caught (and might have missed due to a late sleep in) that I wasn't planning on. Just me, but I'm making that contest winner set a must see for at least a song or two at every Hangout from now until they quit doing it.

Don't know why (yes I do) but these guys never play the deep south (east of NO, south of Atlanta and North of Miami). Hopefully I'll be able to catch them if they ever aim at New Orleans again and if I have a heads up before it sells out.
Fleetwood Mac, I've caught a few times with mixed reactions. First concert (way long ago) was great. Second concert was not just bad, it was one of the worst I've paid for. Both in the same venue so I can't blame it on the acoustics. They just didn't have their stuff together.
quick read....everyone on here that saw JR or YF seemed to like them so maybe they'll grow with the fest....and I don't even remember "firekid" on the lineup?

I know, I know...I was bored. But it'll be interesting to see if any of us actually remember this stuff next May. I, for one, will probably forget it all by next week.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've seen him since at a venue here in town. I was even MORE impressed. The dude is musically gifted, which you saw, but on top of that, he's hilarious. One freakin' great show.

Yea really cool laid back guy I actually got a chance to meet him in the vip section after his set at hangout and got one of his CDs to help support great talent. He was kind enough to sign it for me
didnt see Young Fathers or Jamell but certainly didnt have a bad time.
No Ragrets!
Agreed. Hangout was up there. The same argument could be made that anyone who didn't see Keys n Krates, Dj Grandtheft, Break Science, GRiZ, My Morning Jacket, Beck, Skrillex, Frank Turner, Gramatik, TV on the Radio, Dirty Heads, Jr. Gong, FF, Umphreys, Beats Antique, Jack U, Galactic, Pres Hall and Friends and Adventure Club missed out too. Haha. No regrets at all. As it turns out, Hangout was underrated by the haters. Probably will end up being #2 or #3 best fest for me this year.
So...
Blacking in and out in a strange flat in East London. Somebody I don't really know just gave me something To help settle me down and to stop me from always thinking about you. And you know your life is heading in a questionable direction When you're up for days with strangers and you can't remember anything Except the way you sounded when you told me you didn't know what I should do.
It's a long road up to recovery from here, a long way back to the light. A long road up to recovery from here, a long way to making it right.

The Frank Turner set is my choice for this fest season so far. I took my sons, who had no interest, and they were both wide-eyed. Overall, gotta agree, Hangout took a lot of shit here and elsewhere, but really delivered when it mattered.I guess there's a reason that we have 28 pages of looking forward to 2016 already.
Happy Father's Day dads. I went to Frank Turner with a lot of expectations and left after the third song. First, it was hot as hell. Second, although the performance had tons of energy and excellent sound quality...great beat, I did not like the lyrics/message.
There is no God, So clap your hands together, There is no God, No heaven and no hell. There is no God, We're all in this together, There is no God, So ring that victory bell.
I listen to a performers lyrics and it makes a difference for me. For the folks who like Frank...go for it. If I knew his personal story, may also make a difference. But to get p in front of a lot of impressionable young people and sing "There is no God"...I'm out on that. I thought there were a lot of other performers I enjoyed more. Agree that Hangout is an amazing, fun festival and that is why I have tickets and a condo for next year. Said it once and say it again, there is plenty of room for all sorts of music and people at these festivals. When they tilt to one specific genre, I think they lose something. On the other hand, the CMA fest in Nashville is definitely well run and entertaining for country music fans.
I didn't so much like or agree with that song either, but it's notthing but a humanist expose and plea for people to get off their ass and solve shit rather than blame/attribute situations to a deity. That's a classic English position that is no different from Emerson, Lake and Palmer's early 1970's take on an old 1700s pub song with Jeruselem. I mean yeah, Frank's atheism is more overt, but it just speaks to free will.
And did those feet in ancient time, Walk upon England's mountains green? And was the holy lamb of god On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the countenance divine, Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here Among these dark satanic mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear, oh clouds unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight, Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand Til we have built Jerusalem In England's green and pleasant land
As for impressionable minds, you are wrong. If college age and older (primarily) can't be exposed to different ideas, then we aren't much different from North Korea. I think people can make up their own minds and aren't going to be influenced by a sing along. Because at the end of the day, there are at least as many arguments as to religion being a controlling force rather than a liberating force, and for those who want to break those shackles or at least write lyrics to support breaking it, they have their right to make those arguments. Of course you or I would equally have a right to disagree or walk away. That's America baby.
1 song i dont like or disagree with certainty isnt enough to turn me away from an act i love. i thought it took massive balls for him to play that song and i found some humor in the whole thing personally.

I agree with that. On the one hand, as a born and raised Catholic, it's easy to find offense. But the guts it takes to present that position in South Alabama is definitely steeped in humor. It's like the KKK guy going to the historically black college to talk in their free speech area or equally MLK going into an all-white arena to shake things up.

I'm kinda waffling on this. People tend to generalize religious ferver or ideals when they think about the south, but in reality, the closer you get to the coast, the more liberal the people are. Mobile, being a port city, is even more so than you would think since it has so many international businesses located here. It's more below the "bible belt", so to speak.
On top of that, Hangout draws people in from all over the country, so it's not just a bunch of thumpers the acts are playing to.
Having said that, I think everyone has the right to decide what is tolerable for themselves when it comes to songs that they may find disturbing.
That's fair. I realize Mobile and Pensacola (and the MS Gulf Coast) lean a little more toward New Orleans as islands within the Bible Belt, but for my money, south Baldwin County and particularly Orange Beach (reference the elected mayor's stance on the wsmfp show at the wharf in May) aren't usually bastions of free thought. I know people from Gulf Shores and Orange Beach who refuse to go to Hangout specifically due to the uptight presence of local law enforcement and their values. So my take is that it's a mixed bag. I haven't had a problem down there, but I haven't been involved in a whole lot of political, religious or philosophical discussions with the locals either.

born and raised catholic myself and went to catholic schools all the way through college, granted im a shitty catholic lol but still took no offense for a number of different reasons.
It's all about freedom and choices. I love my freedom and made my choice. Appreciate those who support free choices, I didn't put Frank down, and allow people to express different opinions. Not really a conservative or liberal, believer or non believer issue. All I heard about Frank was wow and given the heat, and that "ballsey" intro song...condo pool sounded like a better option to me. I think I remember a lot of folks on here beating up ZBB for one reason or another and that is cool I guess.
That's all fair. In the end, I took a similar approach to you. He opens up with Recovery and then another song before the there is no God sing along. I needed a drink and had to go find some people at Delong (I think) so I bailed as well. But I'm going to try to catch him at Voodoo knowing that there is a song that I'm not generally going to agree with.

I'm pretty sure the issue with Gulf Shores and OB being conservative has WAY less to do with religion than it does with the fact that so many of the year round residents are retirees. It's an age thing, not a bible thing. We represent the "long-haired hippy freaks" that they used to be in the 60's, and that's the last thing they want lured into the condo next door.
Haha. But that would be hypocritical of them. I am old but damn me if I'm going to expect something different from a later generation when I grew up in the late 70s and early 80s. We picked up that torch from prior generations...

I'll throw in my protestant two cents....i was at Natural Child during this show listening to good 'ol sex and drugs rock n roll. If i had been there i probably would have walked. It would be hard fore me to maintain my mood with that kind of rant. But, i have no problem with him saying whatever...at the same time, i don't think it takes any balls this day and age. I just find it more annoying than shocking. It's like when Wayne goes on a political rant at a Flips show...it just pulls me out of where i want to be. Musically, frank just makes me yearn for the Pogues. Isaac Brock has some pretty strong atheistic lyrics, but i seem to tolerate it from him...typ crit
Catholic born and raised. Catholic school through high school. More spiritual now than religious. I remember my mom telling me stories about her father freaking out when "Imagine" came out because of the opening line of "Imagine there's no heaven". She was literally banned from listening to the song and had to sneak around to find someone who would play it for her. It's kind of the same thing as this to an extent but as some of you said it is a little less "shocking" in today's age. While it doesn't bother me at all I could see how it would some and respect everyone's personal choices. I had a great time at Frank but if you didn't I hope you found something else great to check out (or in Bob's case a sweet condo pool to relax at).
